We generally try to be objective and impartial with Alt Shift X, but this video gets a little salty/snarky/negative in parts. Hopefully that doesn’t take away from the cool bits – really enjoyed talking about Dothraki religion, Arya in the library, Melisandre etc. And it’ll be fascinating to see where the final few episodes go…

I find it so... strange isn't the right word? Awkward? Not even that, really. I don't know. I don't have the right word. But I find it so [word] that you and LML (as well as huge chunks of the fanbase) are so salty over this episode when it's precisely the content that you and LML have educated me with that made me 100% able to just accept and enjoy it as it happens. Sure, it (maybe - last 3 episodes might change it) but invalidates some fan theories, but to me all it does is make us work harder to find different ones that work instead. To think harder and dig deeper. Really interested to watch this video of yours. Here we go.

Wonderful, all of your criticisms are warranted. A really great retrospective on the place of this episode in the show's history.

As always, this was a great review, although I must quibble over calling Melisandre’s pep talk with Arya a retcon. Yes, it placed a lampshade on the “blue eyes” description. But her message to Arya was old information as she reminded our favorite psychopath of her raisin d’etre. What she told Arya at Winterfell was the same as what she told her back in the day. Rearranging words without changing its content or meaning is not a retcon device.

Couldn’t agree more. A lot of people have talked about Jon fulfilling his destiny by negotiating with someone (possibly the NK) and bring people together. The prophecy specifically says that AA will STAND against the darkness. Jon and Dany united the living to fight against the dead. That’s arguably more important than Arya literally striking the killing blow because if it weren’t for the actions of Jon and Dany, Arya never would have had a chance to kill NK.

I really feel like a lot of people are hung up on the fact that Arya didn’t kill NK and are completely disregarding the fact that Jon and Dany united the living to stand against the dead. If they hadn’t done that and humanity wasn’t prepared NK would have won, would have killed Bran, and there would have been another Long Night. Instead, the Long Night Part 2 was prevented by the actions of Jon, Dany, and finally Arya. Three Heads of the Dragon possibly...?

For me it's more that if it hadn't been for these exception deep dives that ASX does, I never would have learned so much about the wider world of Ice and Fire. I wouldn't have learned that there is so much out there, so many references, so many symbols, all that stuff. It's literally the channel that taught me not to place false stock in the show's prophecies, taught me about the other cultures and THEIR associated/related prophecies, etc etc. I don't know how you'd don't come out the other side of that education and just fully expect every legend or prophecy to be useless in the 'real' world, but come from some deep truth that requires further study. The fact that (so far, 3 episodes might prove it wrong) that neither Jon or Dany literally stabbed eachother in the heart and lit things on fire to chop off all the individual heads of all the Others and people are mad about that is so completely absurd to me.

For all week, I was thinking about e3. But now, and with his video, I finally find peace and start to think that maybe, D&D did know everything would happen if they direct the long night in such a way. I have a hope that knight king is not dead! and prophecies make sense after all! I'm looking forward your livestream right after the show :D

You absolutely nailed it. Beautifully done. Sigh 😓 I love the Theon book quote you put in there. I think I’m the only person unsatisfied with his death (I thought he would go out with the Greyjoys, and his sacrifice was useless cuz it didn’t accomplish anything), but that makes me feel a lot better about it. 💙
