Here’s the GOT S8 Finale video!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Utceb5igEY

This is by far the longest Alt Shift X video ever. There was… a lot to process in this episode. It's the culmination of the GOT Explained series, which began with Season 6 in 2016. We’ve come a long long way since then, and it couldn’t have happened without your support – thank you.

Alt Shift X is now taking a break – there’ll be no new videos for a few months. The Patreon is paused, so you won’t be charged. What do you want to see from ASX when we’re back? Which ASOIAF topics? Which new series? Watchmen, His Dark Materials, Dune? This GOT series was a great learning experience, and now there’s a million possibilities for future videos, and for side-projects like the Alt Shift Podcast. And who knows, maybe The Winds of Winter will materialise...

So thanks again for sticking through this tumultuous final season of Thrones, and here's to new content in the future!

Holly Cannon

Thanks for enhancing (and in s8, kinda salvaging) my GoT experience, enjoy your well-deserved break. I'd love to see His Dark Materials get the ASX treatment :)

Daniel Hunter

Have a relaxing, rejuvenating break! Thank you for all of the content over the years. <3

Ragnar

I'd love more of The Expanse when that returns. I'd also love a primer on His Dark Materials and The Wheel of Time, since both are getting shows... And seem to be ripe for som AltShiftX deep dives. I know pretty much nothing about WOT, but I've heard it's good.

LUCUS S ALLEN

Please more expanse when it returns!

Nick

In terms of non-ASOIAF content when you return, I personally would love it if you reviewed Stranger Things again. Would love to hear your thoughts on Season 2, and the upcoming Season 3 which is due on July 4th. Perhaps you could do some discussion videos for that when you come back in a couple months, provided you're still interested of course. Beyond that, there will be Westworld Season 3 next year, and that's definitely a series that requires the assistance of a fine analyst such as yourself for us to be able to properly process and understand the gorgeous mess they serve us with each episode. And if you're interested in anime/manga, I think Attack on Titan could be a great thing for you to discuss. The anime has been on fire recently, with many people drawing comparisons with GoT. I think those comparisons are more and more valid, and I think AoT has honestly done several things recently that outshine what GoT has managed in the last couple seasons. Recent episodes, in particular, absolutely nail the tone and epic feel that the fight against the White Walkers should have had. A desperate fight for humanity, with heart-pounding speeches, major deaths, and a big fat serving of bittersweet climaxes. Not to mention fantastic character writing, dialogue, voice acting, emotion, and narrative reveals. Definitely an incredible series.

Tyler Mormont

Looking forward to the future of your channel. Let's hope George wasn't lying about dropping next year.

Michael Towns (gamebuoygames)

Was that lil accent added to "democracy" at 8:08 based on the "THIS IS DEMOCRACY MANIFEST" guy haha? Also cheers for putting these kinds of vids out the past many years, you've made the show and mythos a lot easier to understand and get into. Great work dude.

“Ass-hats like Euron” Best comment ever!

Ed Kennedy

Thank you for a great series of videos. Still holding out for more Expanse content, which was something I was sad to see was not mentioned!

Emily

Thank you so much for all your hard work. I read ASOIAF after watching your videos a few years ago and I’m so glad I did. I would love to see Alt Shift X videos about The OA. And I will never get bored of ASOIAF book theory/explanation videos... have a great break!

Vladimir Baciu

Man, you really outdid yourself on this one, kudos!

A little over 10 years ago, I heard a book reviewer on the radio singing the praises of ASoIaF, and mentioning in passing that it was being made into a TV show. I asked a few friends who were into fantasy about it, and they’d all given up on it because the books took too long to come out. I forgot about it until the show started and I enjoyed the first couple of seasons before starting the books and reading behind the show as a kind of ‘top-up’. Then I came across your R+L=J video and realised how incredibly intricate the plot was and I was completely hooked, obsessed ever since. Since then I’ve basically been in a ‘rereadus’ state for at least 6 years. So, in truth, ASX started me on this journey and it’s only fitting that you’ve finished it with the finest piece of work you’ve done. This one’s a keeper - it’s going straight to the pool room! Thanks Shift!

I’m looking forward to hearing Alt Schwift X’s opinion of this final season

Daniel Johnson

A very balanced handling of what was clearly a disappointing finish. (When will the Alt Schwift X take be out???)

Daniel Johnson

I would love to see you do an analysis of the stories behind the stories and handle ASOIAF at a meta level. There are few examples in culture of an initial text and an adaptation having such a strange evolution. (I've heard that something similar happened with a Manga series). The thing that Alt Shift X does that's so indispensable is to break down overwhelming amounts of information into streamlined analysis. I'd love to see that type of handling of the story of George writing the books and everything that we know on the record about how the book was optioned, his relationship to the showrunners and the timeline of how things went wrong and what we know about how the people involved felt. I know that info on this is limited at the moment but it'd still be great to see this broken down. Some day there is going to be a fascinating oral history of all this when enough time has transpired and people start opening about what really went down.

Daniel Johnson

Oh yeah, and if I could have just one present from Alt Shift X, it'd be to have a question answered that I've been posting for years and haven't gotten a reply to: why does Alt Shift X (and basically the entire fan community) keep conflating the legend of Azhor Ahai with the prophecy of the Prince Who Was Promised? They're not the same thing. Where did that conflation originate specifically?

Mykhailo Granik

It would be great to publish the topic of the podcast a week or so before the episode so we had a chance to read it first

Alt Shift X

Melisandre and Aemon talk about Azor Ahai and the prince that was promised interchangeably. Azor Ahai seems to be more of an eastern/Asshai prophecy, and the prince that was promised more associated with the Targaryens. But I think they refer to basically the same idea. Along with Huzhor Amai, Hyrkoon the Hero, Eldric Shadowchaser etc, it seems like many cultures across the world of ice and fire have their own interpretations of the same Azor Ahai story, and the prince that was promised is another one of those.

Rikke Holmberg

I second this! That would definitely make the experience even better.

Daniel Johnson

Thanks for the reply! But I'm afraid your response contains more of the conflation that's been confusing me. This reminds me of the famous Berenstain Bears thing where there was a collective delusion that went on for so long it became impossible to challenge it. Or maybe I’m missing something obvious and everybody else in the fan community is right. Ok, here’s where I’m still confused. Azor Ahai and the cultural iterations of it that exist elsewhere in the world are legends. They're stories of things that happened long ago in the past. They resemble the Flood legend in our world in that they all share similar archetypal features. The Prince Who Was Promised is a prophecy that, as you point out, was more associated with the Targaryens. But the PWIP is not, as you said here, another one of the legends because He is a prophecy. Legends are in the past, prophecies in the future. At some point along the way, an assumption was made that this story is a loop and that everything that happened in the past will happen again in the future. From that assumption, came the secondary assumption that the Prince Who is Promised would repeat the major actions of the legendary character. Not the general components of the legends, but of a specific iteration of those legends: Azhor Ahai, which has many archetypal features that the other legends don't share (lightbringer, the killing of nissa nissa, etc.). As far as I can tell/remember, both of these major assumptions stem only from things Melisandre says in the book (did Aemon make the conflation? I thought he only talked about the PWIP). If I’m right and the entire notion of the Loop, where the future will repeat the past, and the idea that the PWIP will be Azhor Ahai reborn, hinge on the testimony of one of the book’s most unreliable characters: Melisandre. In terms of chain of evidence, this seems like a really terrible basis for a core assumption that the fan community has based so much thought and speculation on. Melisandre’s interpretations are famously off. And yet nobody bothered to question the validity of one of her pet theories? Personally I suspect that the fans were projecting their own assumptions onto the story. The notion of a mythic loop is something we’re all trained to look for in these kinds of stories. I think that the second Melisandre went there, we all took it and ran with it because we wanted to see it.

Kelly Theobald

Alt, you did such a beautiful job on this video. Perfect balance of criticism, positivity, and humor. And I can’t believe you gave Glidus a shoutout 😂 I’m so glad—he deserves lots of fans. Have an excellent vacation, and we’ll see you when you return 😊💜

RaymondBergman

Because of this channel, I read the first book and watched the first season of the show. I didn’t think any of it was bad, it just didn’t stand out to me. Am I missing something? Is there more than what I’m seeing? Thanks

RaymondBergman

Thanks for your work, I’ve found this channel to be a tremendous resource in navigating through both the book and television series’s. I wish you future success in your endeavors and hope that it coincides with my interest. Thanks again and Cheers!

Alt Shift X

Yeah ASX tends to focus strictly on the texts/books/episodes themselves. It'd be tricky to analyse the meta story of GOT's adaptation, because we know so little of what D&D, GRRM, et al were really thinking. I'd hate to misrepresent the work of real people.

OliC

I loved your summary. I feel like there’s a big hole in my life since the show ended. I am so disappointed with a lot of the final season. Its

OliC

it’s * more bitter for me than sweet. I look forward to the books.
