I have a problem with this writing. not only is it japanese stories using the "trope" of history repeating itself and gods "reincarnating" but when the whole premise of the show is to inspire to "set out to sea and make something of yourself" - to make the main character a destined being / a God figure. entirely shits on the idea of inspiring the common man... like compared to Luffy, who is anyone who calls themself a pirate?? - fucking Koby is a better inspiration than Luffy at this point... we're distilled that Luffy might have reached Yonko status on his own but he needed the GOD fruit to become king of pirates which makes the narrative that anyone who sees an olympic athlete can't become that through work and will power - they need genetics and luck so that Shanks randomly brought the fruit to his village and no one telling Luffy how important the fruit was before he could take a bite... and also : Luffy died on that roof, from here on out it's apparently Joyboys will that awakened and took over Luffys body.... narratively that's what Oda set up and I dislike it heavily. even so One piece is still a 9/10 anime

Also, this is the first in a long time that Luffy has been "fun" for his fights. Ever since Marineford, he's been so serious and dour during the big fights, there was none of the zaney energy he used to have. This brought a lot of that back in a new, manic way. It was so GOOD!

One thing I noticed. Kaido's ability to make himself all but invulnerable using his natural endurance, his haki, and dragon scales to tank blows, is USELESS against Luffy's Awakened power since it bypasses all that by literally softening his body enough that HE CAN FEEL EVERY SINGLE BLOW. I imagine Kaido was boggled out of his mind "What the F#ck is HAPPENING?" when Luffy whopped em in the face with that combo punch. Probably hasn't had an ass beating like that in decades.

I get where you're coming from, but disagree. The thing about Luffy getting the fruit, is that the fruit chose him because of who he is and the will he has for freedom. We're told several times that the devil fruits have their own wills, and particularly so for the zoan, and his is even a mythical one. If Luffy wasn't Luffy, wasn't someone who has the will and strength of heart to do the things he's been doing, he wouldn't have been able to awaken the fruit, and hell, the fruit wouldn't even have come to him. We don't know *how* it does it, but the Elders even mention it's been actively avoiding discovery by them. As for "Joyboy's will taking over", that's not the point of "Joyboy". "Joyboy returning" is the idea of a new person taking over the role of a savior, someone to bring true freedom to a world under the heels of a ruthless and unjust government. It's still Luffy, 100%. He just gets giddier as optimism and joy takes hold to let him move as freely as possible. There's a few other things I could add on but that's things that haven't been mentioned explicitly or hinted at yet at this point. In fact, in a sense, this all makes it even more meaningful that Luffy chose to set out DESPITE getting a fruit as "useless" as the gum gum fruit. Remember, it's been laughed at as a useless fruit from the start, and he even despaired that he'd be unable to swim initially. He reached YONKO level with what everyone saw as one of the worst fruits. And brought Kaido of all people to the edge before awakening. And remember that Kaido also has a mythical fruit, he's literally a dragon, one of the most busted fruits we've seen in the whole show.

Outside plot reasons Oda revealed he went full cartoon for gear 5 bc he wanted to be free to do anything he imagined in the manga without being restricted by Luffys powers, so in a sense this awakening theme of freedom extends even beyond the story. On a side note I find very funny that you commissioned that white model way before the reveal, and it matches Luffys form so much!

The thing with everything you're saying, is that Luffy did have to work to get where he was. He wasn't immediately poweful once he ate the fruit, he had to train just to use the "rubber" part of it, which is considered just a basic power of the fruit. As for awakening it, he literally had to get stronger to be able to even get to that point, and (if I recall correctly) had to emulate the "feelings" of the fruit. Like, I swear I remember seeing that Zoan awakenings only occur when the user matches with the fruit. I think it's less that Luffy is a reincarnation of Joyboy, or Nika, and just that he embodies the same qualities of those people/entities. Luffy is not "being possessed", he's still aware of who he is

At first I didn't like G5 and the fruit name change, but then I realized, the fact it's toonforce makes so much sense. Gears 2 through 4 don't make enough sense with rubber. How do you get faster by pumping blood faster? How do you get stronger by filling your hand with air? We allowed it to make sense because it's silly One Piece's handwavey logic, but here we arrive and it makes actual sense. If Luffy thinks it makes sense for his body to behave that way, the attack will work. And now he knows his body can do ANYTHING he finds entertaining.

What are you talking about , Kaido literally mentions in the next episode he is still using it. Did you even watch or read the fight correctly? Luffy literally needs that to damage him , why would he stop using it? Hell he has been using it since he first punched Kaido with red roc. And even if you don't think it has been enough people have been questioning the way luffys fruit works for like all of one piece because it isn't how rubber should work , it being fictional rubber could have been an explanation but characters in OP thought this.

Im so glad you noticed the fact that, yes, this form is fully Luffy. Luffy knew how to get edgy from time to time when pushed, but Luffys essence is joy, and this really represents that. A lot of anime fans don't really like it, but people gotta realize this was always what OP is, now its just turned up to 11 (or in this case, to 5)

Finally. Luffy's gears is one of, if not, the best, most fun, and most creative leveling up systems in all of fiction. Even the twist that his Devil Fruit is not what we thought makes sense and feels well thought out. As someone who got into One Piece around the second half of high school when the dub(yes I primarily watch the dub) just caught up to Water 7, the timing of the gears being revealed to me as I grew up watching it greatly boosted my opinion of the show as they kinda matched my mindset at the time......does that make sense? Either way, I'm so glad that we got to this part without Alicia getting Gear 5 spoiled to her. Although it was a bit surprising that she actually kinda guessed that Luffy is connected to Nika in some way........I mean now that I think about it it does feel kinda obvious now, but still.

I'd love it Alicia reacted to the English dub version of this fight after she finishes with Wano. Kaido's EN va's performance is a bit meh in some of the early parts of this fight, but Luffy's EN va's laugh is very contagious......or at least it is too me......I guess, I don't know. I've rewatched this fight so many times in both languages, its just that good.

so Now that she has gotten here. And she knows that Luffy has the Fruit of the sun god. Its ok to point out that all the people who talk about after the battle on Wano side. Always refer to it as the New Dawn. As the Sun shinning on Wano. Everyone from the straw hats to the samurai. Also to note. A few really cool bits. The Original Pirate group of Fisher Tiger. The man who freed slaves. And that was Jumbies original group. Was the Sun Pirates. Its why they have the sun Tattoo. Makes you think that maybe Fisher Tiger Knew the Legend of Nika. And even back in Sky piea. When they Drums are going in the end. And its after the battle and the guy thinks they are War Drums. We see him come out to see luffy sillouted in the fire in a similar pose. We also hear about the sun god for the first time here. From a Tribe with roots back to before the void centry. (They were FAR behind modern times when Nolan found them 400 years ago.) This ties up a lot of points. But opens so many more. Ones we are STILL learning about.

I'm sure someone commented about this already but in one of his earlier SBS segments Oda responded to a fan asknig how Luffy could possibly beat Kaido with "I have no idea and I hope I can figure something satisfying out" and well... he sure fucking did. Every other Shouen leans more into serious and melancholy type vibes; some like Bleach naturally trend towards it, some like Naruto force themselves into it and it gets kinda silly, but One Piece goes in the opposite direction, embracing the silly and goofy parts of its setting for such a climactic fight. For all the issues I do have with Oda's writing at times, he is still an absolute top-tier writer with extreme passion for his life's work even after 20+ years. And tis beutiful to see, and especially beautiful to see it animated so fucking well.

So just rewatching this but I think something that gets forgotten because how long ago it was. But Orochi to get Kanjuro to do this entered a suicide pact and since Kanjuro failed to blow up Onigashima he returned to fulfil the pact so both he Orochi would die.
