I kid you not, any time Gear 5 is on the screen or in the manga, it is pure joy. I live for it at this point. Luffy was already my favourite character but when this happened, it really took him to a whole new level. Not just power-wise but overall character-wise. It's so beautiful.

Here’s the irl Joyboy lore: Joyboy is actually the name of an eternally smiling spirit of liberation in Haiti that uses his drums to make the oppressed dance their fears and worries away. Joyboy’s description in ‘The Encyclopedia of Things that Never Were’ (published in 1987): “The West Indian character who personifies the human need to dance, sing, and jubilate. He is a relation of the Lord of the Dancers who inspires festivals in colder countries and it seems likely that he traveled to the Caribbean with an early shipment of slaves from West Africa. Joyboy smiles perpetually at all the foibles and problems of mankind and cures human troubles by tapping out an irresistible rhythm on his drum. Whoever hears the music of Joyboy is compelled to dance and sing along until he or she has shaken the black cloak of despair from the shoulders...” We also know that Oda learned about Joyboy from this specific book because it contains not only an exact description of Nami’s wind-knots, but also an image of “Joyboy” drumming that looks exactly like Oda’s silhouette for him since Skypiea. Also I highly recommend the book it’s by Micheal Page and Robert Ingpen; Really fun read, especially if you like obscure indigenous folklore and want a peak into the kinda stuff Oda uses as inspiration for his story.

Alicia, at around 17:53 or 17:54 there’s is a frame where, for a Split second, Luffy flipped off Kaido. It’s Really hard to catch, but it’s there. Just thought I would point that out cause it’s hilarious to think that Luffy of all people would do such a thing.

People who complain that is too looney toony really hadnt being paying attention to the +1000 episodes of the anime: luffy ALWAYS used toon-like attacks. You just have to watch tom&jerry and you can get the full repertoire of luffy attacks. His moves always have been based on what luffy thinks it can do. I mean, in enies lobby he inflated his arm WITH AIR and said it was the fist of a giant. Then Lucci said "thats just a big balloon full of air, there's no way is stronger" and then get hit by the fist of a giant because luffy believed that it was that. He was a Zoan type all the time and thats why he has 'forms', using its imagination powers all over since episode one and the flashbacks from when he was a kid. He has rubber body and imagination and as long as he can imaginate it, he can do it, but his powers need to be "awakened" (g5) to be able to do whatever he wants as a literal god of liberation

I like how Luffy takes the seriousness out of these big fights. Oppression thrives off of overwhelming violence and fear so it’s fitting that the “warrior of liberation” makes a complete joke of his opponent and exclusively uses the silliest attacks imaginable to win.

The thing I love most about Gear 5 is that Its this awesome powerful transformation that came in while fighting an extremely strong opponent with huge stakes. Something common in Shonen. (Bleach Naruto DBZ and dozen of others.) But unlike just about all the others that are based off of super serious moods, loseing control, Being super BA, or being enraged.... Luffy is silly. He does not stand and aura farm. He does not scream his head off. He is not some out of control thing. These things are pretty much troupes now. Ones that often get repeated in the same anime. (Love DBZ.... But we got super Sayian and then slightly different hair options over over over for years. ) But Gear 5 is a full change. Its the combination of just about everything luffy is. Its happy and Joyfull and unique. And it plays such a strong narrative role in bringing the entire stroy together. Its not just a powerup for the sake of it. THATS why it is my fav anime transformation.

It's crazy to think that, this whole time, he have already SLIGHLTY been using gear 5's power without realizing. Inflating your arm does NOT make it more powerful it is literally just air, and other random attacks where he uses his creativity to do things that SHOULDN'T be possible or work in certain ways! All of this happened just because Luffy IMAGINES that's how it works and his "the mask" ass power makes it so! (which is sick)

Kaido noticed when luffy started bouncing his arms midair as if it was a wall, which in kaidos words, it makes no sense for rubber, it need to hit something to bounce as luffy did in skypiea against enel in the ship bouncing punchs in the wall or even in wholecake to beat the haki of katakuri, but there he use it witout a wall and again agaisnt doflamingo midair he bounced because he thought it was possible

pretty sure the "explanation" for that is that he "hardens" his arm with haki to change it's direction but still, THAT'S NOT HOW HAKI WORKS. Mfer just THINKS that how it works and his "the mask" ass power makes it so. "The power of I M A G I N A T I O N"

way i thought it worked was that the haki hardened the outside layer, and the inside bounced off of the outer layer somehow? - i mean, after the Gear 5 reveal, it doesn't need to be explained anymore, but it's still fun to think about in theory
