Dune part 2 AND Superman in one day? LISAN AL-GAIB!

DuskopBBX

She already did, like a couple days ago

TwojaStaraIFrytki .

I just can't...this whole "i'm not a messiah"/"he is the messiah" is cursed for me, thanks to Life of Biran xD

Robert Collard

The scene where Paul gets all the fremen on his side is still one of the most awe-inspiring and (for the story) terrifying scenes I have ever seen in a movie in a long time. At that moment anyone who thinks about the long game realized he just doomed trillions to their deaths with that one speech.

Bigbleu

The best statement I’ve heard about Paul is that this story is a coming of age. Paul is the main character but not the protagonist.

GeneralBass

To explain how the worm riding works: the hooks pull open the segments, exposing the air valves. The worms do not like getting sand in them, so they roll that side up and keep it above the sand. By pulling one side more than the over, the worm rolls more and you steer it.

Tor Andre Frantsvaag

are you planning to see the original movie aswell ? just curious i think this was a good remake of the original movie and the book it was based on

Nym

I Fucking adore these movies, I'm so damn excited for the 3rd film when ever it comes out!!!!!!

Irishlad 🐝🟣🟢

Amazing movie amazing commentary every time you made a prediction i was sitting like Stilgar says "as written" and "lisan al gaieb"

Adrian

I don't think they are allowed by the fans to stop because the books have more story than just 2 movies to cover

Azetherion

“Baron Harkonnen reminds me of Jabba the Hut.” My Sister in Christ, Star Wars was INSPIRED BY DUNE!

Robert Collard

He’s not Lisan Al Ghaib, he’s a very naughty boy

Zach567

You did not pay attention, 2 of the 3 Atreides prisoners were drugged they can't coordinate.

LISAN AL-GAIB

Lance Ivy

you say their name superfast both time so i always miss it but whoever the cohost is is kind of a realy fun vibe i like them alot

Lance Ivy

i also dont speak french but i think with all the lofty nobilty and like hyper royalty and Karne or whetever . french would be perfect

Phantom Penance

Hard to imagine in the scale of the Dune series, this is STILL just the beginning. Like, Frodo just left the Shire beginning.

RF

So I don't think I'm the first one to say this, but the point of the book is more or less the dangers of the Strong Man archetype leader and how it leads to fascism. The idea of this person who comes along and is likable and has the right charisma and rises up and steers other forms of power towards himself. Someone who everyone else bassically worship as a deity or a Chosen One. How easy it to excuse a lot of his later decisions or give him the benefit of the doubt because you trust him etc. BTW, AoT probably took a lot of inspiration from this. Eren also can see the past and future memories of his line, rises as the savior of the Eldians, and becomes the corner stone for a fascist movement in his country that then seeks to genocide any other human being who isn't them/carry out a Holy War. . . And um, yeah. A lot people kind of didn't really get it? And to this day a lot of people side with the guy who lit sets himself up as a God Emperor and declares a Holy War against anyone who opposes him.

Bologna Amputation

Very much so. It all but states that power is only safe in the hands of as many as possible.

Fei Ashtear

These movies covered the first book. Frank Herbert wrote 6. If they actually adapted all six, that would be crazy.

Anaximander

No spoilers, I just want to say the book/movie after Messiah might be your favorite. Denis Villeneuve has said he intents to finish the "trilogy" of the second book, Dune Messiah. Warner's confirmed movie is greenlit. However he left open it he wants to do Children and God Emperor, implying he wants to hand over adapting Herbert's mainline books to another director. While Comments here are right that Dune universe is deep and rich in lore and stories like Lord of the Rings universe and books beyond Trilogy and Hobbit, Depending on who you ask the Main Story of the series are considered either Dune 1-3 or Dune 1-4. That makes Dune, Parts 1 &2 covering first book, Dune Messiah following aftermath of the first book, Children of Dune many years after with next generation, and God Emperor of Dune taking a deep time skip. No spoilers if you want to read books yourself. First Dune book is a tome, and answers many more questions you have many films don't cover because we don't have enough time. The next 2 books really delve deep into the consequences of the first Dune book/movies and the decisions and actions done by Paul Atriedes. Also, as pointed out by Comments, Dune has inspiration many tropes, concepts, and ideas found in many other sci-fi stories and movies from 80's and 90's. Star Wars being one of main examples cited. Happy you loved the movies, hope you read Dune books (1-4, but ending at Children is okay too). Here's to couple years when Dune Messiah comes into theatres.

Matt O'Doherty

so another bit of backstory. Baron Harkonnen was once known as one of the most handsome men in the empire and much desired. When the bene Gesserit approached him about creating an heir he raped the Sister who went to him. using those weird powers she created...yes created... an std and infected him. it attacked his ability to burn fat and crippled his sex drive and sterilized him., which is why he is the way he is now (fat and murderous) This sister was Jessica's mother.

J F

I will never understand why they made Chani leave in the movie, in the book Paul tells her that Irulan will only be a political marriage and that he loves her not in the slightest. Even Jessica tells Chani that "in the future history books they will call us brides". Refering to the fact that Jessica wasn't married to Leto either. The director said the change was to have a more somber ending. Paul gained much but lost Chani type deal but in the next book (part 1 and 2 was the original Dune book and the next movie is the second book) Chani plays a very important role so to expect people to be all shook about the ending doesn't make sense. The next movie will have to waste time getting them back together.

Lance Ivy

i dont like jessica in this adaptation she too passive they took a panner and schemer and stratagist the woman who dared to try to birth god so that she can take controle of the universe . and insted made it all happenstance . she planned this paul is not paulina for just that reason .

Kyutoko

Oh c'mon! This is as far as my knowledge goes. This was basically the end of the 1984 film. I can't imagine what they're doing in the next one in 2026. I mean, I have a few theories. But they're all speculation. But man, Paul got culty in this one. Even more than the other two versions.

Levi Price

a very important piece of lore the movies don't mention, the worms are the spice. The spice is what a dead worm turns into

Lance Ivy

its arrakus ....doing it in the sand is the only way you even if your on a rock i promis it covered in sand

Aphelion Audio

the movie isn’t just black and white when it’s on the harkonnen home world, in lore it’s the systems “black sun” that literally causes everything to look like that if it’s under direct sunlight, which is why you thought it switched back to color when it showed the interior shot lit by artificial lighting which allowed color to be visible, but slowly transitioned back to black and white as they got close to the outside and the sunlight

Aphelion Audio

also the baby is literally talking to jessica, as the baby is a woman and because jessica drank the water of life and became a reverend mother, so did her daughter inside her, meaning she gained all the memories of every reverend mother, including jessica, and jessica has the babies, so they can basically communicate telepathically

Narluga

not sure if im correct but im pretty sure when he had the vision of him dying in the first movie that was him seeing his figurative death. paul the boy must die so LISAN AL-GAIB can rise.

#Shuttershadesupreme

the emperor had the gal to call duke Leto weak, yet he had his elite forces and another noble house sent out just to kill him out of fear. the level of nerve and ego on this wrinkly old f*ck XD

largo778 .

Not quite, but close. The Spice is the waste of the Sand Trout (the larval form of a Sand Worm).

largo778 .

The plan is Dune Massiah, book 2 of the series.

largo778 .

and the Sister in question is the one that tested Paul in the first movie.

largo778 .

The life cycle of the Sand Worm involves a larval form called a Sand Trout which will surround and seal away the ground water, eventually absorbing it. That is why Arrakis has very little water on it.

largo778 .

who else here started thinking "he's not the massiah, he's a very naughty boy!" (Monty Python Life of Brian" reference)

Aphelion Audio

a few things the movies leave more vague than the books is that paul and even his father aren’t exactly “the good guys” either, paul’s father wanted to go to arrakis EXPLICITLY to exploit the military power of the fremen and the whole lisan al gaib thing isn’t some magical prophecy, it’s a story carefully planted by the bene gesserit over centuries so that they could take control over arrakis when the time came and the Kwisatz Haderach was revealed

RF

To give her a character one thing. I'm glad that Chani in the movie had enough self respect to just be Paul's side chick. It also turns her into the Freeman PoV character who looks around at what Paul is doing and goes nope. Which is way better than what she is in the books.

RF

That's from the dubiously canon prequels written by the Author's son. And given how much he misses the point of the books when he "completed" the series I wouldn't take much of what he wrote all that seriously. It's also not the only weird "this feels feels like bad Dune fanfic" that the prequels got.

mld-Drake

"but you're not even bald" i died laughing at that line. timing was perfect

Hugh Mungus

55:30 He's talking about "Powerless" here, it had Vanessa Hudgens and Alan Tudyk, who ironically is in this very movie as the Superman robot 4. Very good show, I don't even think they got to finish out the entire season before they cancelled it but I highly recommend it to anyone who likes comedies or superhero adjacent stuff.

Phantom Penance

I think it’s to help capture the main theme of Dune: beware messiahs. Without Chani’s visible apprehension to everything happening, the uninformed audience views Paul’s rise as an absolute triumph.

Phantom Penance

Paul won the fight, but the cost was great. He lost his freedom, his individual identity, the love of his life, and his adopted culture. The Fremen had a rich and personal culture before him; now they have been radicalized into his personal death cult, ready to raze the universe in his name. The war for Arrakis will be a trifle compared to the Holy War he started.

Max

52:00 paul's gonna Call the Worm ifuknowwhatimean

Hugh Mungus

lmao yea I just noticed, gonna leave it as a monument to my shame

Timothy Dowell

My favorite book series right here. 3rd movie next year! I hope the 3rd book gets adapted.

SquaredSpekz

It wasn't a black and white filter in that arena scene. Everything becomes monochromatic in the sunlight of that planet.

asta

if I recall correctly, the way they got that distinctive look was by filming with infrared lenses

PurportedGrey

Denis said if they did he wouldn't be attached, also from my understanding I think they are adding some elements from Children to Messiah/Part 3.

PurportedGrey

You're right on the money. That's the whole point of Jamis' death and being his "friend" that they weren't understanding in Pt.1, he's unintentionally teaching him how Arrakis works by demanding and gling through with that honor duel, and killing Jamis is what he needs to do to start his journey to become 'The One'.

Julio Castillo

The actor of Feyd Rautha is Austin Butler, he was a recurring actor in several of the most popular live-action shows of Disney and Nickelodeon... like Hannah Montana and ICarly.... which i think is one of the most insane transitions in an acting career i have ever seen. Also... the scenes in black and white are not just a creative choice, it's a lore-accurate depiction... the Harkonnen Homeworld (Giedi Prime) orbits a Black Sun (they mentioned it at the beginning of the Colisseum Scene)... so everything that is hit by it's light appears as Black and White, that's why in all the in-doors scenes the characters look normal... because they are iluminated by artificial lights. And like i said in the first Dune reaction.... as far as we know... the next Dune movie (which will be called Dune Messiah) will be the last one, the Director (Denis Villeneuve) is stepping out of the Franchise after it... so even if the Movie Adaptations continue... there's no guarantee that they will have the same level of vision or quality of these 2. But yes... there is enough material for a lot more movies, if they decide to Adapt all 6 Dune books written by Frank Herbert (the original author) then my estimate would be a total of 10 to 11 Films.

Cameron Geddes

im pretty sure the guy at the start shouted "No shields!" is because something vary bad happens to the gunner AND shield guy if a lasgun and shield interact i wont explain more incase people want to read the book and find out themselves or if its mentions in the future part 3 but i doubt it will be as its more of a lore excuse for lasguns being rare more then a real plot point.

George McCall

Now that you have seen both the movies, I would Highly suggest watching the SciFi 3 part Mini Series (6 parts if you include children of DUNE) to fill in the blanks and see some of the stuff they cut/changed from the Novel.

SakakiMaya

I've never read the books but apparently they left out some dialogue at the end. Paul's mom talks to Chani and tells her that it's a political marriage but the concubines wield the real power. Having been a concubine herself who gave birth to Paul she knows what she's talking about.

Mystchevious

Regardless of what you would prefer she be, her role as a concubine and love of Paul are the crux of future stories. To take that away from her doesn't make her stronger it just makes a weaker story. Paul does mention that she will come around eventually so I am assuming the director understands that.

DoctorGeagle

They also left out a line from Paul talking with the princess. After saying that he would marry her to become legitimate emperor he makes it clear that he would never love her, they would never share a bed, she will never have his children or any children for that matter and she should really get used to writing books because that would be her entire legacy. But if he said that then Chani couldn't throw a girl boss temper tantrum and storm off like an angry teenager.

PurportedGrey

Your fear of a bad sequel isn't possible: 1. Becasue it's a Denis Villenueve movie, might not be your cup of tea, but he always makes an amazing movie. 2. It's the continuation of the first books story, so if you loved the first half of the story, you're gonna love the 2nd half. Dune is one of the best if not the best Scifi series, only series close to it in my personal opinion, would be The Expanse.

Skebaba

Yes and no. It's only ONE of the potential outcomes when a lasgun & a shield collides. Sometimes the target will just die, sometimes the target & user die, and sometimes AoE nuclear detonation happens on both sides, wiping out everyone within both radiuses. It's pretty RNG heavy & all that

Skebaba

Kinda sus how the evil asshole mfs inhabited a star system w/ a evilass sun 😭

DragonPup

I admit I was also very invested in what your cat was doing. :-D

Joshua Garingan

They didn't really leave it out, rather they changed her character and arc to show that becoming the Lisan al-Gaib would have tragic consequences for Paul. It's a way to address Frank Herbert's regret that people thought Paul becoming the Lisan al-Gaib was a good and cool thing instead of being tragic and horrific.

Vlastik Cadra

in the book each chapter starts with quatation from Irulan book she written about the events and Paul, making her first real apearance in the book quite something. Chani shows much more understanding of the situation in the book, but she is also already married to Paul and they already had a baby, which actualy dies during the events (I hope I remeber that correctly)

Rej

LISAN AL-RATIB!

Valter Fara

I remember reading the book, and seeing the notes of the Princess before each chapter, giving clues of what awaits and how Paul is seen, along other characters, like Dr. Yueh and the fate of the Princess in essence, being the author of Paul's Bible.

largo778 .

Nope, Sand Plankton. Water is actually deadly to an adult Sandworm, which is why the larval form absorbs and encapsulates it.

Egregore

So those skin flaps with weird nostrils on the sandworms are used to collect and filter the sand they dig through, passively supplying the worms with enough clean groundwater to maintain themselves, grow bigger, and continue digging until they die. Also that massive sandworm Paul was riding wasn’t special or anything; there are hundreds of thousands of fully mature sandworms on Arrakis at any given moment and most of them grow that big towards the end of their lifecycle. It’s just that riding those elder sandworms is normally only done by highly skilled and experienced Fremen warriors, not by foreign teenagers on their first try.

Egregore

Paul’s goal was never to save the Fremen; it was to avenge House Atreides and destroy their enemies. The only reason he even wanted to integrate with the Fremen in the first place is because he knew they could help him get back at the Harkonnens.

Egregore

Yeah you’re right, I dunno why I thought it was water specifically when their whole thing in the books was that water is like kryptonite to them.

LuxLoser

In the book, when Feyd-Rautha bombs SietchTabr, Chani and Paul already have a child, Leto. The baby dies in the bombing, and his death is part of what drives Paul to stop resisting the vision. The Harkonnens took his father, took friends, and once they took his child, Paul had enough of being the better man.

Alex Pinals

Sand worm, i haven't read the books or anything but as i understand it the holes in the worm are how it breathes so the fremen pulling the flaps up forces the worm to surface from the sand so to not breathe in all that sand. That would also imply it has that all over its body and can breathe through whatever part of it is above the sand.

J

I don't recall those other possibilities, but a non-zero chance of mutual destruction through nuclear annihilation would be the only explanation i'd need to hear to not F around shootin at shields.

Leticia

damn I knew that this story felt familiar to me, aot really did the same thing, that's crazy

MrDudePerson

Looks like they got...Paulinated

Linnaeus

Close! In the books, the worms are described as having segmented, overlapping plates as part of their hide (something like a snake's scales or maybe an armadillo or pangolin), and the hooks catch on the fine edges between them, pulling them open which lets sand start abrading at the more sensitive exposed flesh underneath. To relieve the irritation, the sandworm A) moves to keep the the exposed area above the sand and B) rolls to keep it as high off the ground level as possible. Repositioning the hooks to make them roll is how you get the worm to turn and steer it.

Linnaeus

Close. Paul actually makes a point of publicly humiliating Irulan. In the same scene where they announce that he'll take her as a wife (where Chani ran away in the movie), in the BOOKS Paul basically says outright "But I'm never going to love you, or be intimate with you, or let you have an heir with me because THIS is Chani, the woman I ACTUALLY love, and she's going to have my kids. Our marriage is going to be entirely cold and political, so deal with it." and Chani's entire character is very different. In the books, she actually has total faith in Paul as the Lisan Al-Gaib and the chosen one. They basically moved a lot of Paul's internal doubt to Chani, and in the books there's never a rift between them like we see opening at the end of this movie.

Twisted Fictions

I love this series the further I get into it. The 'religion is dangerous and bad' lesson gets more and more on the nose, which is FUN, but the world itself is also rich and vibrant and not afraid to be outright alien

Miklar Sihn

In the books, the stuff that comes from drowning a baby worm is called "The Water of Death". It comes from the death of a worm, of their god. A reverend mother creates a counter-agent that transforms it into "The Water of Life". Which is then taken by the Sietch and makes them all really high and often quite horny.

Miklar Sihn

Reverend Mothers can access the memories of all their female ancestors. The goal with the Kwisatz Haderach, a 10.000 year long program of breeding, is to create a male Reverend Mother that can access both. So an example is that Paul knew about the Baron, because he could access his memories.

Call me Lilly, Lilith if ya Nasty.

Yeaaah... I remember that bit. It may have seemed really cool in 1965 but I don't think 'The way to be a girl-boss is to open your legs for powerful men' would hit the same with today's audience.

Call me Lilly, Lilith if ya Nasty.

"You die like an animal." ...and then Paul stabs the Baron in the side of the neck, exactly where the Gom Jabbar would go when someone failed The Test.

Call me Lilly, Lilith if ya Nasty.

If you're wondering why Christopher Walken is the Emperor, check out the OG music video for Fatboy Slim's 'Weapon of Choice'.

Kyutoko

"It's a figure of speech. You know what I mean." Sure... Thanos...

Kyutoko

Jessica is talking to Alia, not crazy or imagining it. Reverend Mothers who have taken the Water of Life can speak to each other telepathically and Alia has 90 generations or more of inherited memories even as a fetus.

Kyutoko

As I understand it, thousands of years before this, humans created sentient AI that enslaved them. After finally rebelling and securing victory, they forbid the creation of ANY machine that could "think like a man" which is why it's both high tech, and low tech, at the same time. Dune takes place roughly 20,000 years in our current future.

TorturedArtist

Strongly recommend any and everyone to listen to the audiobooks for this series before watching the movie, you miss a LOT of the plot just watching the movie. Listen to “Dune”, then “Children of Dune” to get a clearer picture of everything

Matthieu Paty

them expecting part 3 to be about the war against the houses is so cute XD

Zachary McCann

Man rewatching this reaction and getting to Partywolf going "man I hope the baby doesn't get any trauma". *drinks water while sweating*
