I mean there isn't any confirmed cases of this actually being done but the description is pretty well known and it is that they hack off your ribs from behind to pull out the lungs intact and spread them out as wings hence blood eagle, the cut off ribs are just discarded though

Another movie like this might be the original "The Wicker Man" from 1973. Not the 2006 Nicolas Cage remake, although that is worth a watch for how bad it is.

All that comes to mind with this movie is how I would immediately switch to survival mode after the halfway mark. I'd be asking so many questions of how to properly respect the community, how to stay out of trouble, and what each part of the festival entails. I'd be coordinating every outsider to stick together, gather and share information, etc. I'd even tell my partner that we will have a serious convo about our relationship AFTER we get through this and are home safely, but that my number one priority is our survival. I would be 100% "smile and wave"-mode until we could safely get the heck out. Does this make me a lame character in such a film? Yes. Does this mean I am most likely to be killed off in a horror film for fun horror to happen? Yes. Does that mean I was at least the smartest one in the cast? Also yes.

So I've heard of the cliff jumping thing before but it was different. so for the medieval Nordic people, there were two afterlives Helhiem. Which wasn't a place of punishment or anything, it was just a basic afterlife you would go there and forget. or if you die in glory, you might be chosen to go and become an apocalypse warrior. Sometimes, as it turns out, though really good warriors don't die, they live to an old age ...... like 37 lol .... so in order to give them a chance at Valhalla, they would go up to a cliff, give a battle cry, and try to fight the air ......the air is undefeated.

So, the things breathing in the chicken coop scene are actually his lungs. That's a ritual Nordic execution method called a Blood Eagle. They basically, pulled your lungs out of your back like wings and let you suffer until you died if I remember right.
