I am terrible at recognizing most actors and actresses, so I always saw Winona Ryder's name at the start but didnt know who she played since I only recognize her in Beetlejuice. Her playing Joyce was SUCH a good choice.

I'll add something they missed, the buddy system wouldn't have helped, unless they were practically holding hands, because what happened to her was like what happened to Hopper in the shed when he was looking for signs of Will. The officer was yelling at him from the outside, but Hopper heard nothing until he got inside the shed as well. Same thing has happened every time the monster is approaching or there's one of those portals somewhere near, the nearby area starts "misbehaving" like lights flickering and sounds from further away go quiet. To use the teachers tightrope example, things start becoming weird when near those portals, if one existed he said "I think we'd know."

I feel the need to autistically infodump about D&D. Don't misunderstand me, I don't think the show is any less of an achievement because it gets some D&D trivia wrong but I also feel like I'm being "um actually" baited and I'm just gonna take the bait this time: In 1983, there was no "Vale of Shadows" in D&D. That name would first be used in the 2000 PC game Icewind Dale where it describes an actual vale in the Faerûn in the Forgotten Realms setting, same setting as the Baldur's Gate games. Forgotten Realms (created by Ed Greenwood) did exist, first appearing in the Dragon magazine in 1981, and later as the "Grey Box" released in 1987, a fancy big release with a big bible for the setting and everything. Still no Vale of Shadows at that point. There was such a thing as the Plane of Shadows however, although it exists as a single paragraph in Deities & Demigods (1980). It is described as the result of the interaction between the Positive Material Plane and the Negative Material Plane, light and darkness meeting to create shadow. It doesn't really match the "Vale of Shadows" described in the show though. Much later we'd get the Shadowfell in 4th edition which kind of smooshed together some older concepts like the Plane of Shadow and the Ravenloft setting. It is more like a distinct, different place rather than a mirror dimension though. Anyways, again let me clear: this is still one of the single greatest seasons of television I've ever seen. It just gets a lot of things wrong about 80s Dungeons & Dragons which is something that is close to my heart and I have autism so sometimes I can't quite hold myself back from infodumping. I'll probably do it again.

Another great episode and reaction! But holy shit, there's like 6 or 7 things that are just completely retconned or forgotten about by S5 in this episode, specifically Nancy talking about how her parents got together and the magnetic fields of the upside-down gates.

it's the opposite for me, watching and listening to One Piece, all the times people said the word "usotski" when the subtitles say "liar" was how I learned Uso means "lie" him being designed after Pinnochio helped, it's the same with the other tiny crumbs of Japanese I picked up, Luffy says "naruhodo" all the time so I know it means like "I understand", and I feel like I learned "Yare yare" from Zoro and not JoJo

Steve did not have the right to do the equivalent of potentially thousands of dollars of destruction of property because he was angry another teen peeped on his gf at a house party. Like tell an authority and/or maybe punch the guy responsible. But putting that much additional financial strain on a low income family when you KNOW they're going through the loss of a child is fucked up. Steve is a redeemable character and I like him but he 100% was in the wrong there. Y'all are hating on Jonathan a little hard.

I love that you start to really notice in this episode that each little group is behaving like they are in a different suspense genre. The middle schoolers have their paranormal science fiction investigation, the high schoolers are monster hunting, and the adults are diving into the government coverup conspiracy.

What is your point? Wanting to say that or send that message doesn't justify what Steve did. It was actually worse than telling an authority since Hopper likely would've been sympathetic to the Byers' situation, and even had Jonathan been detained, his bail could've easily been less than the cost of replacing a nice camera.
