All because of a paranoid-schizophrenic parent, terrible conduct by interviewers and sensationalism by talk show hosts like Oprah, Sally Jessy Raphael and Geraldo. Just something I think of whenever I hear it mentioned.

weird fact: I actually have a connection to a "death cult." If you remember the Heaven's Gate cult, 39 members decided to "exit" the world because they thought there was a UFO behind a comet. They were identical outfits and had exact bus fair in their pockets because apparently it was needed to get on the UFO. They also had Purple Death Shrouds. Those shrouds were made using 40 yards of purple microfiber, they paid cash, and apparently got a discount because they were good customers. My mom worked at the fabric store they got the fabric from... well, a store in the chain, they bought the fabric from a different store but they didn't have enough and had to ship it from the store my mom was at.
