God Subaru is my favorite MC of all time. Even in the later season despite how fucked up it is, I still fuck with him HEAVY Like I genuinely can't think of a SINGLE character with as much development as him. If I was going to pick a second, probably Thorfinn from Vinland Saga, not only as an MC but as a genuine inspiration (too bad Alicia never watched season 2)

he's not there yet, but Rudeus from Mushoku Tensei may end up being a great character arc for an MC. although subaru got there much faster and in a diferent way. meanwhile, Sword Art Online had a late character growth instead. They were extremely plot driven for first couple of seasons, and then laid some groundwork in GGO and then BROKE our MC in Alicization/warofunderworld emotionally, but nothing even close to subaru. I have a soft spot for SAO, but I admit Subaru's character himsel has to carry scenes sometimes.

You know I don't think I ever realized that Subaru was actually physically suffering from just being their during that whole convo with Emily, and I've seen this scene(dubbed) 3 times before this reaction. Really puts things into perspective just how far he's willing to go for her........other than the several awful loops full of pain, torture and deaths anyway.

The biggest problem in Emilia's head is her twisted view of love: up to this point in time she has experienced so little love that her view of people that love her is "I love you because I have expectations of you". Then Subaru comes around and turns that all on its head: "I have expectations of you because I love you". It makes all the difference in the world - conditional versus unconditional love - and before Subaru came along, she only remembers conditional love (yeah, I know people are going to say Puck loves Emilia unconditionally... but did he? Perhaps he did, but their relationship was based on a contract, a contract he broke in the end)

...and in the end, Subaru broke his promise with Emilia to vandalize a gravesite - and in the end she couldn't be any happier (even if she thinks he's an idiot for doing it). Echidna is going to be so pissed.

I really love that seeing and hearing Emilia finally letting her guard down, Subaru instantly recognized how she felt. He did the same thing Rem did for him, listed a few things he didn’t like that she (Emilia) did, then let her know it’s okay, because he loves a hundred other things about her even more. It’s okay to mess up, you’re still loved just the same.☺️

The Otto backstory feels like very good autism representation with how everything is loud, confusing and it being difficult to verbalize the problems.

Rudeus is ruined by the whole pedobait bullshit that goes on in that show, half of it is completely unecessary and it just drives people away from witnessing that behind that weird bs there's actually a really good show

Yeah, I guess I've just seen enough anime and particularly isekais, to just turn off my logic brain about "that's not how OUR world works" and then try to just enjoy the plot and the intents behind the characters and the era\context\setting, but I know it's not something people can easily brush off. The fact that every reactor that watches has show is given a disclaimer to stick through that bs and "it gets better don't worry", feels like it's self-gatekeeping
