Black and Brown bears are VERY different. Black bears are generally more cowardly and will flee rather than deal with people, but will fight if bothered, especially a mother with cubs. Brown bears are the ones that will casually walk up to you, swat you to the ground, and eat you alive. Look at them wrong, they will kill you. You have no hope of escape. If you run, they are more likely to pursue you. Back away slowly, don't turn away, and be as uninteresting as possible. The "play dead" approach does not mean you will be unscathed. They may still bite and claw a little, but if you fight, they will end you. Best defense for either is either never going where they are or bear spray, pepper spray for bears.

Thankfully the timeline for eps are "months/weeks between" unless they're back-to-back ones, so we can figure that a few months have passed since he had that talk with Gideon and got some help in that time. It doesn't break the immersion much when you take that into consideration.
