Chainsaw man is so fucking insane lmao

Dooba Dooba

Crazy how the first section is basically an almost rape scene. Her drunk self taking advantage of a drunk Denji, who is a minor no less (I don't think it's legal for a (probable, wasn't confirmed just an "if I remember correctly" from Denji) 16 year-old to screw an adult). Himeno sucks as a person. Getting someone to smoke, and effectively attempting to rape a minor. JUST REALIZED. SHE ALMOST GOT HIM DRUNK, KISSING AND PUKING IN HIS MOUTH, PUT THE ALCHOHOL SHE DRUNK IN HIM. She got a minor drunk too ;-; Was originally 3/10, now its 1/10 on her.

im really surprised no one told you to watch the opening scene in dub for the

I'm getting a headache from your constant pausing. You don't need to analyze every. Single. Fucking. Shot. It's not that deep... I'm not talking about the show, I'm talking about your commentary. You've already mentioned how annoying it is for a show to be hand holding constantly, and yet you do that exact same thing when you point out every single thing. It's one thing if you miss something because the dialogue or animation is too fast and you have to rewind to not miss what happened, but what you're doing is just shitting on the intended pacing, the directorial pacing they worked very hard to establish. I hate that. How can you get a genuine experience if the important beats are being spliced by your ramblings? I get it, it was an intense episode, but your attention span is like a dog's and you detract from your own viewing experience just to say "wow, look how cool that was, look, LOOK. Can't you see what I saw? Did you see that framing, that composition, that talent, that thing that's right on the screen that we are both looking at? Isn't that so very duper amazing? Oh by the way, this scene is special because this and that... okay, now that the show has lost all momentum because I've been talking for minutes, let's jump back into this highly important moment I bothered to interrupt." I like your insight, I like your personality, but let the scene play out and THEN pause to talk between scenes, do your rewinding and share your background. When you don't restrain yourself, all that insight and investment becomes very one note.

Rokkettdog

Yea, what she almost did was incredibly gross, no defending the act itself. However, you must have never gotten black-out drunk before, Alicia. Its not fun. You actually do not remember anything after the fact other than an odd sensation as if you were underwater. Its far beyond feeling buzzed or standard drunk. I guess the best anolog would be similar to sleepwalking, where you are still moving around, maybe even talking, but its like it wasn't actually you...

I am still in a state of catatonic shock from this episode

This one got me. I’m still extremely unhappy after this episode.

RIP Makima and Denji. Guess we gotta find another protagonist next week like we did with Eren.

Oh… it’s that time is it?…

I was shook when I read this. So many people die all at fucking once. High key was left wondering if I should continue reading.

Ivan

Such slow and beautiful shots at start, thinking it was slow and nice episode that might bring some humor. Brought nothing but sadness. Now I wait as a husk for new episode

this episode alone deserves a rewatch with how so many things happened in so little time fr

This one was a really tough watch. I was shaking as well, I got really attached to these flawed beautiful characters. Wonderful video as always

Tl;dr is back! In the series opening, it's a split-second long, but in the theater you can see Makima put the piece of popcorn up to her own lips before feeding it to Denji — because she's his first indirect kiss as revealed in this episode. There are COUNTLESS little subtle nods like that hidden in plain sight all the time in their opening and ending animations. Even though the opening never changes like the endings do, it feels like it evolves the more you can see and understand in it as the series progresses. That's an element of the storytelling that I wanted to focus on, but it requires a little clarification on a couple small nuances first. The Sick/Drunken Night Activities: One detail about Himeno is that the previous episodes also establish that aside from the new rookies, Himeno has basically kissed everybody there when they go out drinking. Himeno has all of her trauma from the losses of her subordinates, so she gets overly affectionate ignoring the professional social context when she drinks. She's being genuine when she's relieved that they didn't do anything, because while she knows that he's a minor rationally, that's an impulse she doesn't have total control over when drunk and she doesn't remember those things either. It's meant to feel weird an uncomfortable, but it's also meant to be an intersection of Himeno's & Denji's trauma habits interplaying with one another. Denji is desperate for experience, Himeno is desperate for affection and comfort. When they're both ill/drunk, they act without thinking, which is why the lolipop is a trigger to get Denji to think about what he's doing and not just slide along impulsively. Japanese Language Relationship Detail: After Denji & Himeno make an alliance, the specific wording Himeno uses says that after their pact they're no longer Senpai & Kouhai (Senior & Junior) but they're FRIENDS. This means that they're not expected to use Keigo (formal language) when speaking to one another, which is exactly the opposite of how Aki corrects Denji & Power for not speaking formally to their seniors at the start of the Eternity Devil encounter. While unlike Aki, Himeno always uses casual speech with her juniors — the respect and authority hierarchy dynamic means that the juniors can't necessarily use it back. This is because the core dynamic of their relationship is still based in formal hierarchy as their relationship is specifically as work colleagues. Denji & Himeno's pact means that they're expected to speak casually to one another, which is important because of the scene that happened before. If they HAD slept together, that would have established a change in their core relationship dynamic. Oftentimes Japanese shows will telegraph a secret relationship between a Senpai & Kouhai character with tiny slips in language formality that sont match their established formal hierarchy. But that didn't happen. However, even while avoiding that — they still establish that close bond of trust in an equal, mutually platonic way where they both understand one another on a personal level even more honestly in helping the other to get with the person they really want. That's why Himeno phrases what she says to Denji the specific way she does, and it carries a lot more weight that's not able to be conveyed in a way that's quite as significant outside of Japanese culture. It builds off of Denji & Himeno being the ones whose cooperation beat the Eternity Devil together, and linking them both together in interconnected traumatic experiences with that and the barf kiss. It's framing the emotional dynamics of traumatic bonding in explicit and normal world circumstances to help that emotion make sense to audiences who don't have that same extreme stress familiarity. Here's where everything gets crazy with the visual and thematic parallels in what happens. Trauma & Inversion with Storytelling: This is why the rest of the episode is a total inversion of the dynamics starting with the Eternity Devil, and then keeps pushing back to the very start of the series. It starts the second it cuts to the Wes Anderson train shot and emphasizes the ambient sounds of the world. • It's JUST humans with guns to start off the disruption, and the cinematography feeds that exact sense of terror happening anywhere, to anyone, at any time. — The Eternity Devil episode started off talking about the history of the Gun Devil, and how they censored gun violence globally from media to suppress it's power. • Makima is the first one who gets assassinated by the people with firearms. — Makima was the one who told Denji she needs him to kill the Gun Devil in exchange for anything he wants. (This is where it starts pushing back in more layers and rolling back further) • In the Ramen shop by the character talking about how Denji can never develop refined taste because he grew up eating trash. — Aki started out as a punk with no manners before Himeno helped to straighten him out. > Denji started out as a punk with no manners and no experience before Aki straightened him out. • Everyone Denji knows in the present is getting killed in the present by people with Firearms …and it's because the Gun Devil wants his heart. — Everyone in this stranger's Yakuza family made a contract with the Zombie Devil, and all got massacred by Chainsaw Man in the first episode because Pochita became Denji's Heart. > The first episode established the Yakuza as a 'necessary evil' against other far more dangerous foreign mafias exploiting Japan. (This is where it starts to emphasize that 'necessary evil' of working with Yakuza, Fiends, or Devils, is always just a matter of perspective depending on who the victims are and if you already believe they're deserving or not). • Denji & Himeno get shot in front of Aki by this person WITH a gun, connected to his greatest fear and also his biggest motivator. — Aki needs Denji beat the Gun Devil and got stabbed to save him against the Eternity Devil that killed his whole family. > The assassin's motivations are personal revenge for Denji murdering his whole Yakuza family. • Power & Aki team up to take on the conflict here and use Aki's Fox Demon to eat him, but it doesn't work and Aki has to use his sword. — Denji & Himeno had to team up to take charge of the conflict against the Eternity Devil, in order to make sure that Aki wouldn't use his sword and burn away his own life. (Now it rolls back a step further in the parallels) • The Blade Man carves out of the Fox Demon and attacks Aki, forcing him to use the Curse Devil and sacrifice some of his life to protect Denji & Himeno who he cares for, because they're trapped and helpless while Power stabilizes Himeno willingly. — Denji had to sacrifice himself to the Eternity Devil in order to save everyone else while Power stabilized Aki begrudgingly, and he carves his way out of the Eternity Devil. > Power ends up being a sacrifice to the Bat Devil when her attempt to rescue Meowy failed, and Denji had to carve him apart. • The Blade Man gets back up and cuts Aki down, and Himeno can't handle the trauma of another of her partners dying, but ESPECIALLY because of what we know from her pact with Denji that she secretly cares about keeping Aki alive even beyond him just being her work partner. Everything she avoided with the Eternity Devil has already happened and she's dying, so she gives up her entirety to the Ghost Devil to beat the Katana Man. — Power was forced to experience the same thing when she tried to save Meowy, because Fiends can't make contracts with Devils so he ate her and her car anyway, forcing Denji to take action against them. > Pochita & Denji couldn't handle the losses of each other, so Denji made a contract to give Pochita his life, but then Pochita gave it back for Denji to experience his dreams and make sure all the Yakuza got killed. • The Ghost Devil is attacking Blade Man to make sure that Aki doesn't die even if it costs Himeno her life, driven by their broken opportunity at love and a dream life together. Ghost is slowly getting the upper hand against this otherwise unstoppable Blade Man. She finally lands the critical hit, but just before finishing him off — it's suddenly all for nothing, because the terrifyingly calm girl summons the Snake Devil, who eats the Ghost Devil to save the Katana Man and then vanishes. — The Leech Devil was attacking Chainsaw Man because he just killed her boyfriend the Bat Devil and was driven by their broken opportunity at love and a dream life together. The Leech Devil was slowly getting the upper hand at the otherwise unstoppable Chainsaw Man. She finally lands the critical hit, but just before finishing him off — it's suddenly all for nothing, because the terrifyingly calm Aki summons the Fox Devil, who eats the Leech Devil to save Chainsaw Man and then vanishes. • Himeno died so that the Gun Devil could take Denji's Heart. — The Leech Devil died so that Denji could fondle Power's boobs. …which one of those scenarios is a necessary evil, and which one of those was wrong? Trauma Storytelling: Because Japanese history is heavily defined by brutal civil war, there's a perspective on conflict that holds lasting trauma — it's when both sides are just, but one side HAS to lose. That's why trauma is always just about your understanding of the CONTEXT of what happened. It isn't the action itself that's traumatic, but that messes with your survival brain really hard. That's why the victims of damage from trauma get more easily locked into one perspective as always being correct, and often can't easily distinguish nuances, because everything similar all just feels like that same extreme intensity. That's why the Yakuza assassin & Blade Man mention Denji's unrefined taste in ramen meaning he'll never know what something good actually tastes like because he can't distinguish the difference. …but at the same time he isn't capable of recognizing the context that his own perspective of his Yakuza grandfather as a kind man is just as biased in the exact same way by being spoiled. The difference is that his refined taste in ramen makes him miserable, whereas Denji managed to delight in even the most simple things. However the more context and experience of difficulties Denji has, the more he knows he doesn't know — like whether or not to sleep with Himeno. The series focused on a mirror of traumas which can create totally opposite effects. That's why the series makes a point of repeating the exact same scenarios, and uses visuals and cinematography, to help push those experiences solely within the delivery of the narrative itself and doesn't expect the audience to know those details, but it gives them to you passively. Every new piece of the story VERY carefully uses the components and details established previously in creating every single step and progression. It does it thematically, and visually in a way that's just SO incredible. And that's why this episode hits SO HARD. It starts out super slowly FORCING you to focus on context of Denji possibly having sex with Himeno. Then the entirety of the series blitzes backwards through parallels to everything that's happened in a complete overlapping blur at breakneck speed. You have no time to react or digest what's going on at all… because that's how trauma hits and why it's so overwhelming. You can't process what's going on — but you have seconds to make those choices, and they're always simple things like of Denji is gonna kiss a girl or not. It's why he starts saying one thing and then changes his mind all the time. He's trying to learn as he's experiencing that. That's why Denji is the lens that we are everything through, and how he's learning what his traumas are and what contexts exist. He's trying to understand what it all means, and handle it psychologically in a world that's increasingly more overwhelming. The way that they translate themes that are more culturally Japanese like the formal language tied to hierarchal relationship dynamics, and emphasize more universal, basic human themes with the use of very specific cinematic language to communicate those nuances more directly is why I love leaving these comments for ya and learning about how those shots and themes are implemented. Hope that you & the dog are doin' well!

I hope to Christ this whole episode is Trauma Devil or some shit because I am not ok.

Joey Cat

One of the hardest and most shocking episodes I've ever watched, holy shit

Joey Cat

Good thing you've got such a sweet dog for moral support

Joey Faria

The way I see it, Denji is being forced to fight devils or be executed. That is much worse than some intimacy if its consensual. I don't understand why some people are fine with Denji being forced into a situations where he could lose his life but find the scene with Himeno to be too far. From ep1 he had to sell his own body parts just to survive.

Holy shit, my idea got a shoutout, my brain feels so pretty right now 🤣

The thing you thought was Denji's pull cord is actually the piece of the Gun Devil that Aki keeps around his neck, I think.

Hope I'm not late to the party but another thing I caught was Makima's indirect kiss might be the same as Hemino's indirect kiss of the cigarette with Aki

I think the Himeno/Denji situation is supposed to make you uncomfortable, for sure. Tatsuki Fujimoto's characters are often flawed in ways that aren't always palatable.
