Good morning everyone and welcome back to 'The Bakery Bears Advent Calendar 2024'

As we approached this year's 'Advent Calendar', Dan wrote about one of the most infamous events of his childhood. It was Christmas Eve 1983 when the legend of Terrington Bank was born. Today Dan heads back to the spot where it all happened, for the first time in 41 years!

Join Dan this morning as he:

  • Opens ‘Day Twelve’ of our ‘Advent Calendar’

  • Welcome you back to ‘The Bakery Bears Advent Calendar 2024’ and introduces todays adventure

  • Tells you the story of ‘The Legend of Terrington Bank’ which you can read more about in Issue 52 of Knitability https://bakerybears.com/knitability/

  • Finds the exact spot his family parked on the 31st December 1983

  • Takes a walk along ‘Terrington Bank’ and looks up the slope which his Mum sledged down in 1983

  • Shares some memories from Christmases passed

Thank you so much for watching and we'll see you tomorrow as Kay shows you how to complete your first festive pattern of Christmas 2024.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Well that was quite the adventure for your Mum, Dan! I have a similar memory of my brother sledging into a lake in a park in Tunbridge Wells, where we lived at the time! That also could have ended in disaster! I don't think he laughed, he was too cold and soaking wet!

Oh I've been looking forward to this one, and it didn't disappoint! What an incredibly beautiful spot! So picturesque... and looking so lovely and crisp in the misty, wintery weather. ✨ And your Mum.... My Goodnesss!!!! How brave was she!!!! She must have really flown like the wind! And with one lovely, wintery, advent walk... the Legend of Terrington Bank lives on!

Well the mystery for me has been solved that sledging is like sledding. Beautiful country. I can't imagine going down that steep hill. I would have enjoyed seeing Dan's mother's reaction to the video. When I was in kindergarten we moved to 19 acres in the country that had a steep driveway facing North. Every winter it would either get iced over or packed with snow and my folks would have to park at the bottom on the road. That is when we would get out our Flexible Flyer sleds and sled with my parents. Mom would then warm up hot chocolate on the stove for us to enjoy. Many Sunday afternoons neighbors and friends would also come over to sled too. The home place has now been sold as my parents are 90 and 87 and live around the corner on a flat property.

Nana Wendy, I am impressed! You are far braver than I! Thanks for showing us this special spot Dan, I can totally imagine what it would have been like that snowy day.

What a beautiful place for a saunter. What a tale of an adventure.

I love that your Mom is a sledding legend! ❄️ 🤍 ❄️ Thank you for taking us there and sharing such a wonderful memory! We had a steep hill with a creek at the bottom that didn’t always freeze, so the bravest sledders steered towards the tiny bridge across the creek that wasn’t much wider than the sleds and if they missed it, they ended up wet and cold in the creek! I always lost my nerve and veered away from the tiny bridge and flipped myself into the snow instead!

I guess your mum didn’t see the trees and water below that hill?! It is a beautiful area. Hard to find a good sledding spot without any of the hazards that may go along.
