I was literally just telling my sister I couldn't wait for this to drop today and the notification came in! Thanks Josh, perfect timing😂👽

thebeefmaster

Now you know the truth, too. One of the best series ever.

Marcus BlueSky

"We want more, we want more,...". Great episode, great reaction. When a while back you announced you would do a trial batch incl. ep13, I was glad and hoped this one could turn you to watch the rest of the series, too. Fast forward to today, we know what the outcome was :) THank you for picking up the series. Two things: 1. was this ep the last kick to make your decision. maybe along with ep 4? 2. I am sorry for you, Josh. My condolences. I can fully understand that it was probably tough to watch (I saw your opening note in the beginning of your cinematic trailer for this ep).

Ondrej K

Dad scene genuinely gave me chills.

So, the tag here states "Thank you all for your interest and support. The X-Files WILL return in January! We're watching it all!" I want to believe, but I've been deceived before... I'm afraid to believe ;) Super episode, very creepy, Brad Douriff nails his performance, and a great switch between Mulder and Scully's outlook on the case. Gillian Anderson is particularly good in this episode. It would seem you both really enjoyed this episode, great to see! The standards for season one have been generally high and we're only half way through it. Well, if it's not a government conspiracy, and you are returning to The X Files to watch it all, I look forward to rejoining you in the new year. Hope you both have a good break and a great Christmas!

Target Audience

Things were pointing toward us continuing the show at the very least through the end of the season, and then this episode sealed the decision to watch it all. Thank you for your condolences.

Ryan

Scully shouldn't run toward the devil and Mulder shouldn't run toward the cross. If this were high school, I'll bet I could get a solid five-paragraph essay out of that. Otherwise, I'm glad you liked it and I agree with your thoughts. This has the feel of the best character-focused episodes of Star Trek, where there's a sci-fi plot and it's good, but it's used in the service of learning more about what makes our main characters tick. Great, great stuff.

This is not only one of the early all-time great X-Files episodes -- it was the first episode where it was like, "Oh, okay, Gillian Anderson is a fucking ACTOR." This woman is a powerhouse. It's even more mind-blowing when you realize she was only like 26 years old in Season One. Whoever cast the X-Files pulled off one of the greatest pairings in television history. Their chemistry is off the charts. It's a real pleasure watching you guys fall in love with the show week to week. You won't regret it. It's a ride equal to TNG, and a worthy successor to your reactions. Can't wait for more.

Gillian was actually 24. She lied about her age to get the role. She actually thought she was really bad when she started the series and kept waiting to get the call that they where going to replace her. Fortunately that never happened, Gillian is an amazing actress who can do both dramatic and comedic moments just as well.

Sam Langanke

When the most british show "The Crown" casts for the most british female politician Margaret Thatcher Gillian Anderson you know she has to be amazing in this role. And she is.

KevinH

Subtle callback: In the early scene in Mulder's office, hanging on the coat rack is Max's NICAP baseball cap from "Fallen Angel."

John A

This is the best of the fist 13 episodes to me. Not going to say if best of season hahaha Great story and great acting. I know you are going to continue with the season. Brad Dourif told me and I believe hahaha

Alan Thompson

You should watch Exorcist 3 as part of the horror gallery, with Brad Dourif playing almost the same role.

MrDeadstu

"We're watching it all!" I am so happy right now.... "I tore this off my New York Knicks T-shirt. It has nothing to do with the crime." Mulder being a badass. a bit of trivia : The scene when Scully's father appears as the silent apparition, the actor Don Davis was reciting the Lord's Prayer. Creepy.

Keith S

If you're doing all of X-Files. Does that include the movie?

THE LORE!!!

Josh, you probably recognize Dourif from The Lord of the Rings, since everyone has seen that. He was Grima Wormtongue. Please, more X Files!

Scribe31oz

I loved Exorcists III. It is one of my top three horrors.

tyranusfan

That's a great movie that is sadly dismissed because of it being a "3." (People don't realize that it was never meant to be a sequel.)

Sherman Lin

Thanks for deciding to continue the rest of the season....its going to get better and better

PianoDean

I subbed for X-Files...glad it's gonna keep goin

HS

I did not remember that Chucky was in the X-Files. I remember this episode being one of the "boring" ones when I first watched as a kid cuz it had a lot of talking. Can't wait to rewatch this with you guys as an adult.

Martin Wilson

Great to hear the reactions will continue guys,I’m sure Alex would be rather shocked to know he has seen David Nutters work before as he directed some episodes of Game of Thrones including the red wedding episode….

Keith S

Okay, asked and answered.

Jonathan Llyr

Capital decision boys! I’m here for all of it.

Paul

Phenomenal episode indeed, the first one that stands out far beyond the rest (Ice being the closest second but in a different vibe). Gillian Anderson is a fantastic actress that hasn't had that many moments yet to truly shine until she confronted Wormtongue in his cell. I felt her fury burning through the screen. Also goes to show how much she cares and respect Mulder. Finally yes, there are MANY more episodes that rival this caliber of story (of varying styles).

BN13

The "afraid to believe" thing is actually pretty common. I've heard from a lot of people who were hardcore atheists who later had an NDE or other spiritual experience say that the reason why they were so adamant against anything paranormal or spiritual was because they were afraid of it being true because they didn't understand it.

Paul

I think it's a classic fear of the unknown. What you don't know can harm you, surprise you, twist you in ways you can't imagine. There's no control over that void of doubt. Others view the unknown as a source of excitement; there's mystery and wonder out there...

River Acheron

I don't like jump-scares, but even I have to admit that Exorcist 3 has the best jump-scare in the history of horror (the hospital scene....if you know, you know lol)

Magnatempus

I'm happy you guys made it to this episode. A preview of just how incredible this show is.

Skye Maidstone

Gillian is so fantastic in this one as is the guest actor Brad. Damn fine episode all around.

WB

When I watched x files I was a little young for these kind of episodes to land which is part of why I wanted to rewatch the series. It really is a stand out show.

Loot Narsbaar

So glad Scully left this guy to die alone

Jonathan Llyr

It’s been mentioned a few times in these comments but yeah - if you like Dourif do yourselves a huge favour and watch Exorcist III - the most disturbing and frightening film I’ve ever seen.

David Kirk

The wild truth about David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson is that David does not believe in UFOs and Gillian is actually a believer in UFOs, opposite of the show! So glad you guys are reviewing this show. When it was on the air, EVERYBODY was watching it and Chris Carter was considered a genius.

Guy Gordon

I joined for The X-Files (but might go back and go through Trek stuff eventually). Will be happy to stick with The X-FIles for yet another viewing for me.

Tim Nikiforovs

With the caveat that I haven't seen S1 in a very long time, Beyond the Sea does stand out in my mind as probably the most impactful of S1. Not even half a season in and they hit Scully with the death of a parent. Anderson does a phenomenal job taking the lead on this one, and I love how they flipped the script on the whole belief/skepticism dynamic between her and Mulder. Dourif does a great job as well, but then he always does. Glad to hear you're continuing with the series. X Files is one of those shows that has a very wide range in the stories it tells. Some eps are straight up comedies, others compelling mysteries, others are straight out of the horror genre, and some you wonder how they ever got them aired. There's definitely something here for everyone.

Todd

This one has always been a banger. Really feels like they were going for a mixture of Silence of the Lambs and Exorcist III and HAD to be inspired by Exorcist III to cast Brad Dourif. If you guys haven't watched Exorcist III it's a MUST watch especially after this episode. It's like this performance but amped up 10x.

Brandon Blume

Brad was awesome in Lord of the Rings too.

Bantha Fodder

I’m getting caught up! Love reliving these episodes with you. Haven’t seen them since their original airings.

StonyD

Don Davis aka General George S. Hammond from Stargate SG1. He rocked. RIP
