The finale is not perfect, but it holds a special place in my heart just for being the end of an era. TNG ended just weeks before I graduated high school, and my two closest friends and I discussed every episode on Monday morning. The show ended as we were about to go our separate ways.

Alexander McKechnie

Had a big viewing party for this in 94! Took me a while to realize that the temporal paradox wasn't actually caused by the same ship in three timelines, but I still love it. Perfect bookend to this series!

Kaleigh

A+ from me. A creative finale and I think the best decision was to loop back to the first episode. Such a great love-letter to the show. My biggest complaint is the future relationships of the crew being so shitty. Why did they have to make everyone so angsty in the future?

JMB

Yep! I use to buy a book called the Nitpicker's Guide (for TNG, think the author had others, too) and it wasn't listed. I always wanted to write in and let him know b/c I think I noticed it on first viewing.

tyranusfan

I loved the Nitpicker's Guides

There’s no need to really say anything, but I will: A perfect wrap for the series, back then. S-tier! (Congrats on making it this far, J&A!) Luckily it’s not a wrap on Star Trek. More good things to come.. I’ll say no more.

Evan Guthrie

It's very good, but I don't think it quite hits S-tier. There are no huge moments that get me like in the most memorable episodes.

Monarch Black

I don't think it was the best episode of the series, but it is a GREAT finale.

Rick McCombs

There's a lot of problems with this episode. It's been years since I watched it until I rewatched it last night. For one thing, "Warp 13" I'm s mentioned twice.

Rocky hate Mark

All series finales should be this good. Eat it GoT!

Herby Ragan

My favorite TNG story, with a mini nit-pick (but still an S-tier). There is a scene between Q and Picard (primordial soup) that is a direct rip-off from the Doctor Who story "City of Death" (a 4th Doctor story written by Douglas Adams). As a Whovian i was rather upset when that scene appeared. But "All Good Things" is such a great episode I can now let it slide.

Jovet

(Classic) Doctor Who > Star Trek

Jovet

💯

Jovet

The end of my favorite Star Trek series. And the end of an era, since I don't care for the Next Gen films very much.

Evan Guthrie

Also another plot hole I hate, the anomaly supposedly moves backward through time, so there's no reason it shouldn't have been there at first in the future and then shown up AFTER they scan for it.

Evan Guthrie

Man, that's crazy to think about. Your middle and high school formative years perfectly aligned with the release of TNG. To you it must have felt like a constant in life. It wasn't just a show ending, but an entire chapter of your life. You must have some crazy nostalgia for TNG.

Jeffrey P

A-tier for me. It's not a "Now THIS is Star Trek" episode but it does what it's supposed to do and in a way that's more satisfying than most series finales from the 90s

tyranusfan

Yup, 6th grade to 12th grade. I still remember our reactions to certain episodes, and even certain trailers for the next week. (DS9 and Babylon 5 similarly covered my time in college. Funny how things line up.)

Nolan

I assume it hour glasses through the continuum.

Brian Salas

I want so badly for it to be an S-tier episode. But I can't give it more than a solid B+ or A-. 3 enterprises didn't shoot the beam. One was the Pasteur... It's such a glaring mistake that I cannot believe it made it to screen. The poker game at the end saves it. Ok I'm moving my vote to A-. But you guys get S+ for your takes and reactions.

Loot Narsbaar

It's not a plot hole, they caused a time travel paradox. It was established in Parallels there are infinite universes. Therefore when the barrier gets ruptured the Pasteur forms a new timeline reality that is different from the one we first saw.

M J D

I can't rate it an "S" but an "A". Remember seeing it that night and still feeling there needed to be a couple more lines (present timeline between Worf/Riker), They at least gave Troi some logic missing from "Farpoint" first go round. DeLancie as "old" Q still gives me laugh. J&A have a great well deserved holiday, many more Treks to come!

Loot Narsbaar

Who gives a shit if someone said Enterprise when they meant to say Pasteur. Confusing names is part of the brain rot of getting old and it happens to everyone!

Anarchist Accountant

I don't understand the love this finale gets. Yeah, it covers a number of personal timelines fir the characters, but the guest star contrived problem origin and the overall dependence on a technobabble cause/solution don't allow it to be top tier. More fandom hype than quality. B-tier finale for me.

D Jammers

Doesn't Data say "...it's as if all 3 beams originated from the enterprise" he didn't know, he's theorizing because it's the same amplitude or whatever

Brian Salas

Probably but there's another reference to it from Picard's perspective and even the writers later said they'd hoped no one would notice lol. I still love the episode but it's never been my favorite of the finales. Won't say with one to avoid possible spoiler talk for other series.

D Jammers

Why? do you think you'll turn into a lizard if you go past warp 10?

John

I agree with you. Like with many, if not most shows, the finale is a mediocre episode. It manages not to piss everyone off at least, but it does this by being even more safe and boring than standard fare. Solidly C-Tier for me.

Spencer Loften

I think it has to do with what John is saying. It managed to not be complete shit and everyone fell in love with it. For me it's the most "this is fine" episode in the entire show. I like the final scene but the episode itself never did much for me.

GrimDark Narrator

Its not a flawless episode, and there's certainly tighter ones in TNG, even among two-parters, but for a finale, this one feels very satisfying in my opinion. It might also be the best Star Trek series finale out of all of them. I'd rate it an S for nostalgia value looking back at 7 years with this crew. Or an A if you're feeling nitpicky.

Numinous2019

A. Along with 'Lower Decks' this is the best episode of S7 (or at least the most entertaining). It's an A, not an S i.m.o., because of some of the writing decisions. And it proves (or at least reminds us) that Stewart is the best actor in that cast by some distance. He doesn't over-act. Everything he does is measured to hit the right note.

Ken R

This finale was okay, but its no S tier, and it isnt even the best series finale. It's definitely one of the stronger episodes, I gave it a B

Cooper Vision

Were they serious when they said they'd seen TNG before? I did get that vibe often during the reactions! Now I dunno to trust them about not seeing DS9! Fun reaction, totes emosh, episode shoulda been a movie yada yada yada, it's been a fun trek. Thanks lads.

Jon Miller

It's perfect. Easy S.

Joe Concepts

Nah, they never saw it. As a big TNG fan I followed them the whole way through the series. They were properly surprised about things, and have been very honest if they were spoiled about anything. I've seen plenty reactors I think are being fake and they aren't.

Joe Concepts

A for me. I really enjoy it, but there are better episodes. And I feel like it holds back a little because they already know movies are on the way. Saving things for later.

Better Watch Trek

I love the finale. Sure, objective speaking there are better episodes, but my personal experience, the feeling I have when I rewatch it... 'S' and in my personal top 3 of All Star Trek.

TinMan_7B9

a most... Stimulating experience. So, Seven Studs Scene, wildly Succesful, and the Sky was the limit! Goodbye TNG. An (almost) perfect end to the (almost) perfect series that got me into Star Trek.

Rick McCombs

Why would they change the the warp scale again? Why did they add a third nacelle to the Enterprise?

BurnMaker

VERY stimulating

The_Dahar_Master

The conversation at the end with Q. When Picard asks him whats he's trying to tell him?. I always thought that Q was going to tell him to "Boldly Go where no one has gone before."

Loot Narsbaar

Because it's the Q-verse. It's a wink to the fans because ships don't have 3 nacelles and don't go past warp 10. There havin' fun because its the finale and that future doesn't count. The whole point of this finale is to go on a grand fun adventure. It's meant to be fun!

Ryan Elton

I watch your video reactions every day, multiple times a day since you guys started watching in season 1 of TNG. I am very curious what you guys think in great detail in regards to the visual aspects of the first Next Generation film. This is a show I grew up with since 1993 when I was 5, and is what really got me into Star Trek post 1980. I also hope you guys like and appreciate what DS9 is becoming, as I also grew up with and DEEPLY love this series. There is something unique and special about all of the series, respectively, but DS9 is the one I Love the most!

Jim J

This is a solid A-tier episode for me. I don't know why Q was so impressed with the Picard finally figuring out the paradox. I thought it was obvious all along why the thing was bigger in the past Other than that, I loved it . The final poker game scene made it all worthwhile.

Brandon Francey

It wasn't Picard figuring out that specific paradox. It was Picard opening his mind to new possibilities. He considered that time isn't linear. That you can experience a consequence of an action you haven't taken yet or multiple contradictory statements can be true at the same time. It wasn't about figuring out the puzzle, it was about changing the way Picard thought and what he might think about next.

Alexander McKechnie

Yeah, since it moves back in time, it should have been there when the Pastuer arrived and they (or later Enterprise) scans with the inverse tachyon pulse and the anomaly shrinks and disappears after a few seconds. The details of this anomaly business are the only flaw I see with this otherwise excellent episode!

KingPin124

It’s a solid finale, but it’s not an “S-Tier”.

Jim J

I fail to see the difference.

Donjeur

You’re wrong

Donjeur

Absolutely S all day long. Watching it for the first time when it aired was a joy. Count how many times you yelled in delight through the 90 mins

Brett O

A tier for me as it's mostly a satisfying ending to the series. One thing always bugged me about the episode though... if the anomaly is an eruption of anti time then the Pasteur completing the Tachyon scan would be the start of it with it getting larger into the past, so when the future Enterprise goes back there shouldn't be anything there.

Mikaby

It's a good episode and finale. It succeeds primarily by being character-based, showing the characters we love at different points in time and exploring their development and the development of their relationships. With that said, while it is interesting that they caused the anomaly, and that it's growing backwards into the past, it ultimately falls a bit flat with me as the central problem to overcome. There just isn't a big conflict or anything to really sink your teeth into. It just feels like it needed a little something more. Added to that, the earliest timeline Picard acting crazy from the crew's perspective makes that plotline feel a bit weak. Maybe I just have a low tolerance for people acting crazy, but it's hard for me to enjoy people going along with an apparent madman, when they obviously shouldn't, going by the information they have available. So in the end, this episode gets a B+ from me. It's enjoyable and succeeds at what it needed to succeed at, and that's no mean task for a finale.

Mikaby

It's really about exploring the characters in the different points in time. The central plot of the anomaly is really just an excuse to set things in motion. It would definitely have been better if there was more to sink our teeth into with the anomaly... more of a conflict we could get invested in, but that's not where the focus is. In the end, I gave it a B grade as well, but a B+, and I feel like I look at it more positively than you do. I can understand why someone would give this an A, and maybe even an S if they're just drunk on love for the show, though it definitely doesn't have S-tier writing.

Mikaby

Neither the TNG nor the TOS movies feel that much like the shows to me, and it's to their detriment. Even a good movie like The Wrath of Khan doesn't vibe with me the same way the TOS series did.

Mikaby

"(Classic) Doctor Who > Star Trek" I love classic Who, but some eras of it are a lot less great than others. If we can pick and choose our stories, it's pretty hard to top though.
