Oh, wow! Had to keep it 1 second under 2 hours 😂. Gonna have to block some time for this one.

David Wayne Fox

This is my morning coffee/breakfast watch.

Joe J

I never knew I needed this....guess I did, lol.

Matchstick Jose

Rob Bowman was widely considered the best TNG director during the first two seasons. Fans were bummed when he left. I think Frakes is definitely the GOAT TNG director in terms of the entire series.

misti-step

excited to see how much my list skewed the results 😅😅

penoyer79

I'm shocked Alex left The Wounded off his list. I would have made my list but i'm not nearly as familiar with this series as i am with TOS. I know that show back, front and sideways well enough to give a all 79 ranking actually. This one, too many episodes to sort through. there's episodes i havent watched in 30 years and have no desire to revisit.

Collin Freeman

I was surprised The Big Goodbye didn't make Alex's list, either

Narnman

1hr3min52s Our guy David Warner from Star Trek 5 too

Numinous2019

Weinrich Kolbe? No disrespect to Frakes, who was a very talented director for ST.

Numinous2019

Oh Lord!....choosing a top TNG episode is extremely difficult. I would choose Chain of Command Part 2. My reasons are that (1) Picard's torture is unusual in ST as something that re-motivated me re human rights work. It went beyond the typical ST engagement into a direct call for action to the audience, because it reflected real world cases. (2) Jellico was a much needed 'spanner in the works' of the unrealistically harmonious Enterprise crew. He was both correct and wrong headed in how he went about things. So that subplot was refreshing and unique.

Matchstick Jose

It does raise a point about how we judge Star Trek directors, since so much about how an episode is received comes down to how good the script is. So it can really just be luck of the draw. Probably not much Frakes could have done with, say, Imaginary Friend or Force of Nature to elevate them.

Ian Meyers

Favorite Target Audience moment is now Alex talking about how much he loves the character Worf, so much so that he is breaking down over it, then Josh just says "Patron number two pick...the Best of Both Worlds", shit made me do a spit take. Great list guys, certainly gonna have to bust out ye olde VHS tapes and watch some of these. Ronald Moore email teased at the end??

David Wayne Fox

Guys, my own personal list may not have lined up as much with yours.. mine was much more "Trekky" than both of yours (Though I aligned a bit more with Alex). But the fact that your top episodes were the most "human" episodes and yes, my crying right along with you has allowed me to look at my favorite TV series of all time through a new lens and appreciate it all the much more for the things that I probably placed more in the background initially. Your choices show the kind of people that you both are, and make me want to keep reevaluating and checking in with who I am as I head into my senior years. I do like DS9 a great deal, and Voyager perhaps a little bit more, but I think the greatest tribute to you is that I plan on watching Enterprise which I have never seen just so I can enjoy your reactions. So there, I said it.

Narnman

My fave reaction from the both of you for this series of star trek is from Lessons. In fact right now I'm gonna head over to youtube to rewatch this emotionally filled episode

Paul

What's in that email?! Or, who was it from... I agree with your point that a good ending which makes you think can wrap up an episode in a perfect bow, elevating a mediocre one or bringing an already solid episode into the peak echelons of what TV can provide. Make me feel, or make me think! Or both... (Alex especially wants to feel sorrow and trauma) Josh's Data's Day journey is hilarious. Goes to show how initial reactions are not always solidified in cement. The more you rewatch the show, the more opinions are in flux. I'd be curious if you guys redo your top 26 episodes in a decade from now, after you've done a full rewatch multiple times on your own (you will, it's inevitable) how similar the lists would be. I think the best glazing you both do to a strong episode but one that the fandom generally dismisses as just okay, is The Quality of Life. It's absolutely a sequel to Measure of a Man, without an epic Picard speech, but it wasn't needed this time. It was about Data's evolution, and standing up for himself and, in a sense, his own kind. Beautiful. And of course, Lessons. Always liked the episode, but I wasn't as emotionally bonded with the love story until watching it with you guys. And how it deepens the weight of command that Picard feels when he sees Nella on the transporter and alive... he realizes in that moment God, she's alive, but I can't do this again. NEVER again. So thanks for making me even more invested in my favorite franchise of all time. It's very clear Alex hates being disrespected, as in, when the writing or direction makes things obvious because they don't trust the audience. Doesn't affect me as much as it does him, but I fully get it. Trust your audience, especially of a sci-fi show, we tend to be more perceptive and brighter than the average Joe. I think Remember Me is proof positive that you both absolutely love science fiction, when it interacts / affects characters you love. Or Alex getting crap because of "the plot" yet has The Best of Both Worlds in his top 10, an extremely plot-focused storyline, and is of intensely grand scale, literally hivemind hyper aliens coming to wipe out humanity. Just connect storylines with people we love, it's that simple (and execution lol) I fully agree that Picard is that virtuous principled man, not in a utilitarian sense, and an episode which tries to point out in secondary effect the dangers of utilitarianism (it can lead to the shredding of individual liberties for instance, "for the greater good")... any episode that gets me thinking along those lines is not just good, but literally important for all of humanity to watch. Everyone's lists: Alex: 26- Disaster 25- The Offspring 24- The Quality of Life 23- The Drumhead 22- Night Terrors 21- Data's Day 20- The Defector / Inner Light Battle to the Death (tie) 19- Clues 18- Relics 17- Half a Life 16- Yesterday's Enterprise 15- Lower Decks 14- Inheritance 13- Family 12- Darmok 11- Ship in a Bottle 10- Chain of Command 9- Remember Me 8- Best of Both Worlds 7- Measure of a Man 6-I, Borg 5- Lessons 4- Tapestry 3- Second Chances 2- Redemption (specifically 2) 1- Transfigurations! (Lol The Bonding) Josh: 26- Heart of Glory 25- Sarek 24- The Mind's Eye 23- Inheritance 22- Redemption 21- The Drumhead 20- The Wounded 19- The Quality of Life 18- Yesterday's Enterprise 17- Reunion 16- Genesis 15- The Enemy 14- Ethics 13- Chain of Command 12- The Bonding 11- The Emissary 10- Measure of a Man 9- Future Imperfect 8- The Defector 7- Tapestry 6- Second Chances 5- Remember Me 4- I, Borg 3- The Offspring 2- Lower Decks 1- Devil's Due! (Lol no, Lessons) Patrons: 26- The First Duty 25- Relics 24- The Pegasus 23- Sins of the father 22- Sarek 21- Remember me 20- Darmok (Tie but Josh slashed) 19- Lessons (Tie but edged) 18- I, Borg 17- Reunion 16- Redemption 15- The Drumhead 14- The Wounded 13- The Defector 12- Q Who 11- Cause & Effect 10- The Offspring 9- Family 8- All Good Things 7- Chain of Command 6- The Inner Light 5- Tapestry 4- Lower Decks (Another Tie) 3- Measure of a Man (Another tie) 2- Best of Both Worlds (Yes it's that guy, Amos) 1- Yesterday's Enterprise (Also that guy, because of Prune juice)

Banes

Holy smokes, this became a beautiful conversation about the show. I hope Alex - and Josh too - get to meet Ron Moore at some point. I don't know how easy or hard that is to do. Edit: Oh shit! is that who the email's from???

John M.

Great vid! By my count that's 41 episodes. For me 18 S's, 12 A's, 4 B's, 6 C's and one E. Think I'll rewatch the lower ones to see if I change my mind.

Ken R

I am disappointed that First Duty didn't make anybody's list. It is just a solid story from start to finish. That was in my top 5 I think.

Collin Freeman

In the Target Audience, no one is alone.

Paul

It's a genuine pleasure reliving this masterpiece franchise of TV with the both of you, now onward we go deeper into DS9 and soon, Voyager!

Paul

I think it's very solid indeed but wouldn't be in my top 26, purely because there are so many other stellar episodes. Even a top 100 would still be "These are all either life changing episodes or at least quite good and entertaining).

Collin Freeman

I had it at number 21 on my list, but it did make it. Really, after my top 3, the rest of the list is just the list - it's all fluid. Too many good episodes to make even a solid 26. Could be a top 100 list - there are that many good episodes.

D Jammers

The email is from Gabriel Damon

Evan Guthrie

It's way up there in mine. Absolute masterpiece of an episode.

Captain Proton

Good lists! Seeing Alex so open about his emotional attachment to the show just made me appreciate it even more. To me it's feelings like this that make art worthwhile.

KingPin124

Someone Josh managed to list more episodes than the show has episodes 😂.

Raphael Gaytan

I don’t think you pissed any of us off with your episode ranking, guys. After the number of episodes we’ve all watched along with you, we’re all aware by now that what constitutes your favorites don’t always line up with the fanbase. But I gotta tell you from the heart…I really love watching you guys and your love for TNG! Seeing you both get so emotional over your favorite character moments from the show 100% mirrors how I’ve always felt. Our top episodes lists may differ, but we all share a love for those moments and for what this series and these characters mean to us! Long live The Next Generation and may you guys continue to prosper on your Star Trek journey! 🖖

KingPin124

What happened at the end!?!?! 🤯 Hey guys, I just want to say (and I’m sure that everyone would agree) that I respect both of you for putting yourselves out there. You lay out your thoughts on the table and wear your emotions for all to see. Throwing yourself out there to the mercy of the internet can’t aways be easy, but I’m glad to see that you guys can with the support of everyone here.

Naglfarius

I would LOVE a Talk from you about your favourite Scenes. Best 10/26 best Scenes of TNG? Extra points, if the muted Scene is played while you talk about it. :)

Evan Guthrie

Heck yeah survivors mentioned! (because it was my #1 lol)

Paul

I like this idea.

Paul

Their sincerity no matter the reaction is very rare in this space.

Evan Guthrie

Josh, I appreciate how you discussed I, Borg. I HATE that episode, because it feels like we're supposed to side with Picard with all his moral purity. But the discussion of right vs wrong is great, and the writers even make me feel sympathy for Hugh. I hate the episode, but I still give it an A tier.

Nolan

Alex getting weepy while talking about Worf "and his friends, here, on the Enterprise!" 🙃

Evan Guthrie

Okay, we need to speculate about this email. I'm thinking a TNG actor/writer/director reached out to them. Or maybe Josh and his wife had a kid and they named him/her after someone in TNG.

Naglfarius

What i really love about the Journey with you is the different prespective on Episodes. I first watched TNG as a Teenager/ young Adult, and now i am 37 and finished with you my rewatch. The favourites are still great. (Inner Light ist still safe on Number One) But your favourite Episodes are now also some of mine. (Lessons is Number 2, which in my first Watch was not even close on the List.) So thank you for the Journey so far.

Brent Morris

After watching this I have to redo all my list definitely the best episode is a tie between emergence and shades of grey with Times Arrow part 1 close behind

KingPin124

I am both shocked and appalled that Rascals did not make either Top 10!

Captkirc

Worf kinda tapped out in Ethics just like John Cena

Jack Molitor

I didn’t watch the whole thing, all I know is I’m angry at you guys and canceling because of your rankings.

Doctor Pulaski

So I finally got my significant other to watch Star Trek. But what in the entry point? Man Trap? Cage? Encounter at Farpoint? No.., I needed to hook them. I settled on the Duo of The Inner Light & Lessons. It worked perfectly.., the inner light requires virtually no knowledge of the show, just a sci fi plot. And Lessons becomes the cathartic payoff to it, and is amazing for all the reasons you guys mentioned. But another amazing thing about Lessons is it is a wonderful showcase of life on the Enterprise - both slice of life and a serious mission. Everything you need to “get”Starfleet and intro this crew is in Lessons. Highly recommend these two as an entry point for skeptics - and I have to thank TA for helping me appreciate Lessons that much more.

Harry Broos

Great video, but I had Lower Decks #1 on my list man

Target Audience

Ah yes, you did, but you were the only one, and MOAM had several, the tiebreaker stands!

Target Audience

Great point about Lessons having slice of life as well as dangerous Starfleet mission. It is the TRUE Best of Both Worlds!

Jack Molitor

Are we going to get a list of top 10 TA TNG ops? Stubbs Mark Twain Vash (just the TNG episodes) Jack Crusher The biscuits scene from The Chase Rasmussen from A Matter of Time Transfigurations Pulaski Up the Long Ladder …who/what else?

Ross Townsend

Thanks for the journey. My top 26 would have been very different before watching TNG with you guys, because it was my moral guidepost as a kid, and the sci-fi fascinated me, but the way you latched to the emotional bedrock gave me new perspective. I didn't even remember the Bonding existed until Alex made it clear why it should be in everyone's top 10.

Summer

Sorry your top Captain’s holiday wasn’t chosen…..

Joe Concepts

I can see the arguments for some of those "off the list" ones you guys mentioned, but to not have Best of Both Worlds on there seems crazy! And that's really the ONLY one I feel that way about.

Joe Concepts

...but then again, I didn't actually sit down and try ranking them.

Target Audience

If it was a "Top 26 most important episodes" list it would be on there

Kristina Weber

I tried to make my own list and realized there are more than 26 bangers. Like, 26 wasn't enough to fit every episode which felt essential to include. Mark of an excellent show 🌟

Loot Narsbaar

Back in 94 there was a voted on by the fans top 5 episode marathon that aired before the finale. The episodes were 5) Relics, 4) Inner Light, 3) Yesterday's Enterprise, 2&1) BoBW

JRandolph

I don't think I agree with the guys on even half of these, which pretty much speaks to why Star Trek is so great.

Better Watch Trek

nearly 2 hours? Ahhhhhh, I hope I'll find the time tomorrow to watch it! However: Whatever you picked as best 26 episodes, I'm sure it's stellar television and a great example how awesome TNG is and believe me, back in the 90s on first TV brodacast TNG elevated Television to a whole new level. Does it matter if Lower Decks, Inner Light, Best of Both Worlds is on first place? No, it doesn't! In the end, if you have to pick a new tv show or rewatch TNG, it's always better to choose Trek! ;) I followed you after somewhere of season 4 TNG, joined patreon with season 6 and looking forward to the next area of Star Trek: The DS9/VOY years! enjoy!

Aaron Wells

Yes. Thank you for the summary post. Agree completely about Lessons. I was pretty ambivalent about that episode until these guys reacted to it.

Ryan

Preemptive comments before I watch: 1) I've been watching this show since it first aired and my top 26 list changes all the damn time. I refuse to believe anyone has one immutable List to Rule Them All of TNG episodes. The show is just too multifaceted and rewards rewatching too much for that to happen. 2) One of my all-time favorite episodes, Contagion, is objectively crap and would never appear on most people's Top 26. But it's on mine. You gotta call 'em like you see 'em, at least for what speaks to you. More later, I'm sure...

misti-step

the same way that the people on the enterprise feel like our friends, you guys feel like my friends too. its been an amazing journey with tng and im so glad i found the target audience ❤️

Raphael Gaytan

This may be my last chance to say this on a TNG-related list, but the reason why so many of us seem cliched on our Top 10 episodes is because, having watched them as they originally aired, these were the episodes that had a lasting impact. They were MOMENTOUS. The Borg cliffhanger, the return of Tasha in a bad ass time travel episode, Picard living a lifetime on another world and having a family. We absolutely love the character-driven episodes too…but the high-concept ideas are what made the biggest impressions on many of us at the time. One thing I’ve never shared with anyone is that the final funeral scene with Tasha in “Skin of Evil” helped me cope with the death of my father. To this day, when I see that bucolic sky in the holodeck and the music swells as she tells Picard that he was like a father to her…and that he has the heart of an explorer and the soul of a poet…I sob like a child who misses his Dad. I actually had to fight the urge to put “Skin of Evil” in my Top 10 because of what it has meant to me personally. Hahaha, tears are falling as I write this. I’m right there with you, Alex! 😭 Thank you, guys!

startrekiborg

Hey Alex, #4 & 7 were the same for both of us! I mean, we're practically twins!! ;;

Summer

I like Contagion too and even the Royale though I forgot them for my honorable mentions. Contagion one of the early tng attempts at world building

paultardspambot .

So, do you guys know when you're going to start DS9 season 3? After the holidays?

paultardspambot .

are you sure it wasn't top ten? I remember what you're talking about, but I'm pretty sure it was a top ten. I remember Remember Me was on there

Ryan

For me I think your reactions are taking the place of actual new Star Trek episodes. I’m Best of Both Worlds–level geeked to see you get into DS9 S3.

Loot Narsbaar

Maybe my market only got 5 episodes I don’t know

Loot Narsbaar

Maybe we are thinking of different marathons. There’s a memory alpha page which confirms my memory of events!

paultardspambot .

i guess i must be misremembering, because it was definitely right before all good things

Marko

I am with you Alex, I think Trek, not just TNG, but all of it, changed me for the better as well.

BN13

"Tapestry" I get it. I understand wholeheartedly. Not on my list. But you know what is on my list? "Loud as a Whisper." That just shows how diverse everyone's top episodes can be. We all love Star Trek, but experience it in different ways.

Tim Nikiforovs

And I just went through and summarized everyone's lists without realizing you beat me to it. Oh well

Ryan

The auto-subtitles rendering "the Locutus story" as "the little cutest story" is the best mistake they've made so far.

Summer

So did anyone have skin of evil or symbiosis in their top 26….was watching Bunny watch these episodes and was curious

jan

all the feels - thanks Target Audience
