B for the first fifteen minutes. After that it's all set up for a villain story. It's Conspiracy with a weaker conspiracy and an exploding Galaxy class ship in place of a chest worm.

Kaleigh

Upon first watch it’s a disappointing season finale. Upon rewatch it’s when you get super excited for what’s to come.

Summer

Jake and Nog make it an A

Matchstick Jose

I give it a G for Galaxy Class 'sploding.

Daniel Garrett

Eris was cool. And hot. The weird makeup, contacts and body language got my attention.

Matchstick Jose

I feel like the establishment of a Bajoran colony in the Gamma Quadrant should have been its own storyline (or at least a B story) in a previous episode, and not just set up in a few lines in Crossover, to really make us care that it's been wiped out and give that moment more weight.

Religion, Sex, and Politics

It might be a B+/A- on first viewing but from the view of having seen the series as a whole, it’s S-tier. I love it.

Skullman8942

I agree, we should've seen the colony in an episode earlier in the season and we should've seen the Captain and the Odyssey once or twice before this episode too.

TinMan_7B9

Ah, Red Jam! Remember TNG's "The Neutral Zone"? I've heard some people don't like that episode. They want to skip the interesting part focusing on the characters from the 20th century. They just want the plot with the Romulans to arrive. But the meat of that episode is in the conversations with those three people, they make you think. The Romulans are introduced as some kind of new Super-Villain in the final moments, just to create hype for the next Season. I give "The Neutral Zone" an A. I also give "The Jem'Hadar" an A. Are they similar? Maybe, maybe not.

Ken R

Very solid episode, its a B.

Axis 77

I saw this for the first time as a bootleg copy on the big screen at a Star Trek Convention here in Melbourne. VHS taped off the TV and blown up way beyond acceptable resolution, but we the crowd still loved it. I think it’s that experience that makes me overlook the flaws of this episode… I still love it.

Ken R

I had never seen it before and I found that it did interest me in what is too come. It kind of paints the Founders like the Cylons or some other series main villain, and that's a plus in my book. Bajor has faded a little in the background and the show needed/needs a new villain or story to drive the narrative. It was floundering a bit in S2 with waste of time episodes about women in wheelchairs, nervous young visitors, or "comedic" Ferengi junk. Bring on the Founders, and then bring on the founders' Founders if need be.

Kaleigh

I guess what I meant by “disappointing” is that it didn’t really connect to anything set-up in season 2. It really is season 3 episode 0, and you’re right that it introduces a very intriguing threat. I think I agree with the boys that the start of the episode with the camping trip does change very abruptly the the rest of the episode and the real threat of the story. Maybe they could have cut to the chase a bit faster so the pacing felt more steady. I’m trying to remember what I felt when I watched this for the first time. I’m so happy that you, Ken, get to watch these fresh! Enjoy!

Laura Thornley

In a vacuum, its a B tier episode. But on a rewatch for me its A tier. Its hard to explain my reasoning.

tyranusfan

I'm fairly certain this episode ran short. That scene when Sisko and Quark escape and run, run, run through the trees for an awkwardly long time suggests that they needed to pad out the run time a little bit. :) That's my only real complaint. Well, that, and that the Odyssey didn't fire a single photon torpedo...

Spencer Loften

The best part about the episode is guessing what is to come. The episode itself is... fine I guess? I'd personally give it a B tier. It doesn't really stack up against the absolute best episodes in the series.

Ken R

The problem for me with season 2 is it opened up so strong with the Circle but then it went on this extended tour of dull mediocrity with the stupid little episodes that I guess were meant to be cute or wholesome in some way. It took two steps back from The Circle into TNGville. The Jem Hadar looks like a major attempt was made to course correct and get away from wheelchairs, people crying, and whatever else I'm forgetting.

Loot Narsbaar

I wish I could edit S1 and 2 down to one season

Damien Drake

I love that the second TNG was done DS9 simply said "Release the hounds!"

Evan Guthrie

They are gonna kill us for saying it's only A tier after all that fuss

Numinous2019

The showrunner changed from Piller to Behr about two thirds of the way through S2 (Piller still having the onscreen credit, but now focused on Voyager).

Numinous2019

That's a very interesting comparison. This episode is a 'getting there from here' type of story. It's purpose is more important than its standalone value.

GrimDark Narrator

While I don't think this is material for an S rating, the episode does a lot of things well. It introduces the Jem'Hadar and the Dominion as a serious but not ridiculously OP enemy. it sets the table for future plotlines but doesn't leave you hanging. Sisko and Quark were fun to watch together, but I could've lived with less Nog and Jake in this episode. It also blows up a Galaxy class ship, so that's gotta be an extra point. A tier from me.

Summer

Lets please note, the original uncut reaction, up to a quarter of those comments had nothing to do with the episode but with the feeling spoilers were being given, talk of names in credits, and similar things, probably only a quarter truly disagreed with your reaction, more people had a problem with you seeming uninvested in the story being told to the point of missing little details. As a fellow person who can rip an episode apart and say ‘A’ I get it, we come to you guys to see gut reactions, with others we want more scientific or cinnematic thoughts. You guys are great, just remember this is broad story telling you have to be in every moment unless you watch it five times in a row…..

Ryan Elton

DEFINITELY an S. This, is where the story really starts to pick up, and it just gets better! "THEEEEE motherf___in SISKO!!!" I hope you guys soon enjoy seeing what his "mothaf_____ pimp hand" looks like <3 Most badass Captain in ALL of Star Trek!!!

Joe J

The boys don't like them "Big Bads"...LOL. IMO, the quality of the writing is so weak in this show compared to TNG. More often than not I can literally anticipate what will be said by the characters, the writing is so obvious.

Herby Ragan

Now we are really cooking

Binty McFrazzles

What kind of c**t posts spoilers? I've been on the receiving end of it from certain popular Star Trek channels on YouTube who think it's okay to drop spoilers and post thumbnails on their videos as soon as the episode drops. Have a good Christmas, and hope you manage to take some time out.

Sam Langanke

It's easy to explain. With spoilers.

Sam Langanke

He clearly had a bad day and had to steam off.

Rick McCombs

Do these guys not realize that all Galaxy Class starships look very similar?

JordanK1991

They are not into the technical aspect of Star Trek. At least, not yet.

DonMiguel

Example: the Yamato (S02E11). It too was a Galaxy Class. its just the class of ship which is why they look the same. There's a ton of classes and we have seen many in episodes and movies to date. And their design is just hallmark of Federation style. Same reason Romulan and Klingon also have their distinct style across classes.

Captkirc

The episode is an E for Engagement Farming because no episode in either show has ever generated this many replies nor fostered as much impassioned debate. If you guys ever need click bait just put Jem’Hadar in the thumbnail

Jim J

He seems to be having a lot of those lately.

Who North America

It's a decent first half before handover to "THE PLOT."
