I'm fairly confident one of Gristle and Ramble is going to commit some reckless faux pas, but which one keeps changing likelihood

Grey

Ahh, this is interesting! Rake is very sympathetic towards the bison losing family lines while they destroy small wolf packs in their way (and other prey species), and tell their forcibly recruited new members to get over it and forget asap.

Luckyclaw

Ah, so before the current culture was gripped by fear, their loosely organized subgroups were capable of breaking off and living autonomously. Interesting. I'd speculate that the cows would learn these "secrets of the wind" during these times and build experience and confidence-- perhaps that's why Clay's relatives seemed so rudderless and unwilling to take action back in Run.

Luckyclaw

Explains a bit of why they don't seem to have a particular route they travel, either, in spite of being a nomadic culture several generations strong. This highly structured social order might actually be pretty new, relatively speaking.

It's interesting seeing Ramble is much more open-minded in some respects than Swift is, subverting our expectations from when we first were introduced to the different wolves when she was the clear outlier with a new perspective on how wolves need to live. Compare how quickly he seems to recognize that the bison are relatable and shows the first trickles of empathy with them while Swift remains pretty hardfast in just seeking to eat all the hollow animals at this point despite several significant encounters suggesting they are as complex as she is and a lot of goodwill from Rask. Of course Ramble taking to the ways of this pack will put him at direct odds with Swift whether she ever forms a truce with the hollow or not! Great writing.

I am just curious if the Stone Hallow could gain a wolf as an ally. I know Rask and Egg have made some changes but can't those two like, consume the same foods that a Rabbit or Squirrel also eats? Fruit? Nuts and seeds? No one said they had to starve a bit. It makes sense if both sides helped scavenge for food for one another. That'd be one way to help each other and, gain more trust.

Typos in the second to last panel/bubble...

Remony Ravine

Can't get enough of Rake's expressions, they're so good

teagangavet

Oh, can you be more specific? I'm not seeing any.. (if you're looking at 'riving,' it definitely looks like it could be a typo but it's just an uncommon word.)

teagangavet

Ah! Thanks, fixed. My eyes get so glazed over whenever I look back over pages, probably since I've already stared at them for hours.

teagangavet

Aah, wait, 'lineages'! Fixed and thanks! :]

Well... Egg is actually an American Badger, which is a hypercarnivore. She'd need worms, eggs, fish, poultry, and other meat substitutes, with less than 20% of her diet being any plant matter. Dietarily speaking, you could consider Egg equivalent to a small wolf. There's almost zero overlap in her diet with many of the species that make up the Hollow-- so a rabbit forager would need to change their focus when collecting stuff she could eat. (That said, some of what Egg has shared about her past makes me wonder if she's somehow partially European Badger, which are omnivores that construct family sets. These two species are massively different in a lot of ways)

JeffMakesGames

Well, pretty sure both sides can help one another scavenge for resources in order to survive and thrive. Whether it's food or metal. Pretty sure Oren or someone else suggested Duck Eggs and such for her and did scavenge for her. In turn, she dug holes for the metal because she is a better digger than the rest. Even then, we can already see that things like rabbits, squirrels, badgers, etc. are not their normal super small size. Teagan mentioned in a post that many of them can live like 25-35 years, so that already tells me there are some rules changed within this world, so it's not a stretch to think that Rask and Egg would have some plants added to one's diet.

Luckyclaw

It's true there's definitely rules changed in this world, that's a fair point. Still, thematically it would feel really out of place if it turned out the resolution to a major plot point was "all the obligate carnivores can just decide to be omnivores like Rask." I am super curious about the rules for the setting's anthros though, I hope when we get back to the Hollow we get more insight into wolf/hypercarnivore diet logistics.

JeffMakesGames

When you look back at page 328, we can actually see a side view of just.... how big everyone actually is. Wolves might be huge, but prey like Rabbits ain't no small critters. Not to mention the ability to be on two legs sometimes and use hands. With different rules, it may well be possible for a wolf to change their ways and have alternate ways of surviving. We'll just have to wait and see how things play out. Swift and her mate want to protect their pups.

i wonder who is older, rake or gristle?
