Ramble is such a tender soul. He joined for meat, but now that he's absorbed the philosophy and found himself roused by it, he has that sort of "outside-eye" towards the contradictions that exist within the Zenith. I hope he never loses his curiosity. I hope his sense of justice grows. Absolute good boy.

A lottery then. No wonder the bulls from Run were so anxious.

The mother of the very first sun: "Son, one day when you are long gone, your hollowed out skull will be carried around and be used as a bingo roller to determine the fate of your kin" All jokes aside, I assume there isnt enough natural attrition within the herd to sustain the wolf pack on their own, since they're choosing to sacrifice still living bulls? Or are those who die of old age/illness not offered up to the wolves

Microgrampup

At least Clay and his group’s former Mother was. As she had criticized in RUN, everyone else rather gamble their lives away than give the numbers needed to ensure Clay’s mission is successful.

Grey

True, I suppose it becomes a question: would you rather be afraid of one thing or everything?

Waya

Would suck to draw the marked stone but I'd imagine they're killed quickly and cleanly vs taken down in a hunt.Reminds me a bit of Mark of the Conifer. Dino fantasy book. The raptors have a pact with the herd and are able to challenge one to a duel if they can separate it from the herd. If the herbivore refuses the duel they're allowed to leave but are left to the wild carnivores and kicked from the herd.

Felidae

There's Battle Royale/Hunger Games, but also perhaps more prominently lots of Mad Max bald guys V8 cult vibes from the bison. "Witness Me!" "Witness!"

Seems like the rules of the Zenith go as follow for the bulls: Before sun down you can challenge the current Sun, if you win then you become the new Sun. But if you don't, then you just wasted your energy and are still left jockeying for a higher position in the lineup. After sundown, all the bulls line up single file (fighting to be first in line). Then the Sun shakes a rock out of the skull for each bull in line, slowly going down the line. There are mostly unmarked stones in the skull, but there are a chosen few marked stones. If the rock that falls out doesn't have a mark, that bull is safe for the month (and if they were near the front, likely to find a chick). If the stone has a mark, then they are killed and fed to the wolves. They do this until there are no stones left in the skull. It probably explains why the Sun isn't very beaten up at this point. Very few bulls would actually challenge him because they're saving their energy in order to fight their way to the front of the line later in the night. They probably won't challenge him until he gets old or is noticeably weakened.

the strongest vibes I'm getting here is Shirley Jackson's lottery, only with machismo

Morpheus

The RNG thing is odd to me. I kinda figured it would be an elimination contest thing.

Gale Tazzin

that sounds straight out of watership down

Givemeyourmilk

So you could still be the strongest, get to the front, and still die... Dang.

Grey

I was thinking of Cowslip’s Warren for sure!

Morpheus

I imagine those are too. They said the mothers decide how many to offer, which probably takes into account how many died via other means.
