This was the season that saw the expansion of the Champions League from 16 to 24 teams, second place sides gaining access and one nation having three teams for the very first time. The resurgence of Kiev, the madness of Newcastle v Barcelona, the young Monaco side, Ancelotti's early lesson and United and Juve locking horns yet again is more than enough for Martyn, Adam and David to get to grips with this week.

Enjoyed this gents, interesting points on Ancelotti (something I’d never realised back in the day). Feels like this was the last season barring 03/04 where a real unknown could progress deep in this tournament. I actually quite liked the double group stage format that was to come, if the players weren’t so knackered by the time it came around, it would probably have been a great invention. Not sure what your thoughts on that are?

I agree that teams have to learn how to play in the UCL, but I wouldn't say individuals within the team do necessarily. There's a few cases of players who have middling goalscoring careers domestically but tear it up in this competition - Peter Crouch being one, or even Gabriel Jesus if you want a modern example. Heck, look at Morelos and the UEL.

Talking about Lobanovskyi and the physical pressing game… then remembering that Oleksiy Mykhaylychenko played under him!! Love the analysis of teams on this show - looking forward and backwards about how they developed into something of a force, or a feature of European football. Fantastic set of shows.
