Great Pod. I don't believe anyone would cough up £7/£8m for Cantwell though. Hasn't done nearly enough.

Colin Blair

I agree. Papers said we paid £1.5m to buy him. I would be surprised if we got much better than £2.5m if we sold him considering how inconsistent he has been.

Douglas Wright

Shankland wont be the cheap option. Hearts wont want to sell him on the cheap. Shankland is massively overrated and isn't overly mobile or fast which is where the team seems to be going.

Spoon

Genuinely couldn’t disagree more, it’s the most obvious signing since Boyd, Miller, Novo or any other guy who is doing it consistently in the league we play in but we are desperate to do him down. I would rather see money spent on someone we know can handle the league and fixture card than take a punt on Julio Geordio based on an algorithm or long distance scouting. For strikers you can like them or loathe them it comes down simply to numbers, they either get goals or they don’t, they are robust and generally available or their aren’t. Would pay the £4m for Shankland, if we had last season things might have been at least a cup different.

Douglas Wright

I get your points but I really disagree. I dont think Shankland would have got us to the final. I don't think his all round game is what folk think it is, He also misses loads of chances, he isnt as clinical as everyone thinks

Ryan McMillan

I can’t see Hearts turning down £2m for Shankland if he isn’t away come August. In the end they wouldn’t pay £2m to have him on a 1-year loan. Which is the equivalent at this point.

Douglas Wright

He is there only goal threat, unless they sign some good goalscorers then I can't see them selling at all. Especially with Europe for them

Thomas Blair

Shankland is definitely not a poacher.

We won’t be signing any marquee signings We have to offload a few more from our squad We are dealing in the lower end of the market Champions League qualification changes our outlook

All about opinions and if he’s not your cup of tea I respect that. I notice the phrases ‘he misses chances’ creeps in a lot to our conversations as Rangers fans recently, which striker doesn’t miss lots ? The idea seems to be solidifying that missing a chance makes you a bad striker, very few score most of the chances they get, even less score chances consistently in our price range or league. We need to stop setting unrealistic criteria for our strikers, we need someone who knows the league and is robust taking punts on guys from outwith the league is fine but we cannot be surprised when we continue to lack goals. The number 9 now carries a ridiculous amount of pressure to bang 40 goals or he’s a dud. It’s wrong, the premise is flawed. The team needs more people on 10-12 goals across middle to front and a striker who gets 20-25 not one man banging in every chance we make. The whole thing collapses if we get him injured ! We also can’t have one guy playing constantly and keep the reserve players happy, for or match sharp the focus on one guy carrying it all on his shoulders to me anyway is wrong. Shankland’s all round game, in my opinion, is miles better than most other strikers in the league, he contributes in more phases of play, he can hunt a ball down and he can set others up. To me he is the definition of a team player and a proper leader. The signing is the biggest no brainer since Connor Barron. Anyone who has suffered my posts this season knows I defend Dessers. I get he started off being spattered with the bile around Beale but the guy has done what we need from a striker yet is slated for what he hasn’t done not recognised for what he DID do. We have guys who think Danillo is the messiah having played a handful of games and we have no idea how he comes back from the injury. We have a young guy coming in who is already being touted, by some, as the new Morelos (vastly over rated player for me) and he hasn’t kicked a ball but he’s good on you tube. Time for a reality check to my mind. Time to look at players with actual records of scoring IN Scotland as better fits than desperately searching for the Champ Manager guy who is plucked from obscurity and developed to being world class. It doesn’t suit our needs, I don’t personally think it even suits our league but it’s purely a punt. I get every player is at best an educated guess as to whether they fit or not. To me taking a guy with a few season of pedigree in your own league, who stays fit, who drives his team and wants to come is just low risk business. As I say he’s not the guy for you, totally cool, he is a goal scorer and his all round game is there for all to see. He even gave Scotland a shot in the arm coming on crating for others when he couldn’t get in himself. Rather Shankland than a random from a league with no correlation to our own.

I can't wait for shankland to leave hearts, sick of hearing about him on every podcast.

Pedro

Lennon Miller has a year left on his contract btw

David Innes

I’d definitely take Kenny McLean but Cairney would be no better than what we already have

Graeme Homer

Che Adams’ contract has expired. Cortes has basically played RW all his career minus a few games. Cairney isn’t the answer, Clement wants fitness, speed etc something he’s lost. Shankland has proven over his limited time with Scotland at the EURO’s he hasn’t got the physicality nor technicality to be a player for us.
