Birmingham City 2-1 Rangers Postmatch Reaction

Another worrying preseason night.

Comments

Davie Brand

Balogun summed it up perfectly. We are fucked.

Steven L

The score lines main nothing but the performances are worrying. Can only hope it clicks come Saturday the 3rd of August.

David Innes

Clement looks like he’s going through the motions to me - worrying times indeed

Gary Shaw

Can genuinely see us being at least 5 points behind after the Parkhead game.

Jim Milne

The Michael Beale Debacle has set us back years.

Russ

Got the fear for Clement ngl. And for our club more importantly.

8luenose1872

Clement is persisting with tactics he doesn't have the players for imo and it looks like hes burnt players out with the preseason training or its just most of them dont give a fk.

Colin McL.

Clement seems to be forgetting we saw the same organisational failings last season.

Stu Baddeley

Todd Cantwell could of been so much more for us but his attitude (on and off the pitch) and his irregularity in performance let him down, I think he thought he'd come up to Ibrox and be a star without having to graft and that would get him his move back to the EPL. The realisation that it wasn't going to be easy has undone him. Wouldn't be surprised if he struggles else where also.

Alan Weir

Clement's answer to your question, David, has to be a worry for all of us, most of all for him. Why isn't he able to create "intensity" in players who are a week or so away from the season's start? Why are players not going out there likes it's their last game to prove their worth and grab a jersey for the season ahead. I've kept the faith in Clement, but I'm now worried he's realising the job is beyond him.

David Scott

Any new players will need to get time to gel into the squad or whats left of it , times slowly catching up with us and we are going to get caught cold in the league and in europe unless something changes fast, Union Berlin might give this squad another lesson.

dotty 84

13 players not in that squad, if we can sell 6 of them and replace them, sooner than later it'll get easier.

William George Bell

Watched the game and whilst we can talk all night about tactics it’s patently obvious the players aren’t playing for the manager and it’s been this way since the beginning of March. To me there’s definitely a broken relationship there and it’s not going to end well for us if it continues this way.

Gary Q

Sadly, we already know how this season is going to pan out. Depressingly familiar.

Russ

Which is some laugh btw, this squad haven't got a leg to stand on in regards to wanting a manager to prove himself to them and convince them. Things got comfortable and he's tried to change that, went down like a sack of shit by the looks of it. Chancers man.

Martin Sutherland

We’ll go nowhere under Clement. That much is clear. Two ex-Aberdeen bit part players looking like our best players at the moment. Beggars belief.

ali t

Need to see Hearts line up on Sat and see some improvement. Worrying across the board

William Hughes

10 days before the games that matter and I'm struggling to name our starting 11. What I've watched so far, we need a dominant, experienced centre half, a driving midfielder, a pacy, right sided winger and a centre forward who can gather and finish - in 10 days. That and rid our squad of the players who just have ran their race with us. Should be fine.

Spoon

Thanks for picking through that David, spot on with the question to the manager and comment on the strategy. As i have said on here this formation and set up just isnt working to my total amateur view, there are huge gaps in the team and the Def / Mid / Atk look like three components cobbled together doing different things, differently. I like Clement as a manger, I like his intensity and honesty (mostly) but he needs to give that squad a shake, get them on his wavelength and do it fast. I respect that Danillo has indeed been out a while, he has had a bad (could argue two) injuries but the trust and faith being invested in him seems a bit blind, he might come back and blitz the league but he just as easily might struggle to shake the injury, not come back the same player or just not be the answer thats hoped for, to me its very much in the balance. To be hanging our hat on him as a single point of failure worries me and I’m not sure he’s not just a fancier more expensive Dessers or Lammers, undoubtedly a good footballer but not what we need. It’s early to judge in terms of games this season but not how long he has been here vs his contribution to date. Your analysis was spot on regarding those given opportunity but not taking their chances although in fairness to King I thought he did fine for a boy who has been hammered into various gaps when required and put through the ringer in the CL through no fault of his own, would hope there might be a slot for him and game time next year. Lowry looks like what those who dont rate him suspected, not really that much use, if we could splice him and Wright that would be some player. Concerning stuff overall so far which is a bit of Groundhog Day for recent pre-seasons. If the layman on here can pick out the faults and issues lets not pretend they arent clear and obvious. It might seem populist to be negative but the same fears were there last season for many and while we console ourselves as fans that results dont matter in pre-season as I get older i think that maybe they do, we should at least see building momentum, slickness and evolution. All that been said, i am willing to blindly trust the manager if we get in Shankland and pair him up with any of the other strikers (hell even use him as the fabled 10) with maybe a Kenny Maclean arriving too. We desperately need more control over the midfield and must stop isolating our striker then complaining when they are outmuscled or crowded out against three defenders and dont hold up the ball. I wont bang on again about Dessers but even with Wright buzzing around beside him it looked more effective than when we ask the big ox to shuttle about against a full defence. Against all logic and reason I believe if we get in a few like Shankland and Maclean they will indeed swing our fortunes, restore our greatness and be the staunch messiahs that win us the league. Im still uncertain of where we are going this season but I am willing to be bought off with the right signings and go again.s

Paul

A continuation of form since March onwards. Blame the board all you want (and I will) but by god we can at least expect more on the park. Sadly it's got all the hallmarks of an awful start and new manager incoming

Alan Ferguson

Shambolic and for all I think Clement needs backed, I’m really worried at how badly coached the team looks. No matter what players come and go in next week or so, we look miles away from challenging Celtic….but worse still, we should still be good enough to beat every other side in Scotland, yet none of us will be surprised if we fail to finish 2nd this season based on how honking, clueless and disjointed the team is looking

Latimer

Go and get McInnes. Last two managers have been incapable of organising a team or making them understand what they are asking them to do. Rangers are about to implode.

Ian

Too much negativity. I am a bear who will support us no matter what. What’s the alternative????

William Hughes

Imagine a Rangers team that reflects our truly fantastic support.

Alastair McGeoch

We’ve kept changing managers, fact is the squad is still predominantly the same squad as shat the bed last season and the season before that and the season before that. Every player except Butland knows Clement doesn’t rate them and we’ve essentially built a squad of shitebags that aren’t good enough to play for us on wages they know they won’t get elsewhere. The little bit of faith I have/I am clinging to is that at least Clement is punting Tav, Goldson etc and not repeating the mistakes his predecessors have made by backing them. So, going to be a rough start to the season but I think it’s time to back the manager. The dross has to go, unfortunately the majority of our squad is dross so it’s a massive turnaround….

KennyY

The majority are fantastic but we have some who want the manager out already. That’s not the answer.

KennyY

With respect I think Connor Barron has stood out in pre season games David. I see him as a starter every week.

Andy MacArthur

We cannot keep blaming the manager for the failings of the board and the squad. Big Phil has shown in his previous jobs that how capable he is. He managed Brugge to consecutive titles and impressive UCL scalps. He knows how to set up a team tactically. He needs the supporters on his side. Any blame is on the board and only them. Hopefully a few signings over the coming days can help lift the squad and the supporters.

Douglas Innes

Criminal in that 1st half that not 1 player or the coaching staff saw that switch of play from left to right or right to left.... at least Yilmaz was close enough to his opposite player but Tav as per usual tucks too far in giving his opposite player 20 yards every time .... criminal

Steve23

Sound analysis David. I’m very surprised at the managers comments on shape and tactics. I know these games are about fitness but I also thought we would be nailing the teams shape and tactics by this stage. So when do we start thinking about that? The week leading up to then hearts game? I just don’t accept that but what do I know! I am very concerned but I hope and pray we don’t come out of the first phase of the season lookimg for yet another manager, that would be disastrous.

Tommy

As much as we don’t want to confront the reality, are we maybe being unrealistic to expect such a major overhaul to immediately work? I sense we’ve got a transition year ahead of us considering we’re starting off a very low base. And I worry our support isn’t prepared for that. I’d be inclined to give Clement a pass - a lot of the mess isn’t of his making. But he does need to show something (in fairness he did last year) Bennett can point to terrible squad management before his watch which is fair but collectively we need everyone to improve. I’m just not sure how realistic it is to expect everything to work immediately. This may be a project and if we don’t show patience then there’s a real risk they may run away with another 9IAR

Paul

It doesn't work like that. He is the manager, we should be seeing the basics being carried out. Since March our form has been horrendous. You can't say he gets a pass regardless.

Tommy

This is just a general point I’m making and not a criticism or comment on what you said David (incase it reads that way!) Massive week ahead off the pitch

Graeme McLeod

The team that started that first half was not predominantly the team that failed repeatedly under previous managers though. Other than Tav and Balogun, none of them were regulars under previous managers. The complete lack of shape and players seemingly having no clue what they were supposed to do can be pinned on Clement. Or folk can keep pretending he's immune from criticism.

Tommy

Muscat was in the final 2 - worth checking the job yes done on China. One to keep in mind if it blows up. I feel Clement needs time, this isn’t his mess

William Hughes

I like Clement. He's got a clearout and rebuild from the defence up. Get young, hungry players in with re-sell value - the model we all keep hearing. Given the time and support, he's our man I reckon. Or what, another guy in and do the same thing over and over.

Andy MacArthur

Our form from March saw the same problems every manager has had outside of one Covid season with that squad. Now we have the chance to rebuild it and the manager hasn’t been backed by the board.

David Campbell

Just back in my city centre hotel from tonight's game. The gaffer is under serious pressure. Tonight tactically wise was nothing short of disgraceful a league 1 English team popped us of the park it was embarrassing and that is one the manager and his staff. We look a poorly coached team.

Paul

I agree with that. However we don't seem to do the basics, we have no tempo or shape. These are things regardless of who you have playing for you, you should be able to see. I want him to succeed but he isn't blameless. He wanted to keep Lundstram and still plays Scott Wright, starts Tav when a club is in for him. You can't blame the board there.

Heart and Hand

Literally nobody is saying they are stopping supporting Rangers. They are merely discussing what we are watching.

Heart and Hand

No you are right and again it’s something that should have been messaged all summer. Building for the next five years, not for August etc. Too late now.

Ian

But it’s a downward spiral that has to stop

David Innes

A transitional season where Clement sticks around and we start to see progress is the best case scenario as far as I can see

David Campbell

Starting to question has he lost a section of the dressing tbh yes we all wanted huge change but Goldson tav and cantwell all want to leave the club. Then after tonight he speaks about players lacking intensity etc Why aren't they doing what he is asking?

Tess

Clement worked miracles to get us within touching distance last season before we inevitably dropped off, I think his only mistakes so far were not signing a striker in January and also when he came out and backed the players after the draw at Dens Park. I still believe he's the right man for us, we desperately need to overhaul the squad though. What I saw tonight and against United at the weekend was worrying to say the least.

Scott Hamilton

Think fans would be somewhat patient not having players of clear quality while we move old/deadwood on if you could see he's trying to implement a brand new style or approach But right now there's nothing to be excited about at all Concerning

Heart and Hand

That’s not something the fans can stop. Thousands turned up, and will again Saturday. Fans are doing their part.

Adam

To be honest, this summer and pre-season is sort of an anomaly. When was the last summer you can remember us losing 6 or 7 key and experienced players in the one window? 1998? That's what we are in the process of right now. Lundstram gone, Sima gone, Tav potentially going, Goldson going, Cantwell potentially going, and Dessers rumoured to be going. That's before you take into account Barisic and Jack both going. With the potential that Hagi goes too. Take all those guys out of the current squad, what are we actually left to work with? Who is winning us games? Where are the match winners? There's not a lot there at the moment, sadly. We've not made any big starter level signings yet. Cerny is a good start, but we need a midfielder (or two), a new starting centre half (maybe even two) and another few attackers (assuming Dessers leaves). Clement would have had a far easier time of it this summer, if he'd decided to keep the majority of the squad together and just added a few additions throughout the summer. That's not what is happening, though, that's not what people wanted to happen either. It's seismic changes to the squad so far. I'm not surprised that things are looking grim at the moment. I said at the end of May, when everyone was demanding that we sold everybody, that our support would really struggle with what that actually entails. We can sit here and go 'aye but', the facts are pretty clear, years of ineptitude in the transfer market has led us to basically having to do a pre-season with a bunch of kids playing, while we wait for Koppen to clear out the garbage from two previous reigns. So, that we are actually able to sign good players. Yet people are expecting to see signs of what awaits us this season, we don't even have a nailed on starting 11 in place, how we meant to have any clear idea what direction this actually heading!? Forgive the rant, and please know that it comes from a place of love and understanding at everyone's frustration/concern.

Graeme McLeod

It's not unfair or unrealistic to expect to be able to see what the manager is trying to do style wise or tactics wise, no. It's not unfair or unrealistic to expect him and his staff to have improved at least some of the players - especially the younger players who he has said are part of his plans - either. None of this is happening though, which is why some fans aren't convinced by him. It's one thing to keep telling us he needs to be able to bring in his own players, but to do what? We should be able to see some style by now. It's unrealistic to expect fans to have blind faith in Clement and Koppen - who hasn't been in charge of recruitment before joining us - when we've seen this play out more than once before.

Graeme McLeod

I think we're past the point of fans accepting the "five year plan" pish though, David, and that's partly why it isn't being communicated as such. We accepted it'd take "a few years" when Gerrard came in back in 2018, but we shouldn't have gone so far backwards since 2021 that we could realistically be looking at trying to stop them doing another 9IAR with our next title win. You don't get "five year plans" at clubs like ours. And even if the board had communicated that as early as January, there'd still be major red flags over the lack of any discernible style, lack of basics on the pitch and the club signing projects for the future when the starting XI is dross. I think there's going to be ugly scenes at some point this season with protests aimed at the board, especially when you factor in the stadium fiasco. Not saying that'll help anything, but it's got all the makings of fans having had enough and venting frustrations. (The board getting pally with the likes of Tom English and Keith Jackson doesn't help any either.)

maccalsa

Ok, I'm concerned, but I'm a little confused why anyone is surprised. If we assume that we played our strongest team last season and they were a bunch of bottlers, we let a lot of them go (others want to leave) and we don't sign players to replace them, let alone better players. What were you all expecting? Sadly, you can already see this being the managers fault again in the eyes of fans, I predicted Clement would be gone by Halloween when we hired him. He may be gone earlier at this rate

maccalsa

Birmingham have a young midfielder Jordan James being chased by big Italian teams and have overhauled their squad this off season. The fact that they are a league 1 team is irrelevant. They have better players than us, and if you think that's disgraceful I'd take a wee sit down now as its going to get worse before it gets better (if it gets better) Bottom line we have a squad of players, a lot who came from named clubs, where those clubs did not even try to keep them. That should tell its own story

maccalsa

Well if you are not happy with a 5 year plan, how does a 10, 15 or 20 ysar plan take you? Stamping your feet and saying it's not good enough for a club like ours every season has absolutely zero impact. In fact it's worse than thst it has negative impact as we'll be looking for a new manager again in October at this rate.

maccalsa

He wanted to keep Lundstrom, If that doesn't tell you what Clement feared about the squad nothing will

Cameron

There’s a lot of parallels with the situation Edu and Arteta inherited at Arsenal. They moved on a lot of players and started a multi-year rebuild, while fans were demanding Arteta be sacked during the transition. There was no guarantee sticking with Arteta would work, and similarly, we need to give Clement and Koppen time to work on the rebuild even if it’s going to be painful in the meantime.

Luke

PC said he wasn’t a magician when he came in the door and he has said a massive rebuild is needed. A rebuild from the ground up. There is not a single coach in football that is going to come through the door and turn that side into a title winning squad. The pressure is already on him because fans are making unrealistic demands. If he goes early on in the season, it would be another milestone for us on the downward trajectory. If there is a better manager out there, I’m sure he would have enough common sense to steer well clear of the riot that is going on at Rangers. My main concern is he looks like someone who doesn’t want to be there. Who can really blame him.

stephen

We seem to be disorganised on the park, a shambles off the park and now we seem to have the makings of an unhappy dressing room. Happy New Season everyone.....

Graham Roy

Can’t argue with what you are saying however I don’t understand our tactics. I get he doesn’t have the quality at the moment but he should be able to have us better organised than currently.

David Campbell

Birmingham city are a better coached team than ours and that is alarming. Yes we've got poor players but that's no excuse for the tactical mess we see on the park. Space everywhere, no press no intensity that stuff is on Clement mate.

Bob Keith

This is such a universal get-out for managers. They still need to show signs of improvement with what they have and we're probably going backwards.

Andrew Whiteside

I’m going to reserve judgment until after we have played a competitive fixture. The boss needs players that can execute a game plan and not hope the club get him what he needs.

Luke

I get what you’re saying. I’m not defending last nights performance, that was totally unacceptable. Just seems like our expectations always exceed the reality of our situation and our fans always call for the managers head. If he has lost interest, he should go. If he thinks he can work with what he has, he should stay. It should be his decision and the fans should back him. Communication needs to come from the club at all levels though. After all, we are paying a heavy price for the continued failures of the board.

Alastair McGeoch

Fair point. I am not saying Clement is immune from criticism. His signing of Silva, blind loyalty to Lundstrum and refusing to change his formation to suit the players he has/make us hard to beat are worrying. Feels like yet another season where will probably have a good feeling about how the season will go by early September.

Heart and Hand

Whether we’re happy or not with it is irrelevant unfortunately. It’s going to take a while. I agree they don’t give out news they perceive will go down badly unless they have to but I think that is poor leadership.
