I wasn't impressed by us on Saturday Tactically I didn't know what we were trying to do. First 45 was a shambles Same culprits from last season that are just not good enough. Mattondo, the worst I've seen in a long time. We've become just a noise, another league team to the other mob, and that is both embarrassing and unacceptable. And as for Dynamo Kiev, hide behind the sofa time

Colin Mathie

Lets face it, they're gonna gub us.

Stace1ofthePeople

Fact of the matter is.. we are shite. Keen to see what we look like going into September and maybe take it from there but until then its gonna be hard going watching the same old crap week in week out. If we sign the likes of sima, shankland a experienced CM and CB then i'll feel a lot more positive and hopeful towards this team and season. I'm in two minds about the 'tactics and style of play chat' when we went on a run and won the LC nobody was arsed about the style of play. Win games and trophies and nobody will care but were not winning anything😅😅

Stace1ofthePeople

Also can someone clarify if we away DK do we have to play another two legged tie to get through to CL? What happens if DK beat us over the two legs?

David Innes

Yes another 2 legged tie if we win. If we lose we go straight into the Europa League group stages

David Innes

We are in real danger of becoming to them what Aberdeen are to us i.e. we hate them but don’t consider them to be serious rivals

Spoon

We are playing at our level, we have a set up and squad of a top 6 team and a manger who isn’t flexible or creative enough it seems to get more from what we have. The chairman’s interview didn’t annoy me at the time but does now as it was the same tripe we have had from the board for almost a decade, blame past bad decisions for now and try to make out it will be fine soon. We should expect to get more out of this squad, yes it’s got areas where quality is thin but that’s why you coach, that’s where you use set up to mitigate weaknesses or enhance strengths. It’s not happening. The Lundstrum comment is bizarre, if he thinks Lundstrum was genuinely what we needed after his utter disaster of a season last year we are in bother. We absolutely do not need a guy sitting 5 yards from the defence taking the ball. There’s time to turn this around but the direction the mangers taking causes real concern. The focus on moving on a few players and it will be fine is false for me, it’s well beyond that and assumes that the ones coming in fit and immediately get up to speed. The biggest issue I had with Beale while still in his honeymoon period with others was that what he said and what we could see were miles apart. Clement needs to be careful he doesn’t torpedo himself and do the same to my mind. Switch it about, get a shape that works for the players we have not the ones we want. Most of all though we are lacking any any dig or craft and that’s concerning

Spoon

Those tactics worked. Even the worst tactics can over a spread of games but the right tactics win more often and more comfortably. A broken clock is right twice a day and all that. I think he has seen us in Europe and got the wrong idea about the squad and what his bread and butter is. In Europe with space, time and less physicality we excelled and the players we had seemed to tune in. Domestically every game is attritional and a slog. Week in week out we face physical organised teams who set up to frustrate and nicks chance, it’s not rocket science but their managers with players miles below our own manage to show shape and you know what their plan surely we should see at least something similar with our set up? Even if Clement says he wants wingers cutting in and a ten pushing up while full backs stay back or whatever the issue is, does what he wants to do work here ? Not sure a single striker ever really works well in Scotland particularly now 4 or 5 at the back with 4 or 5 in front is standard. My worry isn’t that he isn’t a good coach, but that he’s the Dessers of coaches, good guy, will do a job but not really the right fit for us or the league. More than willing to be convinced but after the Beale fiasco nobody gets blind faith or to try and tell me what I’m seeing isn’t what I am seeing as the manger.

Stace1ofthePeople

Yeah I see what you are saying. I'm no tactical expert but I understand a lot of parts of the game etc. What were the tactics when clement first came in? And how is it different now? I could be wrong but I just think we do well at getting the ball in and around the box in different ways but we just don't score due to players who lack quality and our front line matondo dessers Wright mccasuland etc not being clinical or good enough? I like clement so suppose I want to try and give him the benefit of the doubt. For argument if we had sima , shankland or miovski whoever it is people want and whittaker for example I reckon we win that game All ifs buts and maybes I know. We just need to start winning 🤦‍♀️

John Smith

Hearts have a legitimate shout at getting 2nd. And our club as usual won’t act until it’s too late

Greg

They don't, they faced us at our weakest in years and couldn't get a goal. They even had the mythical Lawrence shankland on the field and still couldn't win.

David Kiltie

Maybe the Lundstram comment is being misconstrued. He was referring to the type of player rather than the player himself. Clement has been accused of having a blind spot for Lundstram but the fact that he has moved on showed that the club was not willing to go to any lengths to keep him.

Spoon

Mate its only my opinion, it comes from a desire to buy in and get behind the gaffer but I can’t pretend I haven’t heard and seen this story before and my patience for being fed shite and someone calling it chocolate is gone. Clement is carrying the weight of about a decade of Rangers mismanagement, more if you add in the collapse and rebuild up the leagues. He is being judged based on countless bad decisions around how the club was run, the squad was built and players were bought or sold. I get that it’s not fair, but by the same token even the chairman who talked lots about medium to long term highlighted that Rangers must still win. There can be circumstances and factors at play but the gaffer must show he can get more out what he has and use it effectively and thats what I am not seeing. At the moment he looks like he’s shoe horning guys into a system they don’t suit, it looks like the nuances of playing the system isn’t filtering into the players and to my eye it doesn’t look effective now that teams have had 6 months of us playing it. Like any system it took a few by surprise at first but the SPFL is nothing if not good at dragging teams down to its level. I am done defending Dessers to people as personally I think the problem is far wider than him and to focus on him comes from an unrealistic place. I fully accept he wont make it with us as the optics are that he isn’t clinical, I tend to agree but not as strongly as some make out. I think he is talented, flawed and about what you get for the money we spent. What I do fully agree with is that in this current set up we are not playing to his strengths and are unlikely to get the return we need from him. No argument. Where I have issues is why are we overly reliant on just the 9 to score. Why arent we set up to compliment the guy we have up fronts attributes until we can replace them ? Why is he left isolated, why are we using wingers when we have on guy in the box against multiple big defenders who love packing the box and denying space ? Who else is going to chip in ? Sima is injury prone and would cost a fortune, he has had good games and bad, I dont believe he is any less freaky than Dessers. The abderdeen striker is out of our budget and I have only seen him vs us so no idea if he is as good as folk make out. Shankland I would have in a second so no arguments there, however half our fans think he’s slow, he’s one dimensional and is too old. If he played one game and didn’t score or missed a few he would be slated. That’s part of the issue we have every striker under so much pressure to be the difference its frightening, but it also absolves everyone else from having to chip in. You could argue at least Dessers is shooting to miss, nobody else even bothers and we have midfielders who would rather go back to the keeper than take a dig from 20 or wingers who could hit the broadside of the barn from 10 paces. I guess overall I agree with you but I dont see us getting the quality that would dramatically improve things, I dont see us again being able to buy our way out of a dip so it will come down to the manger being creative with what he has or coaching them to be better. One of the niggles I have is have the squad now just decided he is the Belgian Beale ? Has the early momentum and messaging become diluted or are they unhappy with his management style ? For all I totally support the way he handled Cantwell (mostly as I just never liked the guy) does the squad have concerns about it ? Have the core group lost faith in the manager, his methods or tactics ? Lots of stuff that it could be, lots of issues to resolve but one thing is for sure off the decade we have had there is limited time for anyone at the club to get it right before doubts will come in and pressure mounts. It might not be fair but it is what it is.

Miguel Sanchez

My main concern with the idea we've been good in Europe in recent years is the squad is almost fully purged of all those years of experience I mean it's only Tav that's left who has season in season out punching above our weight. You could mention Wright but it's a tragedy in some sense he's had as much experience he has had (Europa semi and final) but he didn't necessarily get us there Gio utilised him to be competent and carry out instruction. The rest of the squad have last year's coughing and spluttering run to last 16 but it wasn't always impressive. I hope the "know how" has carried over to new squad but it's not promising.

Spoon

What type of player ? A guy who slowed everything down and dropped in between centre backs, or got sent off to avoid having to play when he was gash, thats worrying. Lundstrum provided very lilttle in terms of maturity and leadership other than to demand a 10 yard pass and give it back, a handful of decent games a season being the benchmark for a rangers mid is poor. For a Rangers team to need that amount of cover is mind boggling, i can see it in the CL but domestically needing that, not for me. If he wanted that cover just play 433 as many have said elsewhere. Again bud, I want to buy into Clement, he started like a breath of fresh air but regardless of the other elements of the club I can’t say I buy into what he’s doing as I neither see it as effective or believe its going to work in Scotland. Happy, delighted even to be wrong and it all clicks, until then I reserve he right to say I’m not getting it.

Robert White

You've articulated clearly what many of our less articulate moans are about. Wish the manager could read your post.

Iain Campbell

Clement wanted Lundstram to stay. We were not prepared to offer the wage demands of the player. The fact he wanted him to stay is concerning. And he had a major blindspot with him. As he currently does with Wright

Calum Morrison

It’s quite clear clement isn’t going to play a flat three and is wanting diomande to be a link in midfield. Unless I’ve missed it I don’t think clement has ever gone to flat three in midfield even in a game to close it out. Our attempt at a press starts in a 442 formation with the 10 pushing up.

AJG

Simon…you need to speak up or buy a new mic. Mon the Rangers.

Grant Sneddon

Agree completely re shape. IMO if Clement wants to persist with that, then an upgrade on personnel is required. He would be better moving to a three in midfield as currently we are too open in the middle of the park which exposes our deficiencies in defence too much which is why I think our recruitment should be aimed towards that sort of system

Stace1ofthePeople

Totally get what you mean about buying ourselves out a dip. I honestly do not have a clue could be all of the above, could be lack of players, fitness and quality. But you're right this has been a build up of years of mismanagement and has basically imploded on PC. Can any other manager though really fix this mess in as short a time as the fans want with no money? Its always easier to walk into a role and make signings and change things from a position of strength , when everything is rosy. and players settle easier when you are winning things. We just seem to be so turbulent and mis managed I think rotating yet another manager would just be mental. It would be adding fuel to this absolute bin fire. This feels to me like when Gerard came in. I think as frustrating as it is PC needs more than one window and needs time with new players. If it means not winning anything in the short term to propell us on to good things then so be it. It's such a shit situation

Spoon

All fair bud, I just wish we were able as a club to be honest about it all. I can buy into a rebuild or three year plan but let’s set out some foundations and have some real idea of how we get there. My frustration is we hear the same stuff and do the same things but expect different results. I genuinely like Clement and his management style but the results in my own opinion should be slightly better in terms of seeing a style or vision. If we were banging 3 a game but losing three as we didn’t have the right defenders or a missing midfield key player but we could see something I would defend him. I just don’t get leaving one guy up front in Scotland. I don’t get the lack of basic quick passing or even direct running it’s all just a bit uninspiring. The problem and it’s not of his making is subsequent boards have made it incredibly difficult for any manager. They come in, have a plan and the 6 months in hit turbulence and it knocks the fans belief. Now that’s fine if you win 50% of the trophies over the last 12 years and haven’t been rag dolled for a decade but any short term set back sadly gets put against the back drop of abject underperformance of the last 10+ years. Thats where the rebuild has failed. It’s not fair on Clement, I get that but it’s reality. For the record I want him to stay and I believe he can do good things. I get disheartened with the comments around a Lundstrum style player or his apparent lack of interest in Shankland though as to me those are red flags. Lundstrum and guys of that mould have been what’s held us back, where domestically if he doesn’t fancy the leagues most prolific and flexible striker I despair. Let’s agree we both hope that he turns it around, he doesn’t get a free pass though and ultimately he will be judged on his results regardless of it being fair ! Good chat 👍🏻
