James great pod and enjoyed your own comment, self reflection wont catch on, dont back down….. double down! My own take on Dessers is he is indeed unfairly judged and under appreciated. People went early on slating him, the team was gash and a narrative started. People now seem unable to look beyond this or unwilling to give the guy any credit without it being a backhanded remark. I think the narrative remains and people are unwilling to reassess. It’s not unique to H&H but across the Rangers pod community very few shows can look at what he did in a game with out referring to misses past. Any praise is qualified with comments like ‘Dessers being Dessers’ ‘We saw both sides of him’ ‘He scored but…’ etc I don’t get it personally, its like the Mark Lawrence school of defensive commentary where no attacker scores a good goal its always a defensive mistake. It starts with a position and fits the evidence to meet the narrative. This isn’t new, McCoist is about the last guy I remember just being hailed an amazing striker. Boyd for example was just a finisher, Miller was only instinctive, Colak recently was only good at scoring goals but with Dessers we seem to have gone beyond that and the goals he does score to some aren’t that important. Despite him showing he is strong and can hold and link up its ignored and the mantra is he can’t do this or its not good enough. Unlike the recently departed Colombian who took sometime to score in the OF game Dessers did almost immediately, in fact he should have had a few more bar poor ref calls. He scored in every competition last year but it isn’t enough. He has scored good goals too, last nights timing of the run and finish if it had been anyone else would be getting raved about, as its Dessers though it was all about the cross. The desperation among some to do him down just turns me off when i hear it. It’s fine to wish he was more clinical or to say he’s not my type of striker, thats subjective but to do what many seem to want and actively deride him is too far for me. Dismissing the good stuff he does with what people wished he did just approaches things in the wrong way to my mind. Ifhe had the return people think he should he would be gone from us in 6 months, the fact that there were apparently clubs of a decent level in for him should be a warning to those keen to empty him, why if he is so poor do other want him ? I doubt we can ever again get a 9 that some people seem to expect I dont think in the current set up any 9 would score considerably more than Dessers has. Danilo might come back from his knee injury but theres every chance he wont. Before he was injured he wasn’t any better thought of than Dessers, he had been patchy and unlike Dessers who had to play through the Beale transition and take all the fan flak Danilo sat out injured betting better in some peoples heads week on week he was collecting his £30k in the stands. No striker in the SPFL has banged the amount of goals people expect Dessser to and if he converted every chance that people claim he should he would be a 60 goal a season striker. Some conveniently forget he plays up front alone in a team struggling to make chances and half the time he has had to make the chance for himself as the supply is either non existent or of poor quality. With his movement it’s no surprise that when given a quality ball in the box he takes it for me. As the team improves isn’t there every chance he will ? At the weekend for example where people were saying he missed sitters the Xg was 0.5 so did he really under perform ? The lob I think he was closed down, the short was in fairness straight at the keeper but how often do we hear the cry ‘just put your laces through it and hit the target’ and the header was a good defensive block. Not sure it was as bad from Desssers as folk made out. His work rate is utterly dismissed by many. My own view is that he puts in a power of work for a centre forward, some of the TV pundits who critique him could perhaps think back to their own mobility on the pitch, their contribution to defending or their lack of pace before slating the boy. His robustness and stamina is also undervalued as for a whole season he more or less carried the striking jersey with no back up while the mythical Danilo collected his £30k a week in the stand. For where we are in the football food chain, for our budget and for our bunkernut 60 game season where 50 games are vs a low block and loaded defence I think his return is decent. What would take him to the next level is probably another half dozen league goals. If he could get 20 + in the league alone then the whole dynamic changes. I like the guy, I dont believe he is perfect but I dont believe we will go into the market and get significantly better currently. I would if it was an option get Shankland, he would be my first choice 9 and if there was a way to get him and Dessers into the team that would be my ideal set up. 442 and two strikers but I’m not Phil. I dont put the faith in Danilo others do, I have no clue if the Moroccan boy is any use at all but if Clement did think he was better than we have we would have seen him by now. The fan critique of players has been going this way for some time, Tav has had his FFS, Ridvan has been too small, Souttar is a bombscare, DAvies a waste of skin, Balogun isnt able to play enough, Wright is a waste of oxygen, Jefte until last night was defensively rubbish etc I think we have become ungrateful, I think our expectations are out of kilter. I also think there are some many nuances in terms of set up, style, personnel churn that make judging a player week to week difficult. I know others will be on the goal opposite side of this, I get the frustration with Dessers he frustrates me too but he doesnt annoy me or provoke the sarcastic comment, the doing down or the underplaying what he does bring in me. He definitely has flaws, but who doesn’t in our team? We end up with Dessers, Danilo and Igamane the one I’m worried about is Danilo to be frank as the weight of expectation on a guy who’s played under 10 games is frightening, he can only fail to deliver at this stage. Keep up the good work bud.

On Dessers James he’s the exact same as Alfie as he wasn’t prolific and missed a lot of sitters but love Alfie got and the hate dessers gets is the only difference. I do think we need a better/more prolific striker though.
