Rangers go through after a win v St Johnstone. David reports from Hampden.

Matondo has everything in his locker and does everything right until he gets a glimpse of goal then he falls to pieces, sorry but he couldn’t finish a fish supper, he is a huge issue in our attack in my opinion, he lacks the quality where it matters Dessers will do for me, gives his all and doesn’t hide, fans love to point out his failures and misses, maybe tonight they will see that Danilo or Mbappe as some fans believe does and will continue to miss exact the same or even more as Cyriel does

William Noble

How much better were we when Barron came on

Gary Shaw

Into the next round and created a good amount of chances but we’re still far too open, not anywhere near dominant enough in possession and it’s going to bite us big time against slightly better opposition

John Breen

Can someone tell me what are we going to do about Tav and the incoming Celtic game? We all know what’s going to happen if he plays and I want to know if we are going to wave him goodbye before the game. He plays we lose. It’s that simple

Alan Ferguson

I think Matondo and Jefte were the 2 best players in first half. Matondo defo tired in 2nd half

David Kiltie

For parts of the second half it looked as though Barron was playing right back and Tavernier in centre midfield. Anyone else notice this?

Ally Mair

Completely agree we will get ripped apart down that side it happened last season and he has regressed

Heart and Hand

But if it wasn’t for Matondo setting up the goal Dessers doesn’t score. You’re doing the same with Rabbi as you’re on at others about Cyrile - having a prejudged opinion and not going on what you’ve watched Billy 😀

Billy Forrester

Absolutely wrong David, I have given rabbi more chances and supported him when others haven’t, I give players time but I’m afraid Matondo is just utter dross in front of goal and setting up a goal doesn’t change my opinion the same as it won’t change ur and the vast majority of your podders opinions on dessers who they continually comment on what he can’t do yet he does the thing we all want the others to do and that’s score Plus I watched Rabbi today and whilst fast and going past players he is a headless chicken once in sight of the goals, he is shite

Luke

Ye he did a bit. And was good to see him start the game. Frustrating part is, with all that pace he should be doing a lot more. It's like he doesn't believe in himself. We really need him to step up and be a main player this season with regards to demanding the ball and taking on players to get us up the park. He definitely needs the old saying "a good run of games" We haven't had a good return on the money invested in him as of yet, but you could say that about a good few players. I hope this is his break through season.

We have had a lot of backwards and side steps recently, I think today was relatively positive. I get why people are wary about giving praise but today, and only on today, I thought the team as a whole did OK. I could see what we were trying to do, I personally am not sure it works against a more packed defence but St Johnstone came to play against us today and that helped. We know we have players up front who lack composure, quality and consistency of output but by and large I thought we had purpose to our attack and a directness that wasnt just long ball. The wingers and midfield did seem more able to get around Danilo / Dessers and the link up back through middle to front was good. The passing was more crisp and there was a sense the players had been told just to be on the front foot. Nobody is fooled or ignoring the recent false starts but, we have to give this team and these players (some in particular) a chance while they are here. For some that might be longer term than others but if we get that commitment today and we can tighten up, add some quality but most importantly for me get some cohesion and stability in the match day squad we might just build something. I get some can’t forgive just yet but we can’t judge today and future games on how we feel about the last dozen. I am guilty of it so I know it’s not easy but think you have to acknowledge small improvements even if you don’t think they are enough long term. More good than bad in a 2-0 today for me.

Stephen

I worry about Jefte on the other side too. He looks great going forward but the old firm game might be a tough one for him defensively. I honestly think we should approach this game in the way the smaller teams play against us at Ibrox. Play it tight at the back and try and hit them on the break.

Stephen

He is dangerous until he releases the ball. Probably does cause a bit of chaos in the build up though

Heart and Hand

You’ve just agreed with me mate - you said nothing he does will change his opinion. That’s exactly what other people say about Dessers. You’re absolutely entitled to have that viewpoint about him by the way, not disagreeing but I don’t think you can then criticise others for feeling the same way about another player.

Stephen

I think Matondo gets a bit less criticism as you can see he has the potential to be really good. He is great at running with the ball at pace but a lot of the time his final ball lets him down. On the other hand he has shown in a couple big games (Celtic and Psv) that he can finish well. The problem is getting him to do both at the same time. So far he has been a let down but he definitely has the talent.

That UFO Podcast

Davie, you yourself have sat on MULTIPLE post match pods these last two seasons telling us the same players let us down, don’t turn up or aren’t good enough. “If he could” and insert “ just stay fit” “build confidence” etc is just actually “not good enough”, this cycle needs to stop

Spoon

Stephen I think in your comment lies the issue and Billy’s frustrations, ones which I share. Dessers IS delivering both goals and assists but is written of or joked about (not by David, not aimed at him at all) where other players like Matondo are given a pass based on potential but they arent actually delivering. Matondo is the Welsh Kent. Lots of nice stuff, bags of natural talent in there but while he might look on the cusp of delivering he just doesnt do it often enough or fill you will confidence that he is progressing. Some of the preference / prejudice comes down to what you like in a player. I am naturally more forgiving of grafters and those who put in effort than the talented who are perhaps a bit work shy or lazy. I like people who maximise what they have rather than (as I see it) coast on talent or worse dont maximise talent others dont even have! I agree with David that today I thought Matondo was a thorn in their side, direct, Lacey and did a lot to create chaos for others to exploit. I think Danilo and Dessers both benefitted from the dynamic front line and willingness of wingers to get in the box. I have been advocating for the striker to get more bodies around him and better service, today we saw some of that even though ultimately we were still a bit wasteful. Danilo more so than Dessers but I am willing to cut Danilo slack given his injury and time out, he can’t continue to be as wasteful though and stay clear of the criticism that Dessers gets, and the stats show he is far more clinical despite what the eye might tell some folk. I genuinely think today was a decent win, I think we can be happy with what we saw from the majority of the players who played. It wasnt perfect but guys like Matondo do contribute, Dessers did link and hold up fairly well and got his goal / assist. In general though the frustration for me is players not getting a level playing field or clean slate in games. Or worse narratives forming and people being unable to adapt to the reality of what develops. Matondo didn’t become great overnight, Dessers didn’t become a poster boy but I think both did contribute and deserve the credit given to them by the different contributors to this discussion. Good healthy chat is what it’s all about surely, we all love to talk Rangers and sell our views hoping we can get others to see what we see ? As always the chat on here is excellent and by and large fair, think theres good points made here and not sure they need to be zero sum. Did I mention how good my other favourite Souttar was ….. 👀 BTW Dessers has scored vs them and bar dodgy refs might well have scored in three of the games, think folk forget that.

Heart and Hand

Oh definitely, and I’d be happy to sell him. But until that happens we need to try to squeeze something out of him which the manager did today.

Heart and Hand

Dessers would be fine as an option, not having to play all the time. If we had other options to use as subs/certain games he’d be fine. It’s not his fault, that. The other night for example he was having a bad game. Fine, all players do, but because we had no other strikers he had to play on.

Heart and Hand

Best Souttar has played in months. THAT’S the guy who was at Hearts. Solid defending and great striding forward.

Billy Forrester

The same as you do with Dessers every week as he either creates or scores, Matondo doesn’t as he doesn’t get a start as manager doesn’t rate him, rightly so

Rona Bluebell

Better today. Glad to just have a win. Was worried David would turn into Edvard Munch’s The Scream if we didn’t. 😱 Onwards.

Kenneth Mackay

I’m sorry but the pointing stuff is nonsense. Grasping at straws and we should not indulge it. It wasn’t a foul. It was a goal. Accept and move on.

Heart and Hand

He certainly has never earned a regular shirt. But he was all right yesterday. We do need better though.

Think it's time everyone stops over analysing every single decision the manger makes every game. He's managing minutes and fitness of a squad that has no depth and was crippled with injuries not so long ago. He's trying to build something and keep the relationship positive beyween the team and fans. I like to be optimistic and I like PC and believe he is the manager for us. Fans seriously need to stop the over negativity towards PC. Of course we can raise concern and have opinions but people are over indulging in every single thing he does or says and creating a negative atmosphere around him when we should be backing him. I think starting danilo proves why dessers has been playing because right now he is our best striker and arguably our best player right now alongside barron. Danilo will take time to get up to speed and ss hard as it is for people to accept may never be any better than dessers. Loved barron and have liked him from start he'll be future captain one day I can feel it. We may be worse off as a squad from last season as we have lost experience and a couple of players who did provide quality a lot of the time . But I think we look quicker and so much more energetic. We are missing a bit cutting edge and quality. Hopefully we get a couple of signings and the squad continue to develop. RW is also a position I think we are now comfortable in. Cerny and mccasuland both look good and contributing. Matondo played well but again shows why he isn't good enough , his end product, final ball isn't there. Jefte looks promising but wasn't up against a dangerous winger so we'll see how he manages with that. But there are positive signs there we just need to keep building.

Billy Forrester

I agree however we appear to have no money so maybe he is the best we can get at moment. We need better in defence and midfield too but we can’t afford to do it so we go with what we got, we will win a lot of games and we will also frustrate us and lose a few, that’s the reality for now and with no money we cannot change it as u cannot polish a turd. A very good debate this has been, why I love heart and hand as u get great debates without people getting personal and becoming personal. 👍

Davie Brand

Didn't see the game yesterday, so good to hear Jefte played well because we're going to need him. Looks like he's got potential. Watp!! 🇬🇧🟥⬜🟦

Russ

Sorry but that made me laugh. For someone who's lightning over 10 yards Matondo has a bizarre reluctance to burn his fullback. It's probably his Man City education that's caused it imo.

Stace1ofthePeople

Fans can have opinions and rightly so but I just feel as though its turning into a furnace every time the manager speaks. Won't miss the presser but will definitely miss mid week football. Onto Saturday we go 🥳
