Martyn tries - with varying degrees of success - to convince David and Adam that criticism of the 2003 Champions League Final is wildly overdone as the boys look at that, how Ancelotti set up his Milanese Christmas Tree, the influence of Pavel Nedved and a false dawn for Italian football.

Dida then Dudek penalty saves. Not far off being a tackle

When is the next Murty show? I need cheering up.

Gents, slight tangent here but it’s Rangers related. The emergence of Pirlo and the deep lying playmaker is great to hear about, he was always one of my favourite players of the upcoming era (with Redondo the original trailblazer). Is it too simplistic to say our failure to replace Steven Davis has had a massive part in our failure in OF games since he was injured and then retired. We have no-one who can dictate tempo and break up attacks (which was always such an underrated quality of Davis, he was everywhere).

I had no idea that the Yugoslav league didn't allow draws, hence Red Star's approach to penalties in 1991. Can't believe 33 years have passed and it's the first time I've heard this. Brilliant series guys. Thanks

Think it was a trial for a few years and it was in the conversation a lot in the early nineties for all leagues, including ours.

It certainly hasn’t helped that we’ve not been able to replace that level of player for sure. Think there are so many factors going on though, some within our control, some not.

I’ve gotta say your version of history about Pirlo at Inter is a bit off. He was a ten at Brescia and was widely regarded at the heir to Baggio’s throne and only briefly played as a cdm there as they couldn’t accommodate both of them and it was expected he would go back to being a ten and would be a massive success. Granted he failed to perform and became on the greatest deep lying playmakers later that was unfathomable back then and it was seen as him and not the clubs nor countries failure.
