How bad are Clement’s tactics? On a scale of Pedro to Pep. How snookered are we with him at the wheel.

Russ

Didn't think his tactics were that bad on Sunday tbf, the principles were sound as evidenced by our start in the game. If we sort out our distances and fine tune our press we'd be a half decent side imo.

Russ

I think it was more that the heads dropped after the disallowed goal and they never came back up. That's the bigger problem for Clement than any tactical tweak - I've said it before, if I could rinse and purge our players brains I would. Deep psychological issues man. That Motherwell goal last season being the epitome of it.

Surely the issue is why is one guy being left to press game after game. If it’s not what the manager wants he isn’t stopping it, if he wants others to join the press why isn’t he telling them to, if he doesn’t like what he is seeing why isn’t he changing it ? If he does want this, we have problems. We get blinded that these guys who come in are automatically granted status beyond what we are seeing. Rank amateurs like me have seen enough football to tell what works in Scotland and what doesn’t, this set up with these players doesn’t work. I believe we could play in a set up and style that suits this squad better and get more out of it. I have grave doubts that Clement gets the game here, not that he is rubbish or clueless just he isn’t a fit here. He seems to be a fundamentalist using a system that fundamentally doesn’t work. Of course the signings and profile of player we keep being in continues to baffle and there are factors he can’t control, but he isn’t controlling the ones he can. The major red flag for us in recent years is our lack of player development or coaching. We ruin players we don’t make them better, the mythical time on the training pitch has produced the proverbial square root. Bassey and Paterson now seem to be the exceptions that prove the rule rather than the norm.

Interesting discussion guys enjoyed listening in 👏 hopefully we can see improvement 🤷‍♂️ it's hard to see at this point imo

Graeme Duncan

Great chat, lots of excellent points. Thanks guys.

So frustrating listening to you guys talking about the importance of Danilo,Igamane and Cortes getting a run of games whilst knowing that Danilo is out yet again and not even named in the Euro squad

Clementamdonte

Enjoyed that. Pressing and defensive structure is definitely the hardest thing for a layman to analyse. My instinct is that an aggressive press relies far more on individuals being good at it. Good 360 awareness of the full picture and quick reaction times. If they don’t have that then asking them to press aggressively is more likely to open up holes than it is to win the ball back. Whereas staying in shape/connected to a teammate or blocking an area feels much easier to coach bad defensive players into a good defensive team. I don’t think you can ever coach a Matondo for example to be an intelligent presser. It’s just going to break the structure. Wonder if the guys would agree?

The myth of Danilo outweighs the reality for me, the pressure on a guy who’s played a handful of games and showed nothing spectacular so far is incredible. I don’t dislike him or hope he fails, I hope he smashes it but it’s all based on faith for me and at best a tiny sample size of average return. He is the type of guy our league eats up and spits out, small, or particularly physical and now carrying an injury. The percentage game tells you he’s not the typical striker who excels here.

Spoon

Great comment and when you look across our league and the style of football you see that getting teams fit and having a solid shape is the foundation of most of the top to mid teams. Ironically it’s what we used to do while using our money to sprinkle in some gems, might work again if we actually tried it and stopped having desperation to be a disciple of the modern concept manager. Rut we seem stuck in. Even Gerrard had enough about him to bring the structure and steel while utilising the coaches for the sparkle. We used to see out games with 9 men now we can hardly cope with 11 on.

Tommy

What's clear from all debate and discussion after these games is that it's clear Clement has no more excuses

Yet to see Cerny go past anyone on the wing yet to be honest lads and I thought that was his thing along with cutting In on his left.

There isn’t really any myth - no one is saying anyone is definitely the answer. Danilo has 12 goals and assists from around 1000 minutes of football for Rangers. A goal or assist every 83 minutes. It’s a small sample size but it’s absolutely not average. Especially when you take into account his touch, movement and looking like he’d seen a football before prior to injury. (Adam)

Simon

So is your conclusion we sack him October and go again? This is the most accomplished manager we have appointed since Walter and if anyone deserves time, particularly the time Gerrard got, it’s Clement.

Ryan Stewart

I really struggle with Dessers as our number 9, particularly in games like the Celtic game. And I hate saying it because I don’t like singling players out and he seems like a top bloke. Our problems also go beyond any individual player. However, he looks like he would be an absolute dream to play against if you were a CB. Nice guy, doesn’t compete physically so can’t hold the ball up, doesn’t drop deep to either link play or leave space for others and doesn’t offer a threat in behind because he has no pace. His goal return is pretty good but his all around game limits us so much particularly when we step up a level. For me if you’re going to offer as little as he does in general play, I need 40 goals a season not 20

Great to hear this analysis. I always feel the common denominator to failings , is dynamic fitness . Until the defence , middle, and forward players , of the team , have comparable speed , endurance , agility, and basic strength . Results against them , will be predictable.

2 rather sobering (terrifying) pods. Were a mess and the Wilson then Beale transfer windows have put us on the back foot and I’m not sure the last couple of windows have been any better 🥴

Graeme Homer

The Edozie deal was dependent on Hagi and/or Matondo leaving with interest in both of them at the last minute going by some of the chatter online. The system I think will work once Clement has the players he wants fit like Danilo, Cortes, Igamane, Bajrami. Instead of having to rely on Dessers, Lawrence etc. I’m also glad he didn’t jump in and do a Ten Haag and sign a Casemiro after not getting De Jong and be more like Klopp and Slot and you either get you man or you hold of and await for him or someone who is actually like him then anybody.

David

I’ve just listened this pod a month down the line and I think we’re still seeing many of the same injuries. Issues with injuries to the same players and the way we play. We’re not caught in this cycle with team management, very depressing. Defence is playing relatively well if that’s a bonus.
