Aberdeen 2-1 Rangers Postmatch Reaction 30 Oct 2024

Another dismal away day for Rangers.

Comments

John Breen

Tavs not just on a downward slide. He’s at the rock bottom trying to scramble upward

Gary campbell

Dessers is also hiding behind opposition cbs now

Steff Clarke

I was just missing the days of Morelos getting pointlessly sent off, at least that was entertaining.

Jim Milne

RE: Tavernier. We got a corner that didn't make it into the box, he then crossed it back in another twice all within 45 seconds and none of the 3 made the middle of the box. Then a few minutes later we had a throw in, 1 down and Tav trots over and tells sterling to slow down when Sterling went to take a quick throw in. That's our captain! He sets the standards. I said I'd back him, but after his post match interview it's hard to support a manager who says it's basically the best we've played all season. Clueless and rudderless on and off the field.

Elaine Campbell

The club and its expectations are too big for Clement I'm afraid. He has zero idea what we are about and what we expect. It's utterly depressing and demoralising

Daniel Ward

That’ll be tavs 6 permanent manager he’s outlived. Clement needs gone but tavernier should be paid up to piss off

John Breen

How lucky were we to have him. Now he’s gone it’s easier to appreciate him

Iain McKay

I think Clement should go, tonight he looked to me like a guy who knows he's gone. The problem is that I think any manager that comes in will probably struggle too, the team on the pitch reflects the malaise throughout the club. Team and club as a whole is leaderless, rudderless and devoid of any dynamism. We're in the same state as Man Utd down south. No manager is going to succeed until the core issues that run throughout the entire institution are addressed.

Jim Milne

If he's staying for a testimonial I seriously can't see anyone buying a ticket.

Martin Sutherland

Spot on, David. I think some sort of combination of Davis/Thomson is required. The season is a right off. This gets the fans off the board’s back and once we appoint the relevant people we can recruit for a new manager who can get a fresh start next season. Aberdeen have done similar to us recently and kept appointing mid season. Last season they wrote it off and brought someone in for the new season and its paid off.

John Smith

The board should already have a plan in place for our next manager. Interviews should’ve getting arranged as we speak

Fraser86

My thoughts are I'd we bring in a temp manager we may have tonsack him also because this team is is poor as can be

Taryn

Not a regular commenter on this, but wow. Absolutely disgusted at that. There has to be a change. It's simply not working.

Christopher paterson

It resonates when David says it’s not up to us to have the solutions as fans but we have no trust in those we entrust our club to and that is players management and board - but it feels like the status quo is no longer an option

Christopher paterson

As a foot note I watched the game in the city centre tonight and stepped off a train heading in the same direction as the other side of the city- this is no longer our city in any sense of the words I’m going with revolution not evolution

Gary campbell

A think going forward ur spot on Lovelace igmane and one other has to be front 3 need pace and power

Paul Williamson

We have a selection of players , certainly not a team, who look like they have been recruited by an accountant. He’s coaching them too, judging by the performances.

Fraser Black

That’s two games running where he’s been called out on live TV for staying at the back post when a cross is coming in. At one point he was nowhere to be seen when Bajrami was at the byeline. He is without doubt one of the main reasons why this formation can’t continue.

jason hart

Davie spot on with every point a very honest raw reality check I wasn't in favour of muscat 12 mths ago but his style may be what we need .. these players need a rock up there @rse and not a tactical overload .. I believe the Japanese league concludes next week so timing may be right League is gone but valuable and much need money 💰 on offer in Europe.. these players aren't playing for PC now and aren't capable domestically and certainly not in Europe

james whyte

Davis, Defoe and Warnock for a giggle. Can't be worse. Oh, and I mean Defoe as Dessers replacement.

Gary campbell

Spot on m8 he’s also horrific for just falling down when a cb leans on him and a think he’s scared to hit it first time

Colin Mathie

Not sure i'd want Davis in either, even on a temp basis.

East Enclosure

Would our rivals manager drop the best performing full back for a big game like this cause the fitness analyst said the laptop suggests he needs a rest?, PC isn’t thinking of football in a Rangers context.

Graham Jones

I appreciate what you’re saying but sacking him is digging us into an even bigger financial hole, and I’m not sure we can trust this board to make an adequate appointment in his place. The centre of all the problems with the team come from the boardroom, and after a defeat, any defeat but especially against that shower then supporters become blinded to the whole picture. We focus in on the dug out, when the reality is that the damage was done a long time ago in the boardroom by men who have left the building. Park, Bennet, Bisgrove and Wilson were the ones who shaped the way we are in, and we need someone to come in and provide leadership. I can only think of one person, and the board won’t’ do it.

Peter Hosie

Steven Davis would be utter madness.

Gary B

It's the arrogance in persevering with a formation that doesn't work that annoys me more than anything.

David adams

I’ve tried to stay positive for so long but I’m losing the will to live every time I have to listen to his post match nonsense, it’s time to go Phil !

Greig Ward

Agree with everything you said David. I wasn’t shocked we got beat because anytime this Rangers team has had to get a result domestically since we won 55 bar the semi final against them under gio we always absolutely shite the bed. The team tonight was weak in every department. Tav should have been subbed in the first half after an Aberdeen player went past him in the box and he literally just gave up and looked like he was punch drunk. The fact our 4.5m midfielder Diomande the boy that’s supposedly gonna make us millions sat on the bench alongside the master of the dark arts Proper says it all. To rub salt into the wounds listening to Clements interview after the game just made things even worse. He honestly thought that was one of our best performances this season, for that reason alone he should be emptying his desk tomorrow morning.

Peter Hosie

Yes the ball was cut back to the edge of the box with no player in the camera and you’re thinking where the fk are you, then eventually he appears but it’s far too late

James Kenny

I had to get a train from Glasgow Central tonight at 10:30, station full of the green and grey and a train lost of shettelston's. They really must believe that they play in a one team league, which is essentially the rd facto situation now

Heart and Hand

I’d say perseverance with this shambles is madness. Doesn’t have to be Davis, but a caretaker till summer. Aberdeen did similar last year and got the guy they wanted rather than someone who happened to be available.

James Kenny

The truth is that we now operate in what is a one team league. We now fall in with the dross. Players telling telling the manager they're tired! I just can't identify with these frauds, a fair few who aren't fit to wear our jersey. I genuinely feel for the fans who travelled north.

Tamus

Any manager who persists with the coward James Tavernier will end up sacked

Tamus

He still has many Fanboys out there who will queue up to pay homage and thank him for all the title

Jimmy Price

Just watched the manager post match. WTF is he talking about!? I’m at the point where I just can’t watch him anymore. He’s gaslighting the f**k out of the Rangers support!

GM

Not sure how much more I can stomach watching Tavernier. There was a moment he tried to shield the ball on the touchline from Duk and before he was even close, you KNEW he was going to take it from him. He did so and created an opportunity from it. Countless examples of poor play, major part in the winning goal. It’s enough now.

John Dunn

Problem with sacking Clement is the only people I trust less at the club are the board. We are in such a sorry state. I think the manager has been dealt a bad hand with downsizing and the mess behind the scenes but I just don’t see a path forward with him anymore.

Craig Newton

Just sheer apathy at this point unfortunately 😒

Robert Cameron Murray

Would rather someone like Kevin Thomson as caretaker manager, Knutsen would be a shout long term, Graham Potter although it’s maybe Harry Potter with his invisible cloak and magic wand we need

chris smith

The ‘cant afford to sack the manager’ line really makes no sense. If Clement continues, Rangers are going to lose than money anyway from fan disengagement and finishing 3rd/4th with the knock on implications for Euro qualification next season

Ranger1972

Bigger financial hole? What about the financial impact of finishing 3rd? He’s got to go, it’s as simple as that.

Bryan Scott

If you’re calling for someone to come in till the end of the season, why not just leave clement in charge. It’s his team, so let him die on his sword, who’s to say a caretaker will get anything better out the squad

Simon

Yeah, changed my opinion completely. Before the game I wanted to break the annual change of manager ritual. I gave him the benefit of doubt. Get him out Sharon.

Billy Forrester

Totally agree with nearly everything however Steven Davis cannot be placed in temporary charge. The reasons are simple, he is mates with a lot of them and he wouldn’t have the balls to do what is required, drop Tav, not use mcausland, who does not have the quality or the brain required to play for us, Balogun is a bomb scare also yet the fans have u believe he is Maldini. My team subday would be this , Butland, Sterling, Souttar, Kasanwirjo, Jefte, Barron, Raskin, bajrami, Cerny, igamane, Lovelace 433 We need to try something else and keep trying until something works as if we don’t we will finish at best 3rd this season with no cups and a constantly half empty Ibrox. KT with someone like Neil mcann alongside him till end of season then go all out for Mcinnes, it’s time to stop with foreign duds who don’t get our weird little league Fed up beyond belief but I guess we all are.

CJT

No permanent chairman, no CEO, no semblance of an Exec team, no discernible evidence there is a long-term strategy. Top that with a poor recruitment over multiple years resulting in no real captain, no real centre back, no real number 6 and a striker who couldn’t possibly be less suited to the role he’s been asked to play. Sorry, sorry state. Said before a new manager on its own won’t change things. There’s more to it and I’d rather we make the right choice when the other structural elements are in place. However the form since March should see a Rangers manager removed. It’ll happen because fans will force it now. I have to say though I have absolutely no confidence those charged with the responsibility will get it right. Desperate stuff. Heard some say it can’t get worse. We all know it can. Consequences of that terrify me.

Sgems90

Managers been cooked for a while now, he’s only part of the issue though as the squad is piss poor. So the next man coming in is also going to have a tough time of it.

David Innes

Falling 9 points behind Aberdeen should be a sacking offence for any Rangers manager. The ‘standards’ we the fans expect the club to adhere to now only exist in our own imaginations.

Nikky Cairney

Great pod guys. Have been saying for couple of months he has to go and most people are finally waking up to how bad Clement and his football is. The end to last season was alarming and his comments after the Dundee draw in April set alarm bells ringing. Since then we’ve had Sterling, Butland and Balogun say the exact opposite to him in post match interviews which shows they aren’t all on the same page. Pre season was a joke. Many played it down saying it was only pre season as Birmingham passed us off the park. Season started badly at Tynecastle and Kiev but even in victories our performances weren’t there. His comments post Celtic pointing to the Ross County win being the best in years up until last night and his “only a toe nail offside stopped it being 2-2” and telling us it was one of the best performances this season. Along side every interview him referencing new players whilst the team we played last night has more new players starting than us. His tactics and subs are of amateur level. He hasn’t improved a single player in a year and id happily debate that with anyone. The man is a a complete fraud and he’s hiding behind off field issues. The board don’t continually pick Tav. The board didn’t hang their hopes on Dessers as our main number 9 despite there being interest in him. The board don’t play the same long balls week in and week out. The board don’t play 4231 with no wingers available and never change it up. The board are failing us and it needs sorted. But no one can tell me that another manager can’t improve us with the squad of players we have. Clement was quick to point to budgets when Lyon pumped us yet he’s up against teams like Aberdeen and Killie who are further away budget wise than we are to Lyon. Anyone still backing him needs their head checked. I’d love to hear a valid argument as to why he should stay. Get him out.

C. J

We’ve been crap for 4 years. The same hit & hope football, the system has been diabolical. Ange came up here and won the league for a laugh, we never learned a thing from him.

Billy Forrester

He has been given more resources and tools than any other SPL manager apart from that lot and we are no better than any other team in the league, he is a dud who cannot coach or galvanise players and any SPL manager with the resources and squad clement has could get more from this team, he is worse than Pedro

Hamish Rankin

Couldn’t agree more, our problems are much deeper than the manager. The club is in a state of disarray. I’m genuinely worried about it all. I don’t see a realistic way out of it all. We’re in so deep

Glen Kane

At this stage I'd take Martindale. I'm at the "it can't get any worse time" which seems to arrive every October. Sub 25k crowds on the way as apathy sinks in.

CJT

In the old days you could buy your way out. FFP limitations on investment, spend and more critically wages make that impossible. The rules are effectively built to keep the top teams at the top to my mind rather than protecting clubs from collapse. Why we see the same teams winning every year across Europe with the odd surprise. Anyway, ti manage that it’ll be a long slog and need real leadership. As a support we’re not built for the long term and leadership is non existent. Worrying.

Rona Bluebell

It’s beyond depressing. We need visionary CEO to do a revolution

Rose Mcloughlin

Thanks David its so hard for you to come on this and talk when the rest of us want to hide under a duvet...my final nail in the coffin was when Clement said this was a good team performance..I no longer want to hear what he has to say...we need to change our manager but I wont hold my breath.

Calum Downham

8 out the 11 that started last night were signed before Clement = not a rebuild (which is what the board promised) Once again we have a manager who is the fall guy for a clueless inept board. They had the blueprint for success with Gerrard and even with Gio but they’ve decided to wreck the club beyond all recognition. Utter disgrace shit show we are

David Innes

I think a mutual parting of the ways is the most likely outcome but we might need to wait until the new CEO comes in. Clement will be aware his stock is rapidly sinking and I don’t think he’ll want finishing 3rd in a 2 team league on his CV

Alastair Thomson Mills

The Morning after the night before. I asked for Clements head after match yesterday evening but in cold light of day? No way he’s getting sacked today. The board will give him semi final. If he wins that he keeps his job until next league disaster and that will be that. The Nine Million loan will need to become a 13 Million loan. 2 Mil to pay Clement off and 2 Mil to entice a decent manager. I know it’s pie in the sky. The stark truth is we can’t afford to get rid of him. But once Ibrox empties before home games? The Board will have to listen. Surely? Thanks David. Every word you utter makes sense.

Billy Forrester

Clement signings sitting on bench not starting, 4.3 million diomande, 1.7 mil Igamane, 1.5 mil Propper, Jefte, that’s on Clement, he has been backed and given funds we could ill afford and he has spent it on mediocre players who he doesn’t trust to start, that’s not the board, that’s on manager

Grant

Can someone help me out?? Why does managers past successes not translate to success with Rangers? For example Gio, feyenoord and clement with Genk and Brugge. There is clearly something there in both of them. Second to that, both Beale and Clement looked the part when they first took over arguably more than just a ‘new manager bounce’ but both fall off a cliff from the start of the new season. Why?? These are patterns that id appreciate if anyone had opinions about. I’ve no idea! It seems there is no point in bringing in a manager with past successes and nobody wants a ‘project manager’ with exception of Stevie G probably because he’s Stevie G. What’s the point in changing manager just to rinse and repeat.

Granters

I had a glimmer of hope for Clement until last night. Last night was just too much for me; the starting lineup (suddenly deciding out of nowhere that Jefte needs a rest - WTF!?), persisting with Tav when there are 2 other options for that position and the whole world can see Tav is done, persisting with Dessers up front, the baffling subs, the stubborn wedding to 4-2-3-1 that we just don’t have the players for. And then that post-match interview. Where to even start? It was just Bealeism again; trying to tell us we’re not seeing what we patently are seeing. He’s done, i’m afraid.

Calum Downham

Nils Koppen signings are on the manager? I’m not trying to say that Clement is blameless, but if you look at the bigger picture, the DOF is appointed by the board If the DOF is a diddy (we have a track record) then that’s down to the board for squandering millions on rubbish… again. Rangers problems lie much deeper than simply just a managerial change

Simon Botterill

Completely different environment. Rangers and Scotland is very unique. It's why Europe is relatively successful under PC and almost the pinnacle under Gio. Domestic league is completely different and both Gio and PC can't or will not adapt. For Gio it must have been very odd, being a player with Rangers, with us on top or at least having some balance and control within the environment to an utter circus when he returned.
