Personally I think we definitely need a few more Scottish players, we definitely need a striker and another defender in my opinion

Graeme Homer

On the strikers the budget only allows for three and Beale placed the majority wages available on Dessers and Danilo, meaning we could get a project player realistically. We have tried to ship Dessers in the last two windows and accepted bids and if he left he would have been replaced and hopefully someone again bids for him and he leaves to allow us to get someone else in. Although once Danilo is fit and the jobbers of the SPFL don’t snap him again, he will be good enough to be the starter and Igamane and whoever else whether that’s Dessers or a new guy to support him. I think wingers is the most important position to focus on and then a CB should be looked at as Propper isn’t good enough, Balogun and can’t be relied on due to age and fitness and the youths aren’t ready yet. Nana seems to be consider a RB or utility man, however I think he should be trusted to be the guy to be Souttar’s long term partner. I’m hoping we try again to get rid of the guys that haven’t made it like Matondo, Ridvan, Propper, Dessers and get a few really good players in and give McKinnon, Lovelace, Rice, Curtis, Gentles, Fraser and Wylie the chance to fill the void.

Greg

Haven't listened yet but surely no one dares to suggest shankland

Martin Sutherland

Danilo will be first choice come Jan. That will make it easier to punt Dessers and get another player in

Gazza G

The biggest loss of the window was sima imo as non qualification for the CL scuppered that move. You could argue that his injury cost us the league as he was flying at the time.

Gazza G

Interesting debate guys. Good listen. McLean would have been a fine addition but age/fee/wages not right. And he would have eaten into Barrons minutes and thus development. Does anyone trust that Koppen/ Clement know the player attributes required to succeed here yet?

Glyn Davies

The armchair manager in me feels that Shankland is still worth a shot, should get him relatively cheap in Jan on a pre contract.....get Danilo fit & punt Dessers, use Igamane as a project & build towards next season for him, watching his few cameos I'd say he seems more comfortable drifting out wide than through the middle so maybe he isn't ready to be deployed as a striker yet? I would also like to see us cash in on Matondo & use the money to bring in another winger who is a bit more robust as the jury is definitely still out on Cortez until he can get fit & have a sustained run in the team......I think Lennon Miller would be out of reach financially this Jan so could we make a move for David Watson at Killie to reinforce the MF options?

Spoon

I would take Shankland, he brings far more than just being a 9. Of our other strikers the only one we have, regardless of the froth, who scored is Dessers. I would punt Danilo who is tiny and has hardly kicked a ball and keep Dessers as the squad player, I am basically bored of being browbeaten around Dessers, the guy contributes and in a better system, with support he is at least proven. I don’t want guys who spend much more time on the bench than on the field like Danilo. He has cost a fortune so far and delivered very little. Igmane looks ok but nothing special, how he develops in this set up carrying the whole weight of the attack will be interesting, supporting him with a second striker would be better for his development for me. As a general rule I want us to buy local and buy resilient players suited to our league. Couldn’t care less about Europe until domestic trophies become the norm so don’t care about recruiting guys who suit that small aspect of the season, that’s been a distraction to us. I am happy short term to take the money and build but the focus has to be domestic. From the transfer business to date I am concerned that our transfer policy still seems obsessed with Hail Mary plays and not taking the solid percentage shot. I would rather focus on local talent than these foreign projects and interest the reliance on loans. A loan to buy fine, but for me loans just kick a problem down the line, it’s lazy transfer business. My priority would be the same as the names we were linked with in the summer, a Kenny Maclean type player, Shankland and Lennon Miller. By local, buy mentally and physically resilient guys and restore our identity both in terms of style of play and being the top Scottish club. There are lots of decent prospects across the team and decent calibre guys we have brought in but I want our Scottish core and ethos back asap I’m done with tactical snobbery or celebration to be a modern club. Back to basics, a work ethic, some steel and use our resources to have a few guys who have that bit of flair to push us above the pack. We have lots of foreign lads who still have a bit of the Scottish mentality about them ie Raskin with dig, Jefte with dig and industry, Bajrami with a great engine, bit of flair etc these guys are great but we need more of them and a switch in set up / tactics for me.

Genuine question, based on what ? From what I see he is the new Roofe. The boy is tiny and so far out more than in. Has he been value for £6m ? I get you might prefer him to Dessers but the boys career has been nothing but bang average in a technical league, he hasn’t shown much here despite his cheerleaders than not being called Dessers.

Martin Sutherland

Nothing like Roofe. Younger and doesn’t have a history of injuries. He got a terrible injury, had a relapse and is now back training/playing. He’s played 900 odd minutes for us, which is about 10 games and has 7 goals/4 assists. Is he the best finisher we’ve ever had? No. But he is a good player who will be a big step up from the current choices. He became first choice prior to his injury and I believe Clement will do the same when he’s full fit. Just my take of course.

Spoon

Respect your view of course and I take the argument on board but I dont believe he has ever been first choice or cemented the place as his own, his pre injury form was patchy at best. Regardless of his injury history you’re correct he has played about 10 games for us and given his fee and wage I don’t see it as value for money. At previous clubs he has never been a main striker and in our league his physicality will be an issue to me. Roofe didn’t start out his career as a perma injured guy but he certainly struggled to ever be fit. Alarm bells ring for me when a guy can’t get or stay fit after an injury, it’s sad but the reality is in a 4 year contract he has missied almost half of the time we paid for unavailable or not at his peak. You might be absolutely right but I think a lot of projection goes into the guys not in the starting line up of hope more than reality. I also think his height and build doesn’t help him but I may well eat my words. Absolutely respect your position and my opinion is just my own view I just don’t think in recent years we have bought the right type or profile of striker, ironically of all the guys we bought I rated Colak the highest and wish we had given the boy a chance. A lot of my issue with any striker we play stems from no confidence in one up front domestically, I think in our league to properly ask questions of packed defences you need two up. Let’s hope I’m dead wrong and you’re dead right, enjoyed the chat bud.

Martin Sutherland

In terms of physicality, the best striker in the league is about 10 stone. In his limited minutes he’s impressed me. His movement, link up play and finishing has been decent. Has a burst of pace as well. The injury may be the deciding factor but if fit, I think he’ll do well for us. Obviously with the fee he has been a complete failure to date. But that’s not on his ability. Two freak injuries in normal circumstances would be seen as unlucky, but because we have so many it becomes part of the bigger issue at Rangers and players are blamed. Roofe was prior to joining us but Danilo and Lawrence, for example, have been ones we potentially handled poorly. PC didn’t seem too impressed with our processes when he first joined.

John Smith

Hugo Bolin from Malmo is a player I’d be looking at

Spoon

Martin, again fair comment but not sure the comparison in style with their boy holds up, we are using a system that demands hold up and someone to single handedly occupy a defence just don’t see it with Danilo and his finishing from my own mk1 eyeball wasn’t any more clinical than what we have. They on the other hand have a set up to maximise his quick movement and he is just a better finisher, although that applies all over their team. If you have a car that’s had some issues and your chasing repairs and throwing in money there comes a point where you just get it driveable and get rid. Otherwise you run the risk of never getting back what it owes you. Given our injury record and as you point to our apparent inability to rehabilitate a player and bring them back anyone with a serious injury I would punt and not chase the loss, that’s my personal view nothing more. My point remains we overspent and overpaid for a guy who I don’t think suits our league or system. Ultimately I think the foreign guys get polarised support half get labelled foreign diddies and half get over egged with praise, ultimately for me I’m bored of chasing exotic world talent at the expense of ignoring the domestic market. As I say I can see your point I just don’t see it that way or agree. All the best.

Spoon

Excellent pod gents, solid sensible comment, like Stevie I want an end to “foreign nonsense” the domestic form and trophy haul against our local signings for me isn’t a coincidence. I just can’t buy into our chad valley scouting system finding the hidden gem every other club has missed, we will get the odd serviceable player but the risk v reward is skewed and when we have very limited funds we need to be going for bankers and incremental gains.

Gordon Mac

Really enjoyed that, great idea for a pod 😀 👍

Callum

The players we missed out on in the summer was partially driven by the need to wait to move players on first. Golden, Davies and Cantwell moved after the season started… so finding players that teams will let go right at the end of the window, at the right place is always going to be a struggle. Is Kasanwijro available to buy or loan only? Love his calmness and that versatility is priceless in terms of squad building. More like that leaves us with a smaller squad and more space for young lads to come through.

Glyn Davies

Spot on with your points although I'm slightly less convinced on the Dessers point.....but as they say you can only piss with the cock youve got.......by all means if we could get back the money we paid for Danilo I'd not be overly fussed if he went either, in my head I'd still want to see a few players gone in January let alone next summer......I bang on about Shankland because he can score the goals we are not scoring, the bread & butter goals in the SPFL, he can hold the ball up, he can bully opposition players & for me none of our current strikers can do all 3! Dessers blows hot & cold, his touch can be atrocious (look at the one yesterday when Jefte drove up the park & played to Dessers in the box).....his touch is honking & it breaks down again 🙈 he needs to stop this rolling about looking for fouls constantly too, he spends more time pleading with refs over stuff he will never get in Scotland & if he doesn't realise by now that the refs in Scotland won't give you anything if you wear royal blue than there is no hope for the big guy! Honest, big lad & I'm sure he is an absolute gentleman off the park but I want to see him find his inner bastard & start snarling & roaring instead of smiling & being all nicey nicey........I do agree we need to reinforce CM, i mentioned shifting Matondo, id also try & get Dowel off the payroll in January to free up wages for a CM as knowing our luck the only shining light on the park at the mo is the Raskin/Barron MF & were one injury away from that being halted.......

Spoon

I think a lot of times it might seem I am arguing Dessers is my choice, it’s not my intent. What I rail against is him being branded a dud or the wider failures in the team being missed by the obsession some have around him. He’s the Trump to Rangers media CNN or ABC, ie he gets all the focus and blame while people ignore the real issues. With better striker would it alleviate some of the issues, of course but the club has shown no interest in getting another striker, it could be questioned do we actually have the funds to get the type of striker we need for the system we are wedded to and ultimately my point is I don’t believe he is as bad as some (not all) make out. He is limited yes, he can frustrate but for me the others who have briefly come in haven’t shown up significantly better in this system. I blame how we set up and play more than any player we have currently. Even those with flaws could be helped by getting more structure and support around them, that’s on the manager. While hours of pods, inches of columns or a cascade of comment on forums can be expended on Dessers my point remains it’s a distraction and a let off for others. We have guys in the team who contriibute about the same or less, who have mistakes in them but get away far more lightly than he does. It absolutely doesn’t make him better but everything you can say about the boy has been said, at this point it just feels like trolling or bullying him. Thankfully he seems mentally resilient or sections of our support would have levelled the boys confidence. While we fail to support the 9 properly, Im loathe to blame anyone playing there overly for anything fitter than zero output. ig had a chance and last time out looked isolated, Danilo has had touches but has also looked isolated in his very brief appearances. More worrying for Danilo is his fitness, another guy who we have seen very little in return for our outlay, a lot of faith is projected into him simply for not being Dessers, so he must be better, he is certainly worth trying to see if he can improve the front line, it that would rely on him being available. Likeable, decent and good aren’t enough to keep Dessers. If this system is our system (wouldn’t be mine) he will not do a job, especially as it seems few others can score consistently either. I get the calls for him to be moved on and I can see the logic but while he is here I refuse to buy into the nonsense about him being crap, or can’t do X or he doesn’t score in big games rubbish it’s lazy and just not true. By the way I acknowledge my own bias because Clement is in exactly the same boat as Dessers for me where I am struggling to see anything good in what he does and I am waiting for or focused on his mistakes to confirm my already held opinions! That second half yesterday shows how hard we make things for a 9. Expecting them to plough a lone furrow, take all the weight of goal scoring and runs from 20 yards deeper than you would want at set defences is enough to trouble all but the best, and we can afford the best. I blame the manager for not helping Dessers, for not playing Bajrami in his proper position, for leaving Dio to look like a bit of a crisp pole blowing about, for not giving the defence a chance to settle and build relationships, for not using Sterling enough or Nana, or Lovelace or Fraser etc people can focus on Dessers, rightly so but to hear some he’s the root of all evil, I just don’t think he is half as bad as people make out, his flaws are there but nowhere near as deep as many would have you believe and in my own circle of friends I talk football with most aren’t as vehement about him as lots on there’s forums or pods.

Glyn Davies

First of all.....love the DjT reference 🤙.......I strongly agree the manager is the main issue, like a few before him he is overly reliant on certain players & is not willing to try & change the tactics or set up when things are not working! I don't mind the manager having his "philosophy" but he must be flexible & be able to adapt in certain situations! Look at yesterday, we start well & score early.....Hearts where terrible & we just seem to lack a killer instinct domestically, from 20 mins onwards we just sat off Hearts & allowed them to grow into the game when they where for the taking early on & comfortable 3 or 4 nil ho.w win would of done wonders for club, player & fan morale! Why not go for 2 up top or play a more Gerrard like narrow front 3 with a more compact MF? That would surely give Dessers more support & Cerny & Bajrami could be dragging defenders around to free up space for Dessers? The Nana/Sterling issue for me needs to be handled, IMO Tav is done & hinders us more than helps us now......Get Sterling or Nana in at RB & stick with it, Tav can contribute from the bench with 20/30 mins to go at best as he doesn't have the legs for it anymore......I'm not going to go on about Tav in detail but the rebuild should of began with him & we will not improve whilst he is being selected more often than not.......& if Clement is determined to play this 4,2,3,1 whilst we have the likes Cortez, Ridvan & Matondo on the injury table then why don't we move Jefte up one, play Kasinwirjo at LB & move Bajrami into the 10.......that would surely give is a better balance & certainly a bit more explosiveness in the final third with Jeftes pace & drive........there is sooooo much we could do with what we have at our disposal but ultimately the managers stubbornness to stick to his guns will be his undoing

Spoon

Glyn, spot on mate disagree with very little of what you say. If we can see this why can’t he ? You have voiced exactly my frustration. While we get distracted with individuals we miss the wider issue, not that players not performing shouldn’t be called out but at times it’s OTT for me and it simplifies what is a nuanced and more complex issue. Between windows we have what we have and need to make the most of it, what we have is also of far better quality than most others so to me it’s simple logic that we look for gains with what we have and maximise output. I’m not convinced we are actually coaching the team currently as much as picking the best (or fit/available/easy) 11 and hoping it works. That’s not good enough, My own preference would to to go 442 get two up front and as you say go slightly more compact in the middle, even if we went 4312 domestically with Bajrami in his favoured role it would make more send to me. We need more bodies in the box, we need more craft from the midfield to make chances. Strikers will miss and we can of course revisit how clinical our strikers are when we properly feed them. I just think some reality needs to be found about where we are, how we are creating chances, what type of chances we create and if these suit our personnel. Maybe I’m totally wrong Danilo gets fit and goes on a med scoring run as a tiny solo striker, it could happen, wouldn’t bet on it though.

Glyn Davies

Spoon, yeah we seem to be on the same wave length with our frustrations........I could go on & on about all the things that frustrate me, one example......lack of pace in the final third, why can't Clement mix it up a bit? I like Bajrami & Cerny, but they don't have pace over distance so can he not push Jefte up one & play Nana at LB or even take a gamble & throw a Robbie Fraser for example on for 20 mins to try stretch teams in the SPFL? As we agree there is good players but they don't suit PC set up & I have zero trust in Matondo or Cortez to fox that problem in the near future as both appear to be made of chocolate & can't go more than 3 games before they are out for 3 months (hence I would cash in on Matondo at the first opportunity).
