Good pod ! Ryan speaks really well. Definitely should be on more pods on the network.

The inverted winger tactic is abysmal In Scotland you need positive flying wingers that get after full backs Play to your strengths it’s poor coaching to expect wingers all there days to all a sudden be dangerous on the flank they have never played A wish a could tell the manager to fuck it off it’s horrible and doesn’t work in spfl

He will be on this weeks transfer show with me. But let’s not make his head bigger 😃

Jim Milne

I agree Chris. I would rather have had Adam Devine play at right back, and let Yilmaz and Jefte fight out the left back position. It's one thing to play players out of position for say the Celtic game because of the need for experience as well, but Sterling and Claudio Reyna are the only players I remember that were so versatile. It rarely ever works for any player in any position, more than a game or so.

Stuart Mowat

Always enjoy and respect your pods, but disappointed to hear you dismiss our European form as simply "the players over the past 7 years are able to get up for that". It's somewhat disrespectful to the quality managers and tactical performances we have delivered and also ignores the fact that Clement has a relatively young team performing really well in big games. It's not as simple as just being up for it. The biggest problem (for all of these managers) is/was away form. Dismissing our positives and only higlighting our negatives feels like you are creating a narrative, albeit that may be simply subconscious bias. Despite our outrageously poor trading model and what hes been left to work with this season we are in 8th (and 3pts off 3rd) in the Europa, top of the SPFL Home table, arguably should have retained a trophy and we have recently humped our rivals with a team who's average age was 3-4 years younger than theirs. A celtic team who have the added advantage of having played for years together. But yes, we have poor away form. I think many are missing the fact that there are people who see these positives as hope for the future and also the possibility of fixing the away form (rather than finding yet another manager) its clear we need more depth and to find the right way to play teams who have learned to be excellent at the low block. I personally believe we either need more experienced players to hold leads and manage games or give time and experience to youth. So let's recognise the issue, the impact injuries had on those away results, the difference between playing home then away every week rather than 4/5 away games during the congested winter break (absolutely no coincidence in that nor the fact we play away from home after every SPFL OF fixture this season even parkhead). Perhaps understanding those small and significant circumstances will lead us to start to supporting the team (including the manager) rather than simply second guess when Stewart will sack him.

Kevin Muscat would lead us to glory under the right structure. I dont want him to come in when the foundations aren’t right. Maybe it was a blessing he didn’t get the job at that time of instability

Ryan McMillan

The hibs game summed up why he’ll never take us forward domestically. I didn’t say he’s a bad manager, he’s just not the right fit for us. He doesn’t want to create sides who are patient with the ball, which is fine if you play in an open league (Belgium) or a mid-table side. However, Rangers are neither & only really benefit from this in Europe. So much of the modern game is ‘Horses For Courses’. It’s why Moyes flopped with Utd, but won a Euro trophy with West Ham. It’s why Kompany got Burnley relegated, but could win the Bundesliga with Bayern. When we look to a replacement for Clement down the line, relativity has to be a key factor in the recruitment process.

Stuart Mowat

Appreciate differing opinions and taking the tine to respond. My understanding of Clement, which excited me at the time, was that he was hailed for his tactical flexibility. He was able to adapt depending on the team in Belgium. What we are seeing now is the emerging ability to play the way we have at home and v bigger opposition. Granted its not as consistent as we'd like but if there is a major issue with young players it's consistency. Thats why our patience is imperative I do believe he is building something and the away results will come, after all it's defensive frailties that cost in all of those games not middle to front or a patient approach. Its no coincidence that with Barron instead of Raskin we struggle. So away from home I personally disagree that patient football is the answer. In fact we are starting to look really good in transition, our decision making needs to improve but we are regularly creating overloads and decision making improves with... experience. We are also creating chaos chances in the box and trying to play through the middle as well as out wide. Our wingers are being played in both wide to either cross or push into the box and with through balls down channels into the box. Lots of variety. The issue has been defensive calamities that lost us these points, not a lack of patience or middle to front. A mental challenge from Butland. Pen. Propper heading against a players arm, a slip from sterling, a penalty that should never have been. We've lost 2 identical goals from corners v hibs and St Johnstone because we cant defend v big strikers or CBs.. Before Souttar was injured we had him as our potential POTY and I don't see us losing half of thes goals with him and Balogun in defence. We don't have depth, get the defence sorted again and we will see away results improve.

Ryan McMillan

That’s fine if you’re chasing a goal, but you have to have a maturity when you’re a couple of goals up. David Gray said (& it showed in his tactics) that if he closed up defensively & give Rangers more of the ball, more opportunities would open up & they’d exploit it. It shouldn’t be that easy for hibs to (tactically) undo us. There’s games like Dundee away that I do think can be blamed on injuries, it wasn’t a good showing & our limitations were on show, but a side like ours have to be better at keeping the ball, when 2-0 up against the rest of the league. That is a basic requirement & there is clear tactical errors that result in us being unable to retain possession because this managers philosophy is about direct transitions. You say he’s tactically flexible & it seemed that way at 1st, with his early set-ups away from Europe showing that, but a tactically flexible manager would’ve seen at 2-0 that it’s a daft risk to go gung-ho for a 3rd when you’ve got a dire away record & a makeshift defence. If he dropped Bajrami or Hagi into the midfield, to make it a 433, we would’ve kept Hibs chasing shadows & been less at risk of conceding set pieces. We instead gifted them possession in key areas that exposed us. Too many managers have sussed him out & even if he gets his ideal squad, we would still see the same issues arise.

Celtic play inverted wingers - seems to work okay for them

Stuart Mowat

I agree that we have improvements to make in our shape and ability to manage games but this is a young team and to my point we need to learn and that does take time but whilst tactical hindsight is 20/20 - we scored 3 (good) goals v Hibs away from home and could (should) have scored a winner. Yes, Hibs changed their shape and it impacted how dominant we were (that's part of football, not the tactical naivety of Clement). Before Hibs 1st even Sutton was gushing about how good we were, 2-0 up and dominating - same as Celtic, you simply are not going to change shape at that point and personally, I don't think we were gung-ho. The 1st came almost out of nowhere from a high ball into the box, head tennis, Bajrami ball watches, loses his marker who finds space to score. That is where our confidence took a dent and Hibs, who are flying (top of the form league inc us and Celtic when we played them), got real encouragement. 2nd is never a pen, 3rd is a brilliant corner right on top of our 2nd string and weak defence. I respect the tactical shout and am not suggesting I have more knowledge but what I am seeing is 3 good goals, a need to defend better and, yes, improve game management. We have as many as 6 1st choice defenders out, a very young and exciting midfield and no depth throughout the team to freshen things. Those facts are the stark reality and changing the manager wont change that. Again, appreciate the exchange Ryan and obviously we are both after the same thing, here's hoping whatever happens we can get out of this hole and put us back where we belong...

Chris Graham 🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

They have the correct structure to allow it is the point mate We have round pegs , square holes and get you back to recruitment and what we actually tried to bring in to create and reflect the managers philosophy is miles off He has to adapt or change till he has the right players Finally brought Cortes on at the weekend and played him on the opposite side hes never played on It’s killing us We over think the Scottish game Get fucking after fullbacks and turn defenders they hate it

Jim Milne

Celtic also have players that when they lose the ball know they can hack down a player and it won't even be a foul let alone a booking. See wingback Alistair Johnson.

Graeme Homer

Good show guys, thanks not over highlighting the negativity around us and dragging it on. In Stewart’s comments on the manager it reminds me of Mr Holmes backing of Wallace and that even though he knew he was sacking him, he had to get everything behind the scenes right before getting a new manager in or they would be doomed to fail too. I’m not suggesting PS is anything like nor close to Mr Holmes but the circumstances are similar and hopefully history repeats itself as it normally does.
