With Adam still recovering from surgery, David and Martyn will put out a few specials over the next few weeks starting with a look at how the coverage of football has changed since the introduction of the Champions League in 1992. From a special event available only a few times a season to live matches being pub wallpaper, it has been a truly transformative three decades in how we consume our sport.

Great listen, at school mid 70s anyone who was interested in football had an English team , Saturday nights on BBC you had Match of the day maybe 1hr- 1hr 10 mins long with 3 games and a 5 minute clip of a Scottish game at the end , it then changed to BBC Scotland and STV/Grampian both having 30 minute shows and the alternated each season from Saturday night to Sunday each season ...... Get well soon Adam

Along the lines of the SFA and lack of tv coverage, can you remember the radio coverage for some reason you only got the last 5 minutes of the 1st half then the full 2nd half no idea why you never got the full game ? Great listen as always

Anyone who's bored of football now clearly isn't old enough to have sat through some of those 90s serie a games on channel 4. I remember a good few 0-0s with probably less than 5 shots on goal in the whole match. Great pod guys, thoroughly enjoyed it

Ross Monro

Really interesting pod lads. Enjoyed it

Depends on why you're bored of football though. I don't feel any connection to the Rangers team at present. Players are better athletes now and the rules are enforced in a way to protect attacking players more - well, maybe not in Scotland - so I can understand why some enjoy it more. Personally? Between teams entirely of foreigners and how oversaturated the European competitions and international calendar has become, I've never been less interested.

Astonishingly Brilliant players? *wibble*

This got me thinking about when watching football in the pub became a regular thing. I think for me it was around 1994, the EPL 94/95 season seems like the one where I would go to the pub to watch a game with friends. Prior to that the whole thing of matches being live was still a bit of a novelty and it was a case of going to people’s houses to watch together. I don’t remember the Champions League being such a thing in pubs during 92/93 or 93/94 - maybe an age thing though as I was 17/18 at the time and going to pubs with my mates was hit & miss. By 94/95, I was 19 and going to the pub was becoming more of a thing to do. By the late 90s it was standard stuff to go to the pub and watch Sunday or midweek games. The 1994 World Cup was the first one I remember people going to pubs to watch random matches - Nigeria, Sweden & Bulgaria catching the imagination certainly played a part. By 1996 and certainly the 1998 World Cup you saw folk just about camped out in the pubs to watch every match they could.

Great show, brought back a load of memories. Those midweek sports specials with a bit of football, then usually some boxing were always something to look forward to. The rarity of it definitely made European football in particular feel more special. There is such a lot of football now and I look at my kids who will pour over highlights videos or particular goals.. but will rarely sit down and watch an entire match outside of Rangers games (and lately even that’s been hit & miss!)

Interesting pod. Few points I would add. Itv coverage of Champions league stull wasn't great compares to Sky and BT sport when they started. Also you didn't mention how sky sports news was incredible for us fans as no longer did we have to wait for news to see Interviews and press conferences. I can now decide to watch Barry Ferguson presser yesterday in full for free on YouTube. This is great innovation. Also people forget how good gazette was on Saturday mornings. An hour of features and interviews of Italian footballers done in Interesting and sometimes funny way by the unique broadcaste James Richardson. Every fan watched this at the time. Great times. Unfortunately Football making a mess of using technology now as VAR ruining football games with excessive delays and overuse. Other sports use technology far better. This puzzles me. Good pod discussion though, well done. Hope you return to this topic soon.

Great show - btw, old Saint n Greavesy shows have been on ITV 4. As a 46 year old it’s pure nostalgia but it’s actually not as cartoonish as I thought it was 😋
