The sensational summer of 1989 was always going to ensure that 89/90 would be a significant one in the modernisation of Rangers, but there was another, less appreciated, story of change too. Martyn is joined by John and Andy to discuss MoJo, Souness's tactical experimentation and a dramatic start to the season.

I had lived in England for a few years by this stage so probably was further from the West of Scotland religion situation than previously so I laughed like a drain when MoJo signed . Great signing and it got it right up them, there was one guy who travelled up with us who was most upset wasn’t going back etc by December he was back. Saw his first goal against Aberdeen and his first against his previous club the man fitted in brilliantly to the way we played that season. Oh I wish I and Rangers were back to those times.☹️ As an aside I didn't hear anything from the Rangers end at Parkhead against MoJo.

I can remember when Johnston missed the 2 chances at Parkhead that on both occasions those around me were shouting "You meant to miss that ya wee bassa" ! Have to admit I shouted the same! 🙊

Another fantastic listen lads. Great memories again. Cheers

My bug bear with some of the new support as it were was that some of them up in my area were running around wearing Aberdeen or Dundee Utd scarves till souness arrived and slagging off bears like me who were going to see rangers home and away.lo and behold souness arrives and they are wearing rangers scarves and boring people oh how much of a bluenose they were now they had a season ticket for ibrox.

When Mo Johnston signed I think everyone remembers where they were , for my own sins on the Monday i was coming back from tenerife with my future wife so the Tuesday morning papers were full of it , so 1st train from Glasgow to the NE we duly boarded our carriage was filled with Rig workers on their north to Aberdeen , my wife asks a question from her magazine " is Marilyn Monroe still alive " .... Total silence and about 10 /12 guys just look our way, then heads back into their paper of choice... Great listen as always lads

For all the people saying they would not go back, I don't know anyone who actually did it and I worked with The Gub at the time so you can imagine that melt down

during his time with Celtic, Johnston was a wretched wee thug who combined some of the worst elements of Lennon and McGeady. Then he went to France and in his two years over there he seemed to mature as both a player and a person. Elements of the old Mojo were still lurking beneath the surface - as evidenced by his antics at first of all the World Cup and then (infamously) Il Ciocco the following summer - but by and large he was a successful signing. I'm not sure that we ever got the very best out of him, I would say that his first season was very good, the second season was quite good and then it tapered-off to him playing a bit-part role until we recouped our outlay on him. And it completely fried them.

I would have been 4 when Johnston signed for us, so I have no conscious memory of him doing so, but it's a transfer saga that still amazes me all these years later. The more I read into it or listen about it, the more I find out that just amazes me as well, like his autobiography comments while at Nantes. Obviously there was a mercenary aspect to Johnston signing for us, but it was an incredibly brave move to make as well. Undoubtedly the greatest signing we've made in our history (when you consider on and off field factors), but I still can't get my head around why he came to us.

John Johnston

After using our so called signing policy as a stick to beat us with nobody within Scotland actually said well done Rangers on moving on with signing Johnston. They feared this day would come and it meant we could now sign anyone regardless of colour, religion or creed.

Heart and Hand

Scotland said for years ‘Rangers must sign a Catholic’. Then when we did they said ‘not that one!’

I was one of two Rangers fans at my school in Ayr, the other being my step-brother! There were more Aberdeen and Dundee Utd fans across my year!!

A great analysis of the start to the season and to be fair I don’t think you could have merely touched on the most controversial signing in British football. In terms of seismic, this was off the Richter Scale; Kenny Miller in comparison a mere tremor. I was definitely in the “what a great signing” camp, also being a huge Scotland fan at the time & knowing how good a player he was. I went to the St Mirren game (blue nets) & was shocked we lost. It was a thing by the time Aberdeen came and I think John was right that it was just a huge relief when Mo scored and that was a great help towards the acceptance. I do also believe it was evident in his performances that he was giving it his all. Good discussion about the increase in attendance. A natural occurrence and according to my dad nothing new. He used to say Celtic fans were daft as they kept going when things weren’t great on the park, whereas Rangers fans insatiable demand for success was a good thing insofar as the attendances would drop and be a stark message to the board. Not the case these days I guess with regular sell outs. The first time my dad and I didn’t get into the ground was the opening of the Club Deck. Up until then you just gave the turnstile guy some cash and you could get in, but they installed those full height ones which meant no jumping over!

I specifically remember the T shirts doon the Barras with a penitent Mo Jo in a blue Gers top kneeling before the Pope with the caption :"Forgive me Father, for I have signed".😂

Johnston the player was a superb signing. The idea of him teaming up with McCoist at club and international level was an exciting one at the time. Agree with another poster that Johnston didn’t quite hit the heights and you only have to see how his Scotland and club career fizzled out by age 30/31 to understand he was on a gradual downward curve. Always thought if MJ had kept his levels up how useful (in top form) he would have been in season 1992-93 where we could have used the help with McCoist, Hateley, McSwegan. Everton, Hearts and Falkirk and a very brief Scotland return were to be his lot, though.

Was looking forward to this one. I had a look in the archive for the MoJo special but couldn’t see it. Anyone idea?

I remember Jeff Holmes telling a story on the network that Souness had said to him that he was going to buy a catholic and what he thought of it…Jeff said “Aye, as long as it’s not Peter Grant or Maurice Johnston”…😂😂

My memory as a 16 year old of Mo Jo.....May coming out of the subway singing we've got Ally "Fcuk" yer Mo! 10th July sitting on the couch eating a bowl of coco pops when Moira Stewart announces Glasgow Rangers have signed Maurice Johnson. Needless to say coco pops spat out and I did a wee jig. Great player and he gave is all for 18 months and it sickned them at the piggery.
