How do you follow near perfection? With great difficulty it turns out. John and Andy join Martyn to play counterfactual history with the signing of Duncan Ferguson, assess the injury nightmare that was well underway, the end of Richard Gough's international career and the slow start to the pursuit of number six.

I think it's so easy to write the signing of Duncan Ferguson off because of how it doesn't work. Because of the 3 foreigner rule, we needed a Scottish striker. I looked at the 1992 European Championship squad and the 2 young players that are part of that squad are Ferguson and McLaren. A season bedding in should have been perfect for Ferguson. The only thing I'd say is that I don't think the EPL has quite taken off where financially we couldn't have signed him in a year or 2 from the EPL if he'd moved south. It's not like where now where, to use an example from across the city, John McGinn became financially unrealistic for Celtic to ever sign as soon as he moves to Aston Villa.

Jim McLean played Murray like a fiddle,he knew Murray would pay over the odds to get Ferguson just to prove a point

I think issue with that summer is someone was signing Duncan . If it wasn’t us would be someone else Eg Leeds . My memory, which could be wrong, is by now the young United players were in revolt at their contracts. So I don’t think it was epl finances it was ultimately he wanted out with us being the preferred destination. Re McLaren I would be curious why we didn’t sign him in summer 1992 instead of McPherson. Given they ultimately swap in a year or two.

Martyn Ramsay

It would have been a perfect bedding in plan had it not been Ferguson, who wasn’t the type that thought he needed it. The move in 1993 was always destined for trouble because of the personalities involved.

Martyn Ramsay

Re McLaren, I think Smith felt that Pressley could be the future, he was under pressure from the wider media - and some fans - for not using youth enough and the pressure to spend again in the winter came from a pressing need for more goals so it was Durie rather than another defender.

Callum Dinnen

I can see why to be fair to Ferguson, it's not like he was signed for £1m or £1.5m which is chump change to us at the time, he's the most expensive signing ever in Britain at that point. I'd expect to be playing most weeks if I was him. I get what Martyn says in the pod about wrong man, wrong time, but the counterfactual reality where we don't sign him and he goes down to Leeds and does well maybe leads to interesting gripes in 1995. Although I've said we probably still have the financial muscle to bring him back up the road, thinking about it I'm not sure that's true. Sutton goes to Blackburn in 1994 for £5m, Cole to Man Utd in January 1995 for £7m and Collymore goes to Liverpool in summer 1995 for £8.5m. Transfer fees for strikers are creeping up and I don't think it's unreasonable to suspect that Leeds in 1995 might want double what they pay for him if he's done well and scored 15 goals a season. In that scenario, I think the cry becomes 'why the hell didn't we sign him in 1993?'

Steve Clark

signing of Duncan Ferguson had me questioning Murray for the first time, not the signing in itself but the fee we paid.i thought it was more about Murray proving a point than for the good of Rangers

Mark Boyd

Everyone was relaxed about ally Maxwell. I have deja vu

john cowden

I agree Callum and I would have signed him. Back then Ill be honest I’m not sure on managing him that season but he is the future. Probably kept both for a few months with a view to getting a decent amount for hateley . Let’s face it hateley has the season of his life but in the four subsequent seasons ferguson plays more games at a higher level with a better goal to game ratio despite being in jail for some weeks.

john cowden

Apologies Actually goal to game ratio similar just Ferguson in premiership and hateley not so much .

Andrew Mathieson

Great show as always lads. I think of this season as the bill for the season before. Squad played not only at peak ability, but peak capacity. There was always going to be a price to pay. On the Ferguson signing: The idea of selling Hateley when Ferguson arrives is pure FM stuff, we’ve got the wonderkid move the veteran on, works great on a laptop but no real life manager in their right mind would have risked it. Ultimately Ferguson was the right signing in the wrong moment.

john cowden

I’m not an FM guy, too old, while it’s a bold move and potentially risky. This is the time to do it because this is when he is available and the domestic landscape well there is no real competition. Would I sell hately immediately no but probably in the next twelve months I would. Like all of us I am shaped by my childhood memories. Bye bye Colin stein , a sensational player, hello Derek parlane, an untested youngster. Probably plays a big part in my view .

Andrew Mathieson

I’m sorry if that came across disrespectfully. It was in no way intended to be so. I’m not disagreeing with the idea. In fact with 20/20 hindsight it would have been absolutely the right move. But it would have required an incredibly bold manager to make the move. Walter’s mind has turned towards 9iar which makes him increasingly risk adverse

The thing that struck me that I never really registered before was Ferguson’s age. 21 years old . . That is a hell of a lot of pressure on a young guy to go & be our main striker for that fee at that age. I don’t think we bought a nailed on starting striker at that age again until maybe Alfie (& even then he was bought in at £1m and as backup to Herrera) I take it there was no chance of us saying to him “hold off at Utd for a couple of years big man & you’ll get Hateley’s #10?”

john cowden

Hi Andrew, it wasn’t taken that way. I was just trying to highlight my age and how it shaped my perspective. Plus I am more likely to go for it as a personality. Doesn’t mean I’m right and it can (has) blown up spectacularly. However I did see DJ and parlane come in and do the business when teenagers. So I would have went for it, same as I would give Lowrie a real go now. No one right no one wrong just a bit of theorising for fun. So no off nice taken and none intended from side. I think as we said on pod, the issue isn’t that we bought dunc but effectively that we only bought dunc . After a grueling season or two you need to freshen it up. Memories of summer 76&78 coke to mind when we didn’t

Callum Dinnen

Back on Dunc, I wonder how differently his Rangers career goes if he doesn't headbutt McStay? He starts off 94/95 quite well, there's the goal which kicks off the Laudrup legend against Motherwell and he gets a League Cup hat-trick.

Dougie

Good discussion on Dunc signing. I would argue the big signing we SHOULD have made that summer 1993-not McLaren or Durie-was a better replacement for the injured Goram than Ally Maxwell.

Gary Brown

Another great episode in this wonderful series Martyn, aided by John & Andy. Big Dunc! Certainly succession planning. But sometimes you don't get to pick the time to implement that. He fit the bill in every way. Murray couldn't not buy him! Daft laddie. As was proven. Can't underestimate the ego of joining the mighty all conquering Rangers, to 'improve' them, when they were 'cheated' (allegedly!) out of winning the European Cup and as the most expensive footballer in the UK. He's 21. Just need to look in the mirror, take a trip down memory lane and remind yourself what you were like when you were 21, without that level of success, fame & money. I still think if he had still been at DundeeU, he wouldn't have seen jailtime. I don't remember those Smith comments either but I'd guess, with hindsight & reading between the lines they were pre-emptive excuses for lackluster play covering all ground between 'no viable challenge' and 'can't really be arsed today, hungover' coming from his team. MxSwegan going always puzzled me, scored barraloads of goals in the reserves and since a youngster, natural successor / understudy to Ally and had the opportunity to develop with him out. But the Rangers hierarchy, management, players, support & the 'image' desired to be portrayed through the media etc couldn't, wouldn't accept the team taking that route at the time. After many long years of buying the best at their best it has become the norm and all mentioned are bloated on the success. The rarest & most expensive things were desired, expected, even taken for granted to be the only thing acceptable. Which is back to my point above, 'couldn't not buy' ! Enjoying this as ever. When's pre-order for the book Martyn?

Martyn Ramsay

This is why I made the point on the show. In the summer of 93 no-one was overly concerned about Maxwell. He was a backup and Goram would be back to normal in January. This is where hindsight falls down; it wasn’t a pressing issue for Smith to resolve at the time.

Martyn Ramsay

Will let the world know when I know! Safe to say that you’ll easily get one when you want one 😁

Gary Brown

Honoured you're putting me on the guest list 😊👍 I reckon it will be VERY popular.

So £500k was the “tartan tax”, the premium required to buy from another Scottish club. Dundee United’s posturing rankled, especially as they had been happy to buy Ian Ferguson and Ian Redford, who helped them reach the UEFA Cup final, from us and when Golac got the sack they turned to a Rangers youth coach, Billy Kirkwood, as a replacement. Happy to do business with “those nasty Huns” when it suits them. They did sell to us when the money was right. I would have more respect for a club if it refused to do deals with Rangers, period. Ideally Ferguson would have joined us a year later as the natural successor to Hateley, but the circumstances didn’t work out that way. To sell a player for a profit after such a brief and indistinguished time at a club was a success for Rangers.

Really enjoying the listen through these being quite younger during the era I’ve always remembered it as us steam rollering all challengers it’s odd hearing that wasn’t the case. Miss Celtic being that woeful mind you!

Andrew Mathieson

Agree wholeheartedly that we did and shouldn’t have put all our eggs in one basket. I’d also love to see Lowry given a run now. Wish I’d seen Parlane and DJ my old man swears that Ally only has the goal scoring record because DJ played half his career at CB and didn’t take pens
