Cool Title....

Rona Bluebell

Going to listen on my drive out, but standing ovation for that tag line 👏🏻

Simon

McLaughlin should never play for us again.

Simon

Some of the other goals he’s conceded this season are debatable whether others might have saved it. He will not win us points like every other league winning keeper.

Dougie

McLaughlin's performance was so bad he cannot play v Ajax. Karius for Liverpool in CL Final comes to mind. Didn't play again for Liverpool in a big match. Similar.

Iain MacDougall

You mentioned Gio and Advocaat and the similarities. To me it smacked of the Le Guen era, decent results in Europe and Le Guen did from what I remember. In the league though it's awful, do we tolerate it this time around because it's Gio and he is a favourite from the past???

Norm

We are supposed to have hired a couple of tactical

Martin Sutherland

McGregor back in this week, the. Ease McCrorie in after. For me, the minute I seen Kamara at 10 the game was over.

Iain Campbell

Spot on from Andy B. Kamara is the perfect example of going through the motions domestically

Norm

..tactical gurus? If we can see the issues domestically, what are they seeing and what are they telling GVB? Do they think the lack of intensity is fine or is he ignoring them?

Gregg

Horseshoe passing is a symptom of an alarming lack of movement ahead of the defence

Fraser Black

Cap doffed for that tremendous title 👏🏻👏🏻

Scott Watson

"Anyone wants to have a go, come and have a go" 😃 That's the spirit!

Alan Cowan

I know you're saying that Gio has credit in the bank and dismissal is not yet on the cards, but we have major form and performance issues away from Ibrox. I for one cannot see us winning a league with this guy in charge. His demeanor, attitude and all round body language is unemotional and his discription of events mirror his personality and that is boring, unemotional and for the insomniac. For me, after UCL, it's time to go

Alastair McGeoch

The sad truth is Gio isn’t capable of wining the league. We have no footballing identity and his away record is awful. If he was going to change it or was capable of changing it he would have done it by now. This is our O’Neil moment, to take them across the city on we need to look to play less football and less possession against them and be more direct from back to front and target what we suspect is a soft centre in their defence.

Greg Archibald

Andy makes a good point about McLaughlin. Up until the weekend he has been fine. He's the number 1 because he has been fine. But like David says goalkeepers need to be under the same scrutiny as outfield players. Glen Middleton and Stephen Kelly were fine but we all accept they aren't good enough for us, why has the club accepted a "fine" player to be a nailed on starter in such a crucial position?

PR__92

I've mentioned this before on the day the Relentless documentary came out I watched and I thought to myself FUCK we need to change this squad their 1 and only goal was to win that 55th league if it was up to me I would have only kept a handful of players from that squad and move the rest on to weed out that mentality. Also I wouldn't look much into Gerrards v Gios record in OF games the Celtic squad is night and day when Stevie was there

Martin Davies

McLaughlin wasn't deemed to be good enough to displace McGregor last season despite his poor form, and now, he is? Let's say it for what it is - McLaughlin is an average goalkeeper, maybe even a journeyman, who is decent as a no 2 but not just doesn't have the presence of a proper Rangers keeper. We downgraded and should really have invested in this position, especially given the current no 2 casts such a shadow but is quite clearly yesterday's man. I can't see how McLaughlin recovers from this.

Martin Davies

"Fine" doesn't cut it for a Rangers no 1. I expect my keeper to make saves that no-one else in the SPL does or can do. McLaughlin would be a solid keeper at a mid table SPL club where the odd mistake is tolerated and you're not expected to pull off top class saves every few weeks

Rona Bluebell

Thank you for the pod. Love hearing your take and insights, such good quality. I was at the gates of Dens Park singing ‘there’s only one Ian Andrews’ when we were playing Dundee Utd and Celtic reserves were playing Dundee at the same time. The irony. Honestly, poor McLaughlin was worse. Football is ruthless and interesting to see how Gio responds. I suspect he won’t change. Anyway, hope you’re all feeling better and settled in Amsterdam already. Take care.

David

Advocaat's Rangers played probably the best football I have ever seen a rangers team play. Gio's has played the worst I have ever seen. It's bordering on Murty.

Graham Jones

The problem wasn’t talent on , it was attitude. You could change the entire eleven but it depends if they turn up ready to win matches. It’s sad to say, but this wasn’t a huge surprise because we’ve been one paced since the first match. They have the ability but that goes nowhere if you don’t show up wanting it more than your opponent. It’s true that some players have been here too long. That performance on Saturday isn’t just players and management, because it goes back to a lack of investment over two years.

Calum Downham

Good pod lads, must be difficult to cover after those type of results. I rely on the heart and hand pod schedule to get me through tough days at work every week, just remember for every arsehole there’s hundreds more people who actually appreciate what you all do. As for Rangers and the board, I’m beginning to warm to the thought that although they have shown ability financially considering where we were as to where we are now, their ability to make decisions regarding the football team isn’t quite as good. It’s starting to dawn on me that 55 was the exception, not the rule. Hope I’m wrong.

Doug Young

Good chat. I don't think it needs to be as wholesale as going seasons without silverware. McCrorie, McCann, Lowry, King... even Lovelace.... that handful of players together with Tillman, Lawrence, Matondo.... Should be enough to inject some spirit. Should have been Davis or Arfield, not both.

Doug

I agree we need to stick with McLaughlin. I think his performance was more a symptom of the overall team malaise than indicative of what he's going to give us in the long term over the season. I don't think you can equate GKs quite the same way as an outfielder. It's much easier to swap outfield players in and out when their performance drops. GKs are a uniquely specialised position and continuity is important. There's the old adage that when a GK has a bad day it's magnified by ten because it usually results in losing goals. It's one he needs to just put behind him and focus on continuing the good performances he'd given up until now.

Doug

The dynamics aren't the same. Last season McGregor was the No 1. GKs are a uniquely specialised position that crave continuity. You don't change a GK without very good reason and McGregor was still performing just enough (particularly in Europe) for their not to be enough reason to take him out. The McLaughlin performance may well be that reason for him, however I think we have to consider the overall trajectory of the season and the style of play. As the guys said, McLaughlin suits the style of play better and is better suited to the tactics teams tend to play against us. If you drop him now, he's done and then we've only two GKs. One past it and one not ready. McLaughlin is in the middle. Unless he repeats this level of errors, we're best sticking with him until we can get in a quality replacement.

Lea Thomsen

It’s simple. It really is. It’s the tactics domestically. Don’t work. That’s it. Works in Europe not at home. That’s needs changing. It really is that simple

Gordon Millar

To have been such a distance behind the opposition in terms of preparation, thought, movement and creativity begs the question, is this squad capable of changing and playing at that pace and intensity consistently enough to win a league? Depressingly I think we know the answer. I also get the similarity with Advocaat and have questioned if it is the Dutch way, to retain possession and wait for a mistake....which works well if a team opens up and allows you space to operate in, doesn't happen in Scotland.

James

The other lot have a far more incisive attack, are well drilled, and play to patterns and game plans (just look at their “offside” trick). We apparently do none of these. For this reason we will not win the league under Gio. Nothing suggests that we are going to change. Additionally we all saw the goalkeeping problem, the RW issues and need for more signings yet the management either don’t or simply don’t think these are issues.

Douglas McIntyre

Gio’s lax and naive attitude regarding Scottish refs, squad strength, team urgency and the lack of motivation for an old firm match. It’s possible that Gio agreed to this level of funding that pissed off Gerrard.

Derek Williamson

Went to Napoli in the summer for a couple of nights stop over on our way back to UK from NZ. Depends where you go, can look a bit rough in certain areas, rubbish etc. The stadium isn't the best and where it's located is a bit rough. Around the port, the square and main shopping streets with pubs, eateries & cafes is fine. The pizza is a must, was the best ive had 👍 Granted most of the traveling support will be on the beers haha 😄

Andrew Whiteside

I have more questions than anything else. Are we practicing the formation for European games in the league match before the game? Are the players saving themselves for the euro games? Does the team only care about European games? Have we adapted to 5 subs where you can afford to play at higher intensity?

Gary Shaw

Got to disagree with Andy when he said that was Ian Andrews levels from McGlaughlin…the 5-1 game in August 88 goes down in Rangers folklore and rightly so but there’s this myth that Andrews had a shocker that day when in reality he should probably have did better with one of the goals (Ally’s back header),the rest he had no chance with but on Saturday, every goal they scored would have been saved with a good GK in

Guy Incognito

I get the arguement for chucking in the youngsters to freshen things up, but surely the problem is that they'll only get a game for gio if they subsume themselves to his style of play? I think part of the reason the likes of McCann and Lowry get less game time than we might like is partly because they are young, unpredictable and likely to do something out of the ordinary -exactly the sort of thing we are all coming to realise that gio doesn't value as much as discipline and tactical awareness

Jordan Neill

Surprised the board wasnt mentioned in discussion. Yes, definitely talk about Gio and tactics etc but i dont believe hes been backed in terms of money hes made the club to money hes been allowed to spend. Looks to me the reason he kept so many old faces is because he had to. This slow turgid and passive football is nothing new because thats the type of players we have, especially in midfield. The same players that far too many of our fans were all to happy to watch n get new deals. The reason Gio wont be able to change is because the likes of Davis, Jack, Kamara, Arfield etc can't play any quicker or technically get any better. Be a long season with same players who have repeatedly failed domestically

David Clapperton

Couldn’t agree more about the Van Gaal at Man Utd comment. I’ve been saying this to my dad for months n he strongly disagrees. Thank fuck someone else can see it. In my mind this is a season of missed opportunity already. The squad should’ve been cleared out wholesale and fresh young blood brought in. We’re old and stale…. But with the tactics the manager goes with domestically I’m not too sure it would’ve made any difference. Very good manager but not what we need I’m afraid.

Heart and Hand

We did 45 minutes on the board on H&H Extra on Friday so it would have been just repeating the same points. It’s there from 01/09/22 if you fancy a listen.

Jock Paterson

I think it’s unfair to pin a reversal of fortunes in the league on Lowry. Particularly under Gio, he’ll have the flair coached out of him in no time.

Laura McCrimmon

Very much agree with Andy B on the majority of the team from 55 season being below par at the moment and that was my frustrations with Saturday, so many just didn't look hungry enough and I don't know what a manager can do with players that have that ability to simply just switch off and not do the basics. Yes gio can be an over thinker and his tactics may not be suited to this league but I still have belief that if he was able to get more of his players into the team then we would see the benefits. And before anyone says it, I know he said he was relaxed with the team and players he had and we didn't buy anyone, I don't think he could have said anything else. I believe and maybe naively that he would have wanted more players but would have been at the mercy of the board and for some reason they didn't feel they could spend money. For me our domestic form is not a new thing and it was poor long before gio, 55 was a one off so I kind of don't like to even compare that season to any other so to me we will be stuck with this if these players cannot look in the mirror and give themselves a shake and admit they are underperforming.

Martin Davies

In a way I agree with what you say, had we taken McGregor out last season, he was finished, and the same probably applies to McLaughlin now. I think keepers need to lose their place if they turn in poor performances though. Its just at the age of both McGregor and McLaughlin, there's probably no way back. It certainly doesn't look great for young McCrorie that we have a 40yo playing in the cups. He's not a kid now and at his age he should be a trusted no2. I suspect Gio will stick with McLaughlin and it'll be interesting to see how he reacts to such fierce criticism of his performance. What is not in any doubt for me is that this is a position we should have looked at during the summer. We either had to recruit a new no1, or promote both McLaughlin to no1 and McCrorie to no2 with the intention of McCrorie being no1 next season. We did neither and now have 2 aging goalkeepers dropping clangers, whilst the younger guy's career stagnates.

I think Andy Barnett is absolutely spot on with his assessment about some of the players that they are turned off with the spfl, looking at modern day professional football the shelf life of players and managers seems to be 4 years then they need a fresh challenge it's just the way now .

mark wyper

Thank god I'm not the only one wishing I had never booked the trip too Naples 👀

Spoon

We have built some players up to be better than they consistently perform, until we can be honest about guys in the squad and their output this will continue. Form dips and sometimes it’s not your day but too many star men only do it half a dozen times a year and the rest are bang average. For at least three years we have had some supporters talking about when X player gets back fit or when X players form picks up we will be strong, the reality is many have been absolute passengers or not good enough we aren’t quick enough to get rid of people who aren’t consistently contributing at their wage levels. We have almost a whole 11 beyond their sell by date, Kent, Kamara, Alfie, Arfield, Davis, Borna, Roofe, Helander etc should all have been refreshed by now, certainly not all for the same reasons and some of those have done a turn but none should have been kept as long as they have and it’s biting us in the proverbial big time. We need to be much more ruthless in terms of getting the best from someone and moving them on before it gets stale or for money to reinvest. Even just to stagger the turnover and not have to rotate out 7 at a time it makes sense to keep things fresh and moving. The weird thing is this team could still go on a great euro / league run if they fancied it, the talent is there as we saw vs PSV it’s now clearly simply a mental block or laziness in how we approach things from the players. I don’t believe it’s GVB telling them to be slack, be slow or to overplay, he might well favour possession but all Dutch teams know how to attack when the time is right. The season isn’t over by a long shot but improvement must start now and be sustained.

Gary Brown

Thanks for the flagship show David, Andy B & Andy McG. Good work lads. Its difficult to discuss these all of the topics raised rationally & sensibly - they're very emotive when we're winning, nevermind on the wrong end of the worst skelp we've had in a long time.
