John Smith

A complete and utter disgrace what happened to Duncan

Callum Dinnen

On the seat debate, you still see this nonsense now. There wasn't a peep from the press prior to last weekend about the away allocation; I doubt it will be as quiet in the run up to New Year.

Callum Dinnen

Also, this would be a question for the end of the series, but has going through this series meant you've re-evaluated players in your memory? Gough making defensive errors seems to be a more frequent occurrence this season, for instance. edit: and just on Goram, in an alternate universe where a team down south comes in for him and we wash our hands, who would we have replaced him with given the likely need to stay Scottish? Jim Leighton seems like he'd be the only realistic alternative from a quality perspective...

Great point!…this is going to be controversial but I never rated Gough as highly as the majority of our support did….Time and nostalgia has been kind to him,…he was a great leader but he made loads of basic errors,I thought he was always out of position hence the reason he would always slide tackle, scored some ogs and gave away countless silly penalties and a few in OF games

Leighton was just about done then and not sure that Smith would have fancied him. Would have been interesting if he then used a foreign player in goals. We’ll touch on it next week but no club came in for Goram perhaps because of perceptions around his professionalism but also definitely because of his height. The EPL was starting to move for taller keepers. Just as well!

Martyn Ramsay

In terms of re-evaluating, I’ve long been of the opinion that Gough wasn’t the best technical defender but was an excellent skipper if that makes sense. I don’t think I’ve had any big changes of opinion tbh. Maybe a little kinder to Smith than I once was and more critical of Souness but not vastly.

Callum Dinnen

From memory 1994-96 becomes Leighton vs Goram when it comes to the national side...I've got fond memories of chanting Scotland's number 1 sarcastically at Leighton during a 7-0 doing we gave Hibs around Christmas 1995 (possibly the game Gascoigne was booked for booking the ref?) which culminates in the squad selection for Euro 96 where Leighton is given the number 1 jersey but it's Goram who actually plays. Going foreign would have been an option but I think in hindsight you'd want your creative talent where possible to be foreign, having a non Scottish goalkeeper would be a bit of a waste. I'm glad nobody came in for Goram, but in an alternate universe where he goes there aren't a lot of alternatives given the constraints!

It was a ‘contest’ that was created by Brown tbh. You’re correct that it would have given Smith a headache but that wouldn’t have worked. His hatred for Rangers being just one reason! I also think we saw the importance of a good keeper so I’m not sure smith would have had issues using that foreigner slot for the right guy

Not on this one but never rated Gough as skipper, too selfish. From dominant era, Butcher was a far better captain by quite a distance.

Lee Colvin

Gough had 2 average seasons for 6 and 7 in a row, but was in great form for the 8 season. His blocks at Parkhead when stopping certain goals can't be forgotten.

Alan Spiden

Loving the series but by god that was a poor season, rounded off by that cup final. Made worse for me by the fact that at that time I stayed next door to two brother who happened to be Dundee Utd fans.

Douglas Innes

No wins in 6 and only 3 out of last 12 , no way our current manager gets to that kinda figures .....

Gary Brown

Thanks again Martyn for this latest episode of your wonderful series and thanks to Alan & David for their reflections & opinions which make the show so good. Whilst the subjects / situations discussed in this episode weren't as enjoyable as the usual Dominant episodes it is vital they are given the same reflection, opinion and airtime. The thoroughness, and honesty (as Alan said "warts and all..") is one of the major reasons Dominant is such an utterly captivating series.
