Scottish football was a very introspective place in the mid 1990s. Brian Laudrup seemingly winning a title on his own up here and the drama and quality from down south and abroad being beamed into every home in the country only intensified those feelings of insecurity. Was Scottish football worth the hassle? Martyn, John and Andy wrestle with this as well as looking back at five games that won the title and a very odd feeling in February.

I can’t seem to download or play this, is anyone else finding that?

Simon

Yup, not working here or through rss link in Apple Podcasts

Alan Waddell

At least it’s not just me!

Martyn Ramsay

That should be it now guys, no idea what went wrong with the original upload!

Alan Spiden

Sorry Martyn, still not playing, for me anyway.

Callum Dinnen

On John's comment about how shite 94/95 was, surely it's better than 93/94 purely because of Laudrup?

Rob Shorthouse

That game at Tannadice - and that goal by Laudrup - was the day that my love for the great man was totally sealed. The 'we are not worthy' tribute that day was amazing too.

John Johnston

Well worth the wait another great episode guys.

Jay

Your poignant words at the end Martyn......thank you

Another great episode of my favourite show, thanks Martyn, ably assisted by John & Andy. It's got to be said, you're a bit downbeat this week lads. I guess it's a very true reflection of the fare on offer at the time. That its been re-examined & reviewed with more wizened eyes & minds really shows just how the dazzling, new, vibrant 'Revolution' had become the staid, authoritarian, oppressive ruling class. Dominant! Undoubtedly! But the extraordinary becomes ordinary when it is routine. Resignation from our opposition effectively before a ball is kicked. - and we add Godrup!! Talk about rubbing their noses in it!! Rangers were caught in a strange hinterland at this period, far too good for Scotland, not good enough for Europe. We had a jump on the rest with stadium redevelopment, we had our flirt with the big time as England was banned. But the ban lift, Premier League, trendiness of football, increased TV coverage simply made the 'product' south of the border intoxicating, no one had seen the likes before and they paid handsomely for the privilege - think Andy said MNF was 'an event' with pals. Super Sunday was a joyous afternoon in the pub, non football fans just taking part. At this point it was not saturation, like it would become, but titillation with the biggest and best games on offer. Scottish football was old, staid and uncompetitive with only one (very low) odds on winner expected. Said 1000s of times - a big fish in a wee pool and compared to Europe & Premier League a wee fish in a big pool. But imagine what it would have been like without 'The Joy of Football' ?? I do remember thinking the season review video 'Seventh Heaven' was a bit of a stretch by the marketing dept though 😀 Looking forward to the next episode. Any update on the book launch Martyn?

It’s a fair point Callum. I think we forget just how exciting he was at first. I hope I’ve captured that. But, we played well three times that season, AEK wasn’t a fluke defeat like Levski it was a disgrace and the cup defeat meant it was over in Feb. Weird feeling. They really had to get it right and they pretty much did.

Martyn Ramsay

It wasn’t intended to be downbeat per se but I think that definitely was the mood of the time. Even Rangers fans were bored. Hinterland is a good way of describing it. I’m losing hope of a Xmas release but I’ll be sure to be telling you all about it when it’s ready!

Cracking show as always. This was my first season getting properly into football as a 7 year old so my feelings towards this campaign are the polar opposite to pretty much everyone else’s cause I fucking loved it! I had always remembered Celtic finishing 4th but what an unbelievable stat that they were the lowest scorers out of all 10 clubs. I do think we missed a trick not getting Van Hooijdonk ourselves at the time as we would have been a much more attractive option for the player and in the 18 months after we would end up paying decent fees/wages for the likes of Salenko and Van Vossen neither of whom threatened to be success.

Gary Brown

Thanks Martyn. Wasn't meant as a pop, I fully appreciate the period (Godrup aside) was a bit stale and club, players & fans had got a bit complacent. I just think its SO telling that the retrospective view has been endorsed by you guys while researching & reviewing it again for the series and arriving at the same opinion. 🤞crossed for you and a pre-xmas release for Vol 1.

Stevie Batchelor

7mil for Cole. Was that not plus Keith Gillespie going the other way too?

That day at Kilmarnock was the wettest I've ever been at a game but laudrup showed he was on a different planet to the rest.

It's a shame the Gold Cup footage is filmed on a Nokia3210. Laudrup is destroying Argentina in that game. Andy made a great point about doing it at that level mitigating how "easy" he was taking it in Scotland. Andy's point that he'd been such a star in the Bundesliga was well noted also. After a year with Uerdigan, Bayern were desperate to get him. He "failed" so much with Fiorentina, that the greatest club side of the modern era wanted to sign him in the summer of 1993. Bayern and Milan signing you in the 90s is a fair sign of your talent. There was very much a case that because he was playing for Rangers the achievements were done down. "He's not even the best player in his family" being another corker which was regularly heard. On the Kilmarnock game... was it a joke in the FF fanzine or did it actually happen when Burns said, after Celtic drew there in similar weather conditions, that "not even Jesus could have walked on that pitch" and the answer to that was "Aye, but God could..." ?

I think one of the biggest misfortunes is the number of games that Ally played with Laudrup. This was the first time I’d ever seen us on a Friday & I’m sure it was a really great atmosphere and iIRC Laudrup crossed for Ally to finish. Off the top of my head I can’t remember them being on the same pitch too many times let alone combine to score other than this? You’re all right about the end to the season after the cup exit. Everything felt tired and grey bar the odd good performance here and there. Re the EPL and televised matches, yes this was when it felt like it was gaining traction up in Scotland. Pubs seemed packed out on Sundays as you’d have the STV live game (fun the perfect descriptor for that Tannadice match btw) followed by games like Blackburn v Man Utd. Another year before the Monday matches took on mythical status with the LFC 4-3 NUFC match I think, but it was coming. I must admit that even through all Celtic’s recovery it didn’t occur to me that they’d mount a serious challenge the following season; they literally drew so many games I couldn’t take them seriously. And in actual fact we still kept them at arm’s length for a few years (sorry for the spoiler!) Looking forward to next week’s wrap up albeit, as you’ve alluded to, the tragic events in late March.
