Martyn asked you for your questions and you did not disappoint! In order to get through them all and do them all justice there will be two parts to enjoy over the next couple of weeks. David is here this week to help Martyn select a best Souness XI, discuss the importance of sliding doors, analyse their guilt about complaining at the time, the impact of the drinking culture and much more.

Funny listening to David expressing surprise over McCoist winning the poll over Greig - to me it's not a question, McCoist is the greatest.

Gary Shaw

I think the fact that Greig was the captain and figurehead during the darkest day in our history then 18 months later went on to be the first and only captain to lift a European trophy for us wins him the accolade and rightly so…That being said, for me and my generation it quite simply has to be Super Ally

Callum Dinnen

Same Souness XI as me as well; while it does pick itself, particularly the back 4 and goalkeeper, I was curious to see if anyone, particularly Cooper but also maybe Roberts given how much he was initially loved, might have gotten a look in. The Smith XI question when you do a follow up Q&A might be a bit more interesting!

Davie: I love the 92/93 kit Also Davie: I don't like red in a Rangers kit Make up your mind!

Martin Boyd

Your favourite kit was the last one I owned , oh dear! Really feeling old now☹️

The "sliding doors" question had an obvious answer for me. Just after Souness took over, we drew at East Fife in the League Cup and it went to penalties. A guy called Hugh Hill had his saved by Chris Woods and we won the shootout 5-4. Winning that first trophy against Celtic I thought laid the foundation for that initial Souness team to win the title first time, and gave belief we were winners again with a team still 75% from the previous years of failure. If that penalty shootout had gone the other way and Souness was dumped out his first trophy by a lower league team, who knows how his time as manager would then have gone.

David Herd

Not so sure I agree about the reasons for not having Ian Ferguson but including Trevor Steven. Fergie played far more games under Souness than Trevor did, and I thought in 1988/89 his goals from midfield were absolutely crucial before he was changed into a more defensive midfielder. I'd personally have had Ferguson, Durrant and Wilkins in midfield with Cooper and Walters either side of McCoist up front. Not 4-4-2 right enough!

Martyn Ramsay

It had to be 442 really so that gave us the limitations. There was no greater right sided midfielder between 86-91 than Trevor Steven. It’s not even close. Fergie’s best years came later imo and Durrant and Wilkins is a comfortable choice over the piece.

David Herd

All about opinion, but I still think Ferguson in 1988/89 was more influential in a Souness title win than Steven in any season he played for us. Trevor only really played one full season under Souness in 1898/90, he was injured a lot in his second season which was Graeme's last one. Rangers in 1988/89 were much better to watch and won more games and scored more goals than 1989/90. If it has to be 4-4-2 then he gets in probably by default more than actually having a greater contribution under Souness. It would be boring if we agreed on everything!

Callum Dinnen

I have to say, I was surprised at how easily both Martyn and David answered the question. I suppose it speaks volumes as to how well Souness recruited over his time at Rangers that the question of who the best XI of the era is is so easily answered. The equivalent 91-98 XI is proving a bit more troublesome, but that's for another Q&A.

Leslie Hibbert

Totally agree on the '98 Scottish Cup. From the romantic view if nothing else; played in the final of the first one, could we have made the final of the last one?? Definitely

Callum Dinnen

The Petric comparison is really apt when you're answering the question about Scottish players. Go back 10 years and the outstanding defensive talent at Dundee Utd is Richard Gough. 10 years later it's a non-Scot. It's interesting looking at the 1990 and 1992 Scotland squads; all the talented young players in 1990 (young being players 25/26 and under you can sign and build the next 5 years around) are either ex-Rangers (Fleck, McPherson), at Rangers (Mo Johnston), or would sign for Rangers in the future (McCall, Goram, Durie). Collins is the only exception. Likewise, the Euro92 squad has 2 outstanding talents under the age of 23: Alan McLaren and Duncan Ferguson, both of whom eventually sign for us. John Collins is really the big miss when it comes to Scottish players we could have signed in the 1990s.

Alan Bradley

Coisty 100% correct - big Greig the greatest. Super Ally was magnificent striker for us, but John Greig everytime for me.

Gary Brown

Really enjoyed that, thanks David & Martyn. Great questions by the patrons and excellently pondered, discussed, theorised or answered by your good selves. Superb work lads, the love just shines through it 😊

David and Martyn, well done on a very interesting pod. I listened the day after the demolition by Liverpool when the atmosphere surrounding the club is as low as one could imagine. Everyone is feeling the heat - Gio, Ross Wilson, Stewart Robertson, the board. Yet look back to the 1990s and see what a binfire the club was - training on a cricket pitch, players’ diet, training and drinking a disgrace, a perpetually long injury list, outdated training and tactics - I shudder to think had Twitter existed back then! For all the criticisms we have of the club we love Rangers have made major progress over the last quarter of a century, especially bearing in mind the blip we took 10 years ago.

A bit late to the party but red shoukd never feature on a Rangers home shirt otherwise its just a Carlise United top and this seasons home top is one of these irks
