Martyn returns with the first episode of a season that could warrant an entire podcast in its own right. David and Alan join him to talk all things Gazza, celebrity, flutes, tactical balance, bad strips, Champions League qualification and a wonderful Old Firm double header.

Warning: contains strong language from the outset...

Wow. Took me back to the Gazza dreamland we were all in at that time. Brilliant show lads. 👏🏻

Ah summer 95 roasting hot weather,Britpop and bleached blond barnets galore, what a time to be alive!

Thanks again Martyn for this latest episode of your wonderful series, with the regular superlative input from Alan & David. A year of the finest vintage from the Dominant period, arguably the best in terms of maturity - of the football, not team behaviour. Earlier seasons provided more exciting 86/7, 92/3 or dramatic 90/1 times but I reckon this was the Zenith of the period, it had a bit of both with absolute assurance the quality could and would prevail. It all got a bit 'creaky' after this! One thing mentioned is a lesson from history not learned, especially by the fans - that the CL standard had increased in our relatively short time away from it! The similarities to now are as stark as the differences. Always thoroughly enjoy Dominant Martyn and this week in particular it is a welcome respite to reflect on a much happier time.

I picture Martyn suiting up for these intros after a weeks worth of the mirror and car steering wheel rehearsal! Enjoyed that again, well done lads!

What a time to be a Rangers fan. Up until Advocaat I think this was my favourite Rangers side to watch, going to the games this season was definitely more enjoyable than the previous 2 seasons!

It's funny as well, having listened through the whole series, how much of a throwback to a previous era the signing of Gascoigne feels even in 1995. We've had 6 years of decline in terms of wider influence in the UK game (with all due respect to Hateley, Trevor Steven is really the last top class English player we sign in hindsight) and this signing just seems to be a last hurrah during a decade where we decline in relevance.

Callum Dinnen

I think the first half of 96/97 is every bit as good as 95/96, Gascoigne and Laudrup were both superb. Then Gascoigne's Rangers career effectively ends in Amsterdam at that daft 6 a side tournament we played, and the team basically falls over the line in a heap. When people talk about 97/98 being a season too far for a lot of the team I think the end of 96/97 gets overlooked as part of that discussion - without looking it up do we not lose something like 5 of the last 8 games that season?

Simply brilliant lads. My favourite time in life and football and when I got to see my club sign one of my true footballing hero’s. Hearing the commentary clips has me shuffling off to dig out my Cannon Williams video collection :) if only I still had a VHS player :) I have the Gazza documentary somewhere on tape as well, was it cutting edge? I remember Gazza doing the door step challenge “Do you do Daz” walking through the streets of a tiny West coast village, full training gear still on, camera crew in tow and Jimmy 5 Bellies pissing himself laughing . I can vividly remember the old firm double header at the piggery as well. I had tickets for both games through our RSC, now that was a statement to make. One day football and following Rangers will feel like that again, I hope!

Does anyone remember Gazza phoning up the Scotty McLue show on Scot FM? Hilarious.......

Great show. My favourite on the pod. I was at the reserve game at ibrox with my brother and some mates at same time of 2-0 parkhead game. Garry bollan and John brown the scorers irc. Govan stand went berserk at Gazzas goal 👍

The red and white away kit is one of our best ever away tops!

I was there on the 10th of July! ☀️ I remember seeing something in The Sun saying that he had signed up for a column with them and thinking that The Daily Record was going to be gunning for him from day one. And they did. I used to write letters to Gerry McNee every other week slating him for his regular attacks on Gascoigne… while ignoring comparable behavior from others in the league. He never replied to one of them.

Summary of the start of the Sectarianism Industry is spot on - things utterly ramped up at this point… and the indignant reaction to the Rangers support daring to have an opinion or a voice on the subject was staggering.

Having been too young at this time to appreciate anything, I have always wondered if there was any trepidation amongst the fans about Gazzas signing? When you look at his injury record & limited number of appearances in Italy, was there any thinking that we had bought a busted flush? The comparisons to the Aaron Ramsey signing in January always fascinated me. Thanks again lads, what a series & can’t wait to hear the discussions about this season as this is my first “recollection” season as I began to follow the Teds. Can’t wait!

Martyn Ramsay

Some concern about injury but few about ability. Interesting there are some dismissive remarks in the FF at the end of 94/95 - “this won’t work” kind of thing - but by the time he signed, it was all in on that train! As we’ll see next week, the autumn generated the most concern that this was a bad idea.

Alastair Stocks

My old man has that picture of Ally celebrating the goal in the cup game framed and up in his study. Always stuck in the memory, even though I was too young to remember the game!

Love this series but have been waiting for this season. My family are all Rangers fans but when I was younger I didn’t have much interest in football until Gazza arrived. It felt like a seismic event I don’t think scottish football has seen since and I thought “I’d better see what all the fuss is about” from that point on I was hooked. A lot of my favourite memories with my dad and uncles are around watching Rangers over the past 27 years since Gazza! It’s interesting the media approach to him, I wonder if it came out of “can’t do anything to stop them on the pitch let’s attack them off it” as it is definitely when the Rangers = bad, Celtic = Saints/whitewash narrative that continues now started. Can’t wait for the rest of these episodes, I was close to finishing school, britpop was in full flow and uni was on the horizon. I can still remember various games from this time within the context of stupid things I was doing at the same time!

Late on catching this episode. Yes, what a signing! Great debate about the manufactured grievance; it’s pretty telling that when Gascoigne told his story of being stopped in the city afterwards and threatened he would be stabbed if he tried that again it was reported as though it was he that was in the wrong. No condemnation, no let’s take a step back lads what have we done here, just further negative press lumped on this reprehensible character coming to our game and single-handedly ruining it. Well, news flash, he reignited it for tens of thousands of us every other Saturday!! And like you say it carries on today with demonisation of certain players who are doing the same things on the pitch as some of their Scottish rivals. Oh for a day when the reporting is about insight, match breakdown, individual moments of brilliance etc. but clearly that won’t ever happen; notwithstanding the demise of the paper editions, I’d be shocked if we ever see another Scottish journalist get to write the back page column in the sunday broadsheets.
