On the topic of a new manager, how would anyone feel about Jesse Marsch ? Going off what he done at Salzburg, if he does leave Leeds I’d be very excited to get him here.

CRAIG CASSELLS

Our record European defeat was only two weeks ago and could be in danger. With the way this Rangers side capitulates when faced with adversity in big games the loss of an early goal tomorrow could see a hiding on the cards. Fingers crossed I'm worrying unnecessarily and we finally turn up for this seasons CL adventure and put on as performance we can all be proud of - I won't hold my breath.

Gazza_Hendo

Cowardly but the way I am feeling right now I doubt I will even watch this game 🫣

Steven Harrigan

Personally, no. All very much a product of a bigger system. We don't have that security in place.

James Stirling

Alex, have to disagree on Ross Wilson. As Director of Football Operations, he should not have let us get to the point where we don’t have a single sellable asset. Kent and Morelos will be signing pre-contracts elsewhere in January. There is then only King and Lowry who could go on and earn us a fee. Every other position on the pitch is filled with someone on the wrong side of their prime, or someone who isn’t good enough to be playing for us at the level we want to operate at. We should have been investing in the first XI, buying guys at £3/4m who we could then improve and sell onto a top 5 league for min. £10/15m, whilst getting the best from them to drive us forward. Instead, we re-signed Davis, Arfield and McGregor and hoped to get by. We should have also been working to get rid of guys like Helander, Roofe and Jack who cannot be relied upon and no doubt eat significantly into our wage structure. The manager should go, purely because he clearly cannot inspire the extra 10% that is required when playing for a club like ours, and he either can’t see that his tactics are working, or the players have given up listening and have reverted to their own habits of getting it wide and slinging it in. Either way, he’s a lame duck and needs to be put out of his misery.

If we think Liverpool gave us a scudding, and they did, gird yer loins bears for what just might be the embarrassment of all embarrassments on Wednesday.

Couldn't agree more with Alex about Dyche or Alardyce. I'll be joining you on the gear if that's where we go next. Almost spat porridge over my phone at Kev's comments about player trading: this model isn't a choice but a financial necessity based on where we play and what we need to do to survive. It's not a case of either adopting this model OR winning - we can and we will aspire to do both. We just need to look across the city to see that it is perfectly achievable to sell our best assets for profit and replace them for less whilst maintaining competitiveness. It won't always work but what's the realistic alternative given the financial reality? Great pod as always chaps. 👏

Martyn Dick

Agree with Steven that only those who know Ross Wilson’s dedicated responsibilities are can effectively judge him. If he’s being told to operate within extremely tight parameters, then the job will be a struggle. Find it strange the twitter outrage at him and not the board. Also, seen stats on twitter recently about our current points tally being higher than 55 season. We have been brought up as rangers fans that the only thing that matters are results….at what point does that not become enough? Is it because the opposition are now setting a higher bar? I’d change Gio now, but just found it an interesting point…

Kev Armstrong

Oh I didn’t mean it on player trading as a rule. Just the Ajax model of bringing through youngsters to sell for profit while winning 1 league in 4.

High work rate = number of crosses? Jumping the shark Alex mate haha. Sorry but every terrible performance or result seems to have to be viewed "in isolation" for Alex. This week it is because Livi are really good and organised. Last week we heard there was no use going on about poor performance after poor performance as it didnt mean we would drop points. Well it obviously did and we have. Poor analysis full of excuses again. Stephen, I feel your disappointment and upset, as do almost every other fan. Beyond terrible again. Dreading Naples. Appreciate the pod lads. Tough times. And Kev is spot on about the roulette for right wing.

Regardless of his exact remit we all agree Wilson’s responsible in the broadest sense for all football operations regardless of the budget stuff? Why is he getting off when to many fans basically every element of the first team is dire and regressing ? He can be hampered by late changes to budget but unless someone knows otherwise that isn’t the case. If he was told to sell before buying due to the squad size, why did he retain guys he could have cut ? Davis, McGregor, Arfield etc could all have gone, we could have got something for Kamara and I suspect for Kent (from Leeds) if we pitched them at a realistic level. He could have freed up loads of slots, through terminating contracts of those who are Injured and don’t contribute like Helander and Roofe who you assume we have insured and you could release or even buy out a few more. In addition there is a lot of talk about style, surely that comes from the director of football operations? Doesn’t he set the style ? Doesn’t he control the ethos and the guy he appoints is meant to work to it ? We seem to have the only of director of football who doesn’t do this currently, or he certainly isn’t being held to account for it. Wouldn’t touch Allardyce with a barge pole - circus we don’t need, he also like Kevin Thomson had no record of managing in the league and surely if it applies to one it applies to all? Rather have guys like him or McCann who at least know the league and could do a job to the end of the season to allow some proper planning. Never even heard of the other guy but why is it assumed he fits the league and Scottish football ? Flawed logic here for me. Can already see a caretaker scenario happening which is the equivalent of writing off the season to me. I love how there is an argument we aren’t responsible for hiring guys or picking managers but we are absolutely entitled to get them sacked, make the bullets but ask someone else to carry the can for firing them? If you want change you surely want to change up and should have an idea how to do that and some insight into what the realistic options are in terms of profile, wages, budgets and squad overhaul, if you don’t we can throw any name in. If there’s no budget snd no player turnover planned it will leave us looking at a very narrow pool of candidates. Alex makes excellent points around our current management team and their previous successes. Perhaps you need a group of men layers who want to learn and grow, far too many in my mind aren’t of that mindset. You could argue the one guy who fits the Dutch mentality of always wanting to improve was Bassey and he was developed and unsurprisingly now plays for a team who have exactly that ethos. Perhaps it’s not them who are the biggest issue. Steven keeps going back to effort and application of players I can’t believe they are getting away with this, it’s disgusting. They can like or lump the manager and his team but he is the manager and if they aren’t playing for him then they are to my mind also sticking two fingers up at the support. Choosing when to try or give your all isn’t on, if the manager gets himself binned from bad selections or mad tactics fine mental to let a player or players dictate when we pick up points. Rant over for this one, guys all kidding aside you entertain me and frustrate me in equal measure but this is always essential listening! Great work as usual.

John Davidson

Fair enough. Although Ajax have won 3 of the last 4 Dutch titles while making record sales.

James Muir

WHY NO CROPOD IN THE LAST 2 WEEKS ?

Doug Young

Genuinely got goosebumps when Big Sam was mentioned. Not even I went that dark when I was mulling over options. Terrific chat though, lads- cheers.

Jamie Gourlay

Alex would give Comical Ali a run for his money. Everything is not ok 😬

andrew mitchell

Still in all 3 domestic competitions, …Sam allardyce 🤔😂😂…. Careful what you wish for ….

CJT

Wow. Cup winners and European finalists to KT or Sam Allardyce in 20 odd games. Nothing else seems to matter for some. No thought of what happens next just get him out. Even getting some content to get a real thumbing tonight to bring it to a head. Just can't comprehend that way of thinking. It all appears inevitable now but the dye is cast with this group of players. A new man might get a 6 game bounce but they'll be in the same place shortly. In my view that means even if you're done with Gio a well run board let's him take the flack while they get a proper plan, proper recruitment and setup the investment required to do the required job. This season then becomes prep for next. 2 x transfer windows to gut that dressing room. Can't, just can't be big Sam or KT (yet) and names like Martindale give me the fear. A lot easier to park the bus than pick a path through it.

John Palmer

European Football this Season has been disastorous. We were lucky v St Gilloise, done well v PSV in both legs to qualify for ths CL but have been nothing short of embarrassing in all 4 games so far. My opinion at the half way point was F Europe off and concentrate on the Domestic game as we are in danger of letting them across the City hit form again and steam ahead at an uncatchable rate with us being left to do nothing but watch them hold aloft another League title and possibly the Treble this Season 🤢🤮.

Stephen Fraser

Thanks as always for the pod, gents. It's 4.45pm just now and this game has just spoiled ma dinner! Totally dreading it, but I'll be watching it anyway. The only debate is whether to have a few beers with it. Might get some crisps as well, just so I've got something to barf up if it's 4-0 on 30 mins.

The whole point of having a director of football or sporting director is to establish a footballing philosophy within a club and then working to ensure that every department is working towards fulfilling it. That is how you achieve success and stability long term as a football club. Ajax is the gold standard, but there are plenty of other clubs like Porto who also pull it off well. It takes time and patience, especially when you are starting from scratch as we effectively have been since King and the Three Bears took control. We have been through a number of cycles, each with its own difficulties, but each also taking us eventually on to another level. We are currently in a difficult moment due the the point of the cycle that we are at and a couple of unfortunate injury breaks, but the idea of a radical change of direction at this point is simply absurd. To listen to a lot of the talk around the club at the moment is also to realise that most fans have learned nothing from the misery of the decade that we went through before 55. We have to trade players, there is no choice. There will be inevitable dips when great players are sold (and we've sold three very good ones in the last year), we need to learn to live with that, because the only alternative is a return to the boom and bust short termism that led us into the financial gutter. My biggest concern with Van Bronkhorst is that in recent weeks the growing (and premature) hysteria seems to have started affecting his judgement, it increasingly looks as if that might do for him. It would be a massive shame. There's scarcely six months since the guy gave us some of the best nights we've known in our lifetimes as supporters, Talk about premature.

James Stirling

Hagi and Lawrence are unlikely to be seen until the New Year and I would expect they’ll not be contributing much to next season. They’ll then need to have a bumper season to be considered sellable assets for me. Yilmaz I agree, but where is the player so in form/well regarded that we’re expecting bids in January? Tells you a lot when not one player is being talked about for a move away.
