Martyn, Adam and Ally are back with a slight tweak based on recent events. We continue our journey through each of the positions in the team. Next up are centre-backs:

  • What type of playing style do they suit?
  • What are the player's strengths & weaknesses?
  • How do they fit into the tactical style?
  • How important/underrated is centre-back chemistry?

Great insight on here as always. Top podding 👏🏻 Goldson n Davies are the pairing we hope clicks. King will get plenty game time. What you do with big Fil is an interesting one given the need for surgery elsewhere. Good points raised Sands I agree, will leave. That kinda money just can’t be justified. Souttar is one we could maybe get million for 😇 and reinvest in that area in the summer.

John Smith

How would you feel about signing Harry Souttar ?

Darren Stewart

Adam's book is a BealeBall blueprint. Fantastic stocking filler for SPL managers, but I'm blaming him if it all goes tits up 😛

Ryan Stewart

Good pod as always lads. Announced last night that Porteous won’t be signing a new deal at Hibs. Playing a bit of devils Dick Advocaat here but Speaking strictly as a footballer, how would yous feel about signing him as a Helander replacement next season? Davies and Souttar very questionable injury history’s. 4 CBs of Goldson Davies/Souttar King Porteous

Gregg

Absolutely not for me - partly as he is an arsehole and I don’t think he’s good enough. One good game for Scotland seems to have fanny dazzled folk - he’s a poor defender and whilst young for Scotland is 24 I think.

Ryan Stewart

Yeah I’m not saying I think we should sign him, just thought it was worth a mention as it was fresh in my mind when I listened to this. When Adam said about the attributes he’d be looking for in a CB I think he has some of them and is also young enough to improve and he will find more consistency as he gets older/more experience at a higher level. He’s a hard one to judge for me. I think the fact he is an arsehole can blind people to what ability he does have. I also think there is a massive snobbery from our fans about players who play for other SPL teams. I’ve seen him have very good games and I’ve seen games where he makes a lot of mistakes, particularly with his positioning.

Gregg

Agree that we have a tendency to dismiss Scottish players. He’s decent on the ball and has a bit of pace and power - he is incredibly rash (would get tonnes of reds for us and his positioning is not great. Seems to lose his man a lot. If he was 19 might be worth a punt - he’s not a young player anymore.

Ryan Stewart

Fair enough. Personally think 23/24 is still young enough for a CB. Still plenty time to improve, particularly under better coaching and training with better players. Whether even that would take him to the required level is still up for debate though 👍

Gregg

It’s a fair point mate but think if we’d have been wanting that we’d have been as well keeping Katic - which I wouldn’t have been for either

Mark Boyd

The issue for me among the centre backs without helander, souttar and obviously allowing katic and balogun to leave is our lack of aggression in both boxes particularly in Scotland. It’s still a big part of the game. The emphasis solely on use of ball in back line as an ideology does worry me sometimes when we are buying at the price point we are. Hope Adam is excited it’s only 5 more sleeps till his tav pod 😂

Spoon

Excellent pod gents and loved the discussion. Not sure I share the love in around Goldson mostly as I just get triggered as the kids say with his haste to blame others when he makes one of his mistakes (which I genuinely think happen more than people acknowledge) however he has shown the ability. I think the panel highlighting the lack of real aggression to win the ball as something missing from his game might also stop me short from totally buying into him but I am more than happy to agree the boys a player. Where I cant agree at all is with the praise of Helander who even when fit never looked anything but a cart horse and was routinely making terrifying tackles from the wrong side. Then add in the value we have had for a guy who basically is the Swedish Souttar and I genuinely boggle at why we would consider him anything bar a total flop and some of the worst value for money we ever had. If you look at his cost per minutes it must be horrendous and if he was Scottish he would have been rightly slated. Chuckle at the identification of what we need in a centre back that we dont have, not because it was wrong it was bang on but with the right type of coaching and investment of time and games wasn't that what we had in Katie ? Raw of course, perhaps shy of the passing but the guy who wins the ball (perhaps too keenly) had the stature, was a threat in the box, athletic, aggressive etc ? Sounds like Katie who in his early 20's was a bizarre guy to release especially given he had shown he COULD come back from injury. Dont mean to sound critical as I agreed with a huge amount of what you did say, personally from what I have seen Davies will be the man moving forward and will eclipse Goldson so for me whoever we go for will be to pair with him. Looking forward to next week.

In terms of Souttar, bearing in mind we started last season with Jack Simpson as 4th choice, sure Souttar as a signing on a free is basically an upgrade to your 4th choice, with the bonus that he's nation trained so we can actually register him for Europe? As a free transfer he was an absolute no brainer IMO.

Martin Davies

Great listen guys. I can't agree with Adam on Helander and a new contract. There is absolutely no point in keeping a player, any player, in the squad when they are fit <50% of the time. He simply can't be relied on. Would you ever put him in our European squad for example knowing he takes up a valuable space and the chances are he won't be available for selection? We can't afford to carry an injury ravaged player, especially when you have another player like that in Soutter also in the squad. Soutter meets the home grown criteria and on a free, was worth a punt. But I would not be even considering Helander. I agree with the thoughts on Sands. He's not a centre half and I'm not sure he's the standard required to play midfield. At £2m+ I think we can do better than a utility player.
