Best outcome, 3 points. Next best, let them know the season won’t be an utter canter.

Mark Craig

I don’t know what it is with the team recently , they all seem to love these powder puff passes. The minimal amount of effort to make a pass rather than firmly passing to a teammate. It causes us so many problems week in and out.

Callum Dinnen

The equaliser is Fashion Sakala at his simple but effective best. Get ball Run at opponent Cause problems Make things happen He wouldn't be out my team while fit, it baffles me how many of our fans just don't rate him.

William Francis

Probably his lack of output the vast majority of the time. Mostly there's no thought to what to do with the ball. On the rare occasions when he thinks about it, you get a great goal or assist.

Callum Dinnen

Sakala is probably our most effective player in terms of goal involvements per 90. When you're as direct as Sakala is, you don't actually need to be very successful to be effective. But for some reason our fans are more keen to remember the times it doesn't come off for him rather than the times it does.

Richard Stewart

Good discussion on the Flagship. Would have liked to hear more discussion on the rules of the game. I lost count of the number of foul throw-ins by Celtic players, especially by their new signing. It also happened in the World Cup. Have FIFA changed the rules to state the ball has to be thrown with two hands from behind the head, or is it just referees that don’t know the rules?

William Francis

TBF Sakala was great yesterday, especially in the second half. Would love for him to kick on from this and produce more great displays over the rest of the season

DAVID PARK

is that still a thing. genuinely assumed it had been scrapped, it is never enforced. Throw ins have been getting worse in recent years.

Richard Stewart

I’m sure the rule would be applied if our players took throw-ins like the opposition throw-ins.

Gregg

My issue with him is he does run at opponents a lot - often straight at them losing the ball. And he loses the ball a lot. And lacks composure. He can be effective though as we saw yesterday. I’d hate to play fives with him

Derek Johnstone Logan

The ‘other lot’ surely not the ‘other half’. I dont think any of us want to be related to that rancid organisation anymore than we need to be.

James McConnachie

Tav - I keep hearing this risk reward argument with Tav. His is continually targeted down the opposition left and is destroyed in Europe regularly unless covered by the midfield. We sold the wrong right back last year. There’s an issue around winning as well. I’m prepared to take the ‘at me’ on this but I’ve never had a winning vibe from Tav. Can’t argue the numbers but he’s not there in the big moments in the biggest games. Right, pile on now.

Spoon

Martyn’s opening comments were 100% on the money and hit the nail on the head. Couldn’t agree with him more but the question is where is the realism and patience these days? Excellent discussion gents, nail hit on head.

Spoon

Not a pile on mate but I’m interested in the way you phrased your critique of Tav who for me is the polar opposite of Kent. Tav consistently puts up the numbers and performances but to many the eye tells them he isn’t good enough. Kent’s numbers never tip the balance of being good enough for a Rangers yet lots give him a pass and he seems to be the gaffers boy. Like you with Tav I keep hearing about his intangibles but he’s just another forward we have who is goal shy and doesn’t post the numbers needed. Interesting how two big players in the team are viewed. Tav according the record does more right than wrong while Kent doesn’t make the impact you would expect from a £7m star man yet for many it doesn’t matter. For the record I like Kent but don’t believe he is value or clinical enough. Tav is a traditional RFC whipping boy, he can do well for 80 minutes but proper remember ten minutes or ten pieces of play he isn’t 100% on it.

Russ

Not sure what it is with Tav being over casual in games. I know he under hit the pass but he's been too soft with his contact for months now, he was too lax in the europa league final as well from what I remember. Bizarre really, fairly recent phenomenon with him.

Doug Young

I have paid for maybe....three apps in my life. If anyone makes an app that automatically mutes Andy Walker's voice every time he speaks, take my money.

Scott

Where did the surgeon up the arsehole analogy come from haha!!

Alastair McGeoch

I think it’s lack of fitness. It’s clear under GVB the fitness of the whole squad was allowed to drop way below the levels he inherited. I think we can see that in some of the incidents where we have lost goals this season. If fully fit and in the zone knowing you will cover the ground to make the tackle/affect the game means you probably have a second or two more to make a decision whereas I think this season we have been labouring to get across the pitch at times and when we get there they are knackered.

Alastair McGeoch

Also, we used to tactically setup to cover Tav when he went forward which again I think stopped under GVB

Alastair McGeoch

Having had time to calm down after the game. Disappointed to not get the win but pleased we were able to raise our levels and belief when taking Celtic on and ultimately make them look ordinary for large parts of the game. I think we are still feeling the effects of GVBs tenure in relation to the fitness of the squad and as that returns and we get our injured players back I think we’ll see the confidence and styles of play come back as well. Disappointed not to win but positive signs are there albeit it doesn’t change the fact the squad needs an overhaul and as the pod said, we don’t need any more project players

James McConnachie

I’m 100% with you on Kent. For me the numbers don’t add up. All that pish about him drawing players out of position etc etc. Compare him to Neil McCann. Goals win competitions. Silverware is the only stat that matters. Sakala doesn’t have a 25% of the skill but has a bit of the devil in him. As for Tav, it’s really not about being a whipping boy. I’m into the character of teams. There’s a weakness, a soft centre, in this Rangers team. The stats have shown that. Tav is an exploitable weakness on the right and make’s individual mistake after individual mistake. In Europe it’s hide behind the couch stuff. As a captain and leader he doesn’t pull this team where it needs to go. I suppose it’s having watched many Rangers teams, you can smell it. Barry F - winner. Gough, Amo, Butcher etc. They all had that intangible quality. Character. The ability to win. I’m turning into Jock Wallace.

Craig

One of my favourite things to watch in the successful spells under Gerrard and Beale was the way the players would just fizz passes at each other, safe in the knowledge that the recipient would control and keep possession. Hoping the sort of tentative short passing we saw at times on Monday will soon be coached out of them.

Douglas Wright

You can't coach concentration but most often a lack of concentration on a regular basis all comes from Fitness. Fit players generally keep their concentration without issues

Doug

"As a captain and leader he doesn’t pull this team where it needs to go." I mean none of Ferguson, Gough, Amoruso or Butcher ever pulled their teams to an invincible league season (including our highest points tally ever) and major European Final back-to-back. Tavernier has also captained the club to and through one of our most sustained holistically successful periods of European football ever, culminating in said final. It's also important to put the timing of his captaincy into context. No one in the modern era has captained Rangers following a level of trauma as Tavernier has. From there he's taken us back to being League Champions, stopping the ten. Taken us back to Europe, achieving things we could have only dreamed of even at our best and he's lead us back to the Champions League. he has lead this club to everywhere it has needed and wanted to go. Now yes, the very final piece of that puzzle is consistency, but the whole team including the board need to contribute to that for it to be a success. No one man makes a team. "Destroyed in Europe regularly unless covered by the midfield." - Tav is an exploitable weakness on the right" This is a partially unfair criticism of a player, for something that is primarily a tactical issue. It's fair to say we can be gotten at on the right, because we play with our FB both high, and with an eye to be ready to counter, to benefit from his attacking attributes. The team is drilled on how to deal with this and it's a team issue if it fails unless a direct Tavernier mistake costs a goal. This season that has only happened once (confirmed via SofaScore). You even note it yourself, "unless covered by midfield", yes, exactly, that's part of their job yet they seem escape blame free. If our midfield and wide attacking players could regularly contribute higher levels of goals & assists then perhaps we wouldn't need to rely on Tav as much. But they don't, and so we do. The evidence shows s well, that it works, significantly when everyone is on song. In our road the the final, Tavernier scored the most goals ever scored by a Rangers players across a single campaign in a major European competition. There's not much more he could have done to lead the way. "He’s not there in the big moments in the biggest games." I see this cited frequently, seldom with any examples (though I'm sure there will be some). I too though can think of countless big games Tav has been there for. Our first home OF under Gerrard, Rangers 1 - 0 Celtic (Ibrox 29/12/2018) or the multiple crucial goals and pressure penalties taken throughout the European run (Dortmund home and away, Braga, Leipzig). He was in places the best rated player of that final too. Doing what all the best captains do in taking our first spot kick as well. I don't expect to change your mind, and that's ok, we can ultimately agree to disagree. But I will always be passionate in my defence of a player who has been one of our most consistent high level performers, who never shies away, is always available for the team no matter what, scoring goals, making goals and ultimately has lead us to some of the most amazing nights in my living memory.

Doug

Thing is, it's actually not as rare as we tend to think (including myself). He ended last season with 12 Goals & 7 Assists across all competitions. Making him our 4th best goal scorer and 5th best in assists. As things stand this season, he's 7th & 5th respectively. His dip in the goal scoring is less a reflection of him I think and more that we've had more midfielders chipping in this year so far.

Doug

"Have FIFA changed the rules to state the ball has to be thrown with two hands from behind the head" I don't know if I'm missing something here, but yes, that's almost word for word what the rules say... From IFAB: At the moment of delivering the ball, the thrower must: - stand facing the field of play - have part of each foot on the touchline or on the ground outside the touchline - throw the ball with both hands from behind and over the head from the point where it left the field of play. [End Quote] There's a reasonable amount of scope for variation within that to be fair.

Gregg

My hope for Sakala was he’d be a novo type - still time for him but unbelievably wee nacho had far better technical ability and decision making 😂

Gary Shaw

Tav has always had a tendency to under hit passes..he always seems to dink and clip the simplest of passes which I find strange…even as far back as Gerrards first season when they beat us at Parkhead,he gave the ball away with a lousy clip pass to Goldson from which Forrest scored from….And I think if I see Morelos attempt one more of these cross field passes when he isn’t even looking,I will throw myself off the Copeland Rear 🤬

James McConnachie

We won nothing in Europe and the goal that equalised came off his side. Great memories but ultimately that’s all they are. He’s won two pieces of silverware as captain - the league title has been shown to be an outlier season where there wasn’t fan pressure and the Mhanks were on the slide. He’s not dragged Rangers into games or through games. We could overlook the bad defending when the assists etc were there but they’re not now and the eye doesn’t lie. He’s lost pace. If the player trading model was being applied, we’d have sold him and kept Patterson - who could defend. One on one Tav isn’t a good defender. That’s a fact. If he was, there wouldn’t be this discussion. Unfortunately, when the team isn’t banging in goals aplenty his dozen or so big errors are causing us problems. No-one doesn’t like the guy or doubts his professional credentials. He cares for the club and is an example to younger players. All true. But the only stat that matters is silverware and character is the biggest part of that. Ultimately, it’s all about opinions. It’s just that mine happen to be correct. 😝

Rhys bradford

Can’t get behind the idea that Tav’s days as a marauding full back are behind him. If we win the Europa league final Tav wins player of the tournament. He’s suffered from spells of poor form but he’ll be back to his best soon enough

AGS

Agree. However I’m of the opinion that you should be allowed to kick from touch as well these days; make the game more exciting I think

AGS

Hopefully Sands never plays again
