"whats needed?" Money and new players. Done. Throw in some fan anger first because this board ain't caring or capable enough.

Dingus

Think we’re all miles off the mark if we stop and think about what the majority have been saying since the final whistle - that playing a 20 year old Raskin from the start would’ve solved the issues we have all through this team. Even if they get close enough, Alfie apart, that starting line-up don’t know how to win 50-50’s. We stand off and HOPE we’ll get the ball back. That’s why a significant change in personnel with a competitive mentality is needed pronto.

Greg

The one some people don't want to get rid of in the summer was anonymous yesterday and gets away with it, avoiding the criticism dished out to Tav, Morelos and sakala.

Callum Dinnen

The most baffling thing for me about the Morelos sub is that he's a totally different player when he scores goals. Having scored, subbing him was baffling.

Callum Dinnen

I don't know how much of this is down to being angry from yesterday but I wouldn't keep any of the out of contract mob. Kent was a disgrace yesterday.

drgriffen

With the trophy tallies approaching equality there is a tangible marker for a lot of fans to concentrate on. The Board have to be aware of how ugly this could get if they continue to allow things to drift.

Billy McCormack

Two words to explain yesterday "Shat It!"

Spoon

The time for excuses for this core group has long since passed. This team at its heart have a group of guys who seem incapable of doing the basics a professional footballer, particularly a modern one, is supposed to be able to do i.e., follow a gameplan and absorb manager instructions. Since the end of the SG reign, we have had a team who are trained at a state of the art facility, given player packs on the gameplan / their direct opponent, nutrition and sports science out their ears but can't go out and execute it. As you guys say we kept hearing about the need for a reset at half time around that period, why? we played pretty much the same way each week and used the same players? what was different really week in week out? It's an excuse that we have heard routinely since then, why can't this group take on and hold basic information around marking, pressing and building play? Worryingly anyone coming into this group seems to become infected within a few months with the same malaise, instead of people setting expectations to the keen young players and driving them on we seem adept at dragging them down into the doldrums and training them how to go back instead of forward, sideways when that fails and give them an aversion to shooting. The core ‘senior players group’ need dismantled and reminded they actually haven’t achieved as much as they think, yes 55 was great but the rot we saw from the aftermath still seems to be hanging around. Far too many in this group have been elevated beyond their actual merit. Maybe we needed to believe we had a proper team, or we were shopping in the big markets or that we had identified real gems, but the reality is we have given certain guys double if not triple the number of years in the team we should have. Some have never had it; some had it and just can't recapture the early form but regardless of the individual issues far too many of that team are in a rut and either too comfortable or past their best. Yet Beale defends them, wants them to stick around longer and seems blind to their considerable downsides. The guys I am talking about include the perma-injured but are Kamara, Kent, Lundstrum, Goldson, Tav, Jack, Arfield, Roofe, Sakala, Morelos…a long list but it actually illustrates the issue the core has gone to seed. There is no doubt we need a rebuild, not a top up, not a refresh a rebuild and ideally into a style that suits the brighter sparks we have in Raskin, Tillman and Cantwell, maybe even change our style to focus on a style of play that suits Colak who despite being pigeonholed by many early is a natural goal scorer given service. The bigger worry for me is Beale. It's no secret I believed that changing GVB wasn’t addressing the issue and I don’t subscribe to a lot of the talk around ‘X wouldn’t have happened under Gio…’ as for me the blame has always sat with this squad. I think they let Gio down, I think they continue to let Beale down. The worry is Beale seems to want to preserve with failing talent and defends them beyond the usual manager speak taking flak off a struggling team. If he genuinely doesn’t think this squad is as broken as folk think he’s not the man people claim, he is. I also think like Sakala he needs to stop babbling in the press, others seem to like his chat but to me it's all nonsense that rarely translates to the field. Injury updates, signings, tactics, selections he has loads to say on all these things but rarely the same thing twice or something that comes to pass. He needs to keep his own counsel as at best he is just generating friction around us and at worst he’s starting to look a bit daft. I haven’t been as convinced as others that the mild upturn in results has been as dramatic as significant as they portray. Yes, we have won some games but that happened when GVB came in until this shower decided they didn’t like how he wanted to change things and they started phoning it in. Can anyone say with confidence that as soon as this group come under some flak, they won’t throw Beale under the bus too? This game might well be the turning point, will his vision be the latest one they don’t want to buy into? I think it's time the support come to terms with the fact that nobody is coming for our players with anywhere near the value we think they are worth because they simply aren’t worth it. They just aren’t that good, and we need to face facts. Kent, Morelos, Kamara, Sakala etc aren’t seen as being top players, look at their stats (which now seems to be something folk don’t like) they don’t produce. People can point to intangibles, chaos, taking opponent focus etc but none of these win your games, goals win you games and stopping goals stops you losing them, we are garbage at both. Standards, we have let them drop. We have pampered and overpaid a group who are mentally weak and full of excuses. It's a long way back and if Beale is going to stick with his ‘boys’ I think they will get him the sack. I am not saying he’s rubbish; I’m not saying he can't turn it round, but he needs to break this cycle and some hard truths need told to our ‘star’ players. David is right it's all far too nice, time to roll the sleeves up, those who aren’t up for it, time to go.

Dougie Jones

Absolutely agree with all the downbeat commentary on yesterday and it is worrying. I just think it needs to be said that how exceptionally well Postecoglou and his signings have worked out for them (domestically) was very far from a given. We would certainly have scoffed at the idea of him as our manager. Just shows that managerial appointments are down to luck, right place right time etc. But I agree that our current malaise is bigger than any manager

Mark Sheen

Surely the five year plan began when we brought in a Dof model, we had mark Allan & now Ross Wilson. Allan was brought in in 2017 so we have had this “model” for all those years yet here we are in this current situation. As you said there seems to be no accountability or responsibility. Too many players have been here for far too long, starts from the captain down. We need a fresh start & a cull. Some of these players are on their 5th & 6th manager if you include murty. We need a fresh start

Ewan Christie

Genuine question, if there are no quick fixes then how did they go from an utter embarrassment in the season we won the league to being completely dominant again in such a short space of time?

Gregg

They’ve spent £50m in 3 transfer windows - it certainly helps albeit you need to get the right players

Martyn Ramsay

Simple. They had a long standing culture of winning and an infrastructure capable of absorbing a terrible season, righting wrongs and moving on. That’s what I meant: we are absolutely capable of the odd trophy as things stand. Not sure there’s evidence for anything more consistent quickly.

James McConnachie

A team of losers. That’s a fact. Since they were largely put together in 2018/2019 (ignoring that we returned in 2016) they have lost 11 trophies and won 2 - and I’m not counting the Europa League final or the League they are about to lose. For those saying Tillman is only 20 - correct, but Ian Durrant was 20 when he scored the winner in the final. Goals win games. That hasn’t changed in football. There’s not much goal threat in Rangers. Put it this way, do you think they were worrying about Morelos in the same way we were about Kyogo? How many games in the last 5 years have we said, “We could have played all day and not scored”. It’s now a theme. So, you have team that struggles with the low block but also with any decent team that moves the ball about quickly. Weak defending off the flanks and can be cut open through the middle. Ponderous in midfield (okay we signed two players but elected not to play them until the game was two-thirds lost). There’s very little numbers coming off the wings and none of our strikers are likely to get well into the teens (sounds bad but you know what I mean). And the goalies are shaky at best. There have question marks over team character over that 5 years. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you a shite team. Stats-wise early 80s shite. Folk go on about “we have these players because if they were the finished article we couldn’t afford them”. Point is they don’t come good. The trophy counts doesn’t lie. Anything that’s looked good ala Bassey and Patterson we’ve flogged almost instantly. Wilson et al have built a team of nothing that does nothing really well except lose. We are getting for mugs. The Great Man built a team in the noughties on a small budget. Wall to wall winners. It can be done. We just seem to have forgotten who Rangers are.

Callum Dinnen

In terms of long term, sustained success - we need a miracle like Walter's 2nd spell for that. Celtic are too well run off the field (and sadly have us to look at in terms of a lesson in how not to run a club) for any sort of sustained success. Malmö was the time where that might have changed.

Ewan Christie

Aye agreed that money certainly helps, my worry is that we don’t currently have the cash assets in the squad to raise the funds that we need for the revamp (doesn’t help that 2 of them are out of contract come the summer). I have no trust in this squad whatsoever, every single time bar a couple of exceptions they let us down. It’s high time the majority were shipped out!

Paul

Can we please stop referring to Todd Cantwell as a young player. He tuned 25 today!

Stewart Thomson

I agree on Roofe btw. It stinks. No chance a player is that unlucky with injuries.

Alastair McGeoch

When we won the league I thought that would be the breakthrough for this team to kick on and multiple trophies but it looks like it might be a Leicester-esque league win unless we have a complete overhaul of the squad. My concern is I can’t see anyone associated with the club capable of identifying what is needed. The board on the whole have made a succession of poor managerial appointments, Wilson has not improved the playing squad in his time evidenced by our team on Sunday essentially being the same as the one in the 2019 league cup final, the captain has been learning what is needed for about 4 years now and Beale - was part of the back room staff when the slide started after the league win and in the first acid test has indicated he still doesn’t know what’s needed. We need a catalyst for transformation and can’t see where it could come from

Billy McCormack

They might've spent 30 million this season but we know they shouldn't be functioning as a club because they're Pedo Bastards, and they're getting protected by the Scottish Government, SFA and Media.

Gregg

We should have a fair amount of cash - before player sales - this year.

Ron Jeremy

We could all do with a bit of cheering up,when’s the next episode of the ally addendum out?

Alan Cowan

Yesterday's shitshow wasn't just a midfield disaster but defending on both flanks is a disgrace and has been for some considerable time, years if truth be told. Persistent back passing drawing the air out of any forward possession or quick counter attack. Both shit it to make a forward pass that ends up at the opposition, so just pass it back and pass the responsibility to another, usually Goldson or Davies. We have a team of perpetual losers, losing doesn't hurt them as they've all been through it before and are very comfortable with losing. No surprise at all with our lack of fitness, tactics or in play ideas.

Martin Davies

I've been very critical of the likes of Kamara, Barisic, McGregor, Morelos. But I also think guys like Tavernier, Goldson, Kent and Jack need to have their positions questioned. They've been constants throughout these lean years, and need to carry their fair share of the blame. I finally lost patience with Morelos earlier this season and I'm starting to lose patience with the 4 mentioned above. No time for sentiment. We need winners.

David A

Rangers will be in a much better position next season for sustained success with our present back 4 and Hagi,Raskin,Cantwell,Lawrence,Lowry and hopefully Kent,Morelos and Tillman as these 3 players will be very difficult to replace. There needs to be changes to the squad but we have to be very careful in the manner we do that

Martin Davies

We all know this squad thought it was mission accomplished when they won 55. Alarm bells should have been ringing when they went on a bender instead of preparing for the European tie.

Luke

Nothing says new era Rangers, quite like playing a 2019 Rangers team. I get why people would want to start with experience in an old firm final, but we have became all too familiar with that performance yesterday and every Rangers fan has seen that type of game from that particular group of players in the past. Board have their work cut out. Major investment needed.

Alan Cowan

Listening to tonight's show you mentioned Matondo. Completely forgot about him. Did he get shipped out in January?

David Campbell

When is the tipping point for the fans with regards to this board. We are constantly asked to buy this that and the next thing. Been charged OTT prices for European football. For what in return? We are constantly being failed by those in power. Massive summer ahead for our club. Yet another rebuild required scunnered

Spoon

Roofers career is one season of genius then issues, it’s why we have him and nobody wants him from us

Spoon

Totally agree, there are sacred cows in that team that seem untouchable while producing very little

Gregg

Is there a better financially viable alternative to the current board? Yet to hear it - careful what you wish for pal

Spoon

He gets a pass every game, never sure why. Gives up the ball far too often, runs across pitch as often as forward and his finishing is a disgrace. Top players actually worth £7m practice every day to get better in their weak areas, clearly he either isn’t coachable or doesn’t put the time in. The numbers don’t lie nor do the lack of bids, someone down south would take a punt on him if released but nobody is paying a fee for him as they can see what so many in our support don’t as far as I’m concerned. He’s just not as good as folk make out. More importantly while he is our play through guy he doesn’t score or set up enough and teams have worked him out. He is stale like the rest who joined back in the day.

Graeme Brown

The point about mentality - or a lack thereof - is key. I’m paraphrasing slightly but I remember when we signed Amoruso, Walter said something like “Whenever I’m looking at bringing in a player I ask myself; - Are they good enough to play for Rangers, and - Are they a winner?” I’ve looked at every new signing since through that same lens. Ironically I think you can be a winner without having won anything yet. Raskin strikes me as being hungry for medals and desperate to prove himself. I’m not too sure I’d put too many others in the same bracket.

David Campbell

Absolutely and am greatful however we as supporters are asked to fork out for 3 4 kits a season, edminston house packages £150 for champions league. Yet the product on the park is stagnant. Where as a club do we want to go. The odd league title and cup win in 3 or 4 years or constantly winning titles and cups. We are at a stage again of needing a rebuild. Something that when the DOF comes in was supposed to avoid.

Gregg

We are operating in a completely different market now - Amo was fiorentina captain ffs.

John Jamieson

Lundstrum since he has been with us has had only 3 months where he performed to the level required. Kamara hasn’t kicked a ball since 55. They both started the hammering at park head how the manager could look at those two together and think that they will do a job is a sign of the same issue we have been dealing with since we won 55. Keeping players that are past their sell by date and still continuing to trust those same players. The squad absolutely needs gutted and to be honest our medical team needs looked at too. Lawrence yilmaz Matondo helander soutter roofe all our long term how is this not been addressed at this point it’s a joke

Gregg

So that’s a no then. I get we are asked for a lot - a lot is optional outside a season ticket. It doesn’t give us a divine right to win no matter how much upset we all are.

Colin McL.

Of course. But we do have a right to question the footballing operation. We spent a significant amount of a limited budget on Matondo, Yilmaz & Davies with two of those on big salaries. The Board (and manager) are confirmed they are very happy with Wilson. Decisions such as these appear to be hindering our progress.

Spoon

Your spot on, far too many in squad have had their egos puffed beyond their achievements and it seems it was enough for a few to rest on their laurels. Week on week excuses are made for many who continuously under perform. The idea we should just accept it is half the problem.

Rona Bluebell

I’m an eternal optimist and believe it will all come good 😊

Adam

I don't even think a new shiny rich owner stops the short term pain. Might have some influence on the long term right enough. We are beholden to FFP, we cant spend more than we make and due to a multitude of sins in the court room over the years, playing in a pish league with shite prize money. We need to spend within our means otherwise we risk being fined or suspended from UEFA run competitions. That's the reality, no sugar daddy is gonna save us. I think our biggest issue isn't actually money. It's getting value for money out of the squad we have. We simply don't. It's our biggest issue. This summer is a real chance to get rid of quite a few guys who no longer deliver the goods on a consistent enough basis. Some cracking players in amongst that, but I think we're at a stage in which we need to try a different approach. We sing a song for Kent to the tune of 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' and the opening lyrics are a fairly apt description on where I am with a number of players within the squad at the moment. "When routine bites hard and ambitions are low And resentment rides high but emotions won't grow And we're changing our ways, taking different roads Then love, love will tear us apart again Love, love will tear us apart again" There's a sad irony to that. We are at stage now, where just trying your best isn't going to cut it anymore. The fans have moved on from 55, we want a team that can stand up and be counted upon. Too many in the current squad are quite happy to just turn it on in Europe on a Thursday night, bungle our way through a league campaign and cross our fingers in the cups. It's time for new blood. It might fail or be similar but at least the overriding feeling won't be resentment and apathy.

Graeme Brown

You’re absolutely right, but the point about mentality remains. You’re not telling me it’s impossible for our recruitment department to find someone with the right type of mindset to play for Rangers? The point I’m making is that what we’re watching is proof that the mindset of our signings is every bit as important as their mentality. Matondo’s got ability. Do you ever see him taking a game by the scruff of the neck simply because he will not accept being beaten?

maccalsa

Celtic decide whether we win or lose these games. If Celtic are of it we have a chance. If they are not we have no chance. Waste of time blaming owners, managers, players.. etc. We are just not up to it. The narrative of "I think we have a better team than them" is fanciful and just not true. We will win the odd league when celtic have a wobble, and we luck out appointing a great GM who can find us talent, but given time they will take our title of the most successful club

Jock Paterson

Are Wilson and the board pushing Kamara forward to try and increase his value for a summer sale?

Michael

Well that's left me even more depressed. So how about a debate!? How do we sort out the chicken and egg situation of Managers need time but we the supporters don't give the managers time. Frustrated Michael from Tiruvannamalai True Blues. See you on the 26th 😁

Doug Young

At least Alfie gives you bite and goals. I'll keep saying it but Kent is the epitome of the team to me. A player who thinks (and many seem to agree) he is some kind of superstar and that we "cannot lose" in the summer. He's a nonsense of a player and needs punted, soon as we can. Offers little, loses the ball constantly and can't shoot for toffee. This team, at its core, is comfortable sitting on its laurels, patting itself on the back and saying "we need to do better". Stop saying it and fucking do it.

Graeme Brown

For example; I thought Walter was signing a washed up old has been when he brought Davie Weir in for very little money, but HE knew that he had the right mentality despite winning very little in his career. Weir left Ibrox with the medals that proved Walter right; I’m every sense.

Moon Man

David, Ross, Martyn - just say it - “Tav needs replaced as captain”. If you’re talking cultural change then it has to happen with the senior leadership group. Too many loses in finals and the mentality comes from that. He’s been a great player for us, and still has lots to offer, BUT time for a change.

ivor swan

I don't want to be a Tav basher because he is one of out most important players. However he must be the biggest looser on that hall of fame wall. When the say show me your medals he has more silver than gold

Martin Boyd

I’m sick of Sakala wish we had got the boy Whittaker in January but by the managers own words he would probably have been on the bench anyway. If Beale is not careful these players will get him sacked the way they did with the previous one.

Graham Roy

Still pissed off about Sunday! But simply we don’t score enough goals that has to be fixed in the summer!

Doug

From your list I'd be keeping Tav and Goldson. They by and large have maintained their standards year-to-year. Even in years when people suggest they are performing far under par (such as Tav this year) when you look deeper into it, he's still actually putting up top numbers. It's just over the past two years he was so effective it makes this year look worse by comparison. As for Goldson, we've seen how fragile the defence becomes without him, so until we've stronger options in that area he is also a must keep. As for the rest: Kamara, Kent, Lundstrum, Jack, Arfield and Morelos have all been good servants to the club, great in some cases, but who's race has been run. Roofe had one amazing year that contributed to 55 and still have importance goals in him but his body is clearly not capable. Sakala, as much as we love him, and as effective as he can be against the smaller teams, isn't good enough at the crunch at the levels we need. I'd have time for him as a squad player/impact sub, but we can't be replying on him to make the difference in the big games. Our biggest issue remains an ineffective mid-attack area. We don't create enough against low blocks and we don't score enough goals with regularity across the team. We need these players to be matching and beating Tavernier's input consistently.

Doug

It's wasn't really a small budget, Smith spend just shy of £16m in one transfer window to pull that team up, and they were a team that still have a number of proven winners in it. They'd been horrendously mismanaged prior so the challenge wasn't quite the same. The last window we've had I would say is comparable to Smith's first in terms of level of spend across a couple of key players. Over time I think we'll see that value from the likes of Yilmaz, Davies, Raskin & Cantwell. We've already seen some value from Colak and should be purchase Tillman I'm sure the same will go for him. The time we are in right now, is only the first months of Beale's career, and only a single January window in. Plenty of time for us to hopefully be looking back on this period as the rocky start to a winning tenure. As for that Tillman vs Durrant comparison, Tillman scored the goal that put us through after trailing Union SG then set up the winner against PSG to get us into the UCL. So if you're looking for defining moments, he's had some too.

Doug

"At least Alfie gives you bite and goals" - that's part of the problem, he doesn't and hasn't in a long time now. All I have seen this season is a player who gets mopy and/or angry constantly when things don't go his way. That's why I think he had to go off on Sunday, he was become ever more petulant and I think Beale was worried about what I was worried about. He's one blow up from a red card. I think my patience is beginning to wear thin with Kent as well. He does create things for others but I'm not sure it's enough on it's own to ignore his paltry goals and dwindling assist numbers. Tav & Goldson retain my support however as by and large their individual contributions to the whole have been consistently good. Frankly we can't afford to lose what Tav contributes until we unearth mid/attacking players capable of consistency replacing those numbers. That's been our major issue all along, we lack the creativity and fire power to beat lows blocks or high quality teams. The times we do, i.e. Europea League, it was Tav doing half the work. We also saw how the defence crumbled without Goldson so again until the area is strengthened he remains a must start player.

Doug

All things in context though, how many other HoF players joined the club while not in the Premier League, following a liquidation and journey up from the bottom division? Tav should 100% have more medals as Rangers as a team should have won at least one or two of the Cups that have been on offer, probably at least one other league too. But realistically he's always been at a handicap in that regard so it's not a fair 1-2-1 comparison.

Doug

Completely agree, our lack of creativity and goals from mid/attacking players has always been our problem. Until we have these players consistently matching or preferably outdoing the numbers Tav puts up for things like goals and assists, we'll continue to struggle.

Gazza_Hendo

still sickened thinking about it.. thanks for the therapy lads

Louch

If we are talking about Sakala being hot and cold, Kent’s shooting was that bad the ball McGregor launched into their end was closer to the goal than some of his efforts. He’s had 5 years and isn’t improving that side of his game while Celtic have half a dozen players getting in the goals regularly. Time for him to move on and something new tried as he isn’t delivering.

Spoon

Fair however the senior players have set the tone and wield an unhealthy influence on the squad for me. With the two you mention it’s really just staleness and refresh that I put them in for, neither is by any means the worst but let’s just get a new direction and style set.

Andrew Finlayson

Roofe’s injuries are unbelievable, surely the club can come to some agreement with him in the summer that would be mutually beneficial. Not his full yearly salary of course but something needs to be done … its a absolute joke.

Fraser Black

Martyn (or was it David?!) is right in terms of the approach of the club to keep harking back to what happened previously . . Even the appointment of Beale itself is an admission of the board going back to their safety blanket of the 55 season.

Barry Kerr

Good pod always enjoy listening to Martyn has he takes you away from the hot takes on FF and twitter and brings you back down to how you feel about the game itself. Think some of the Lundstram stuff was harsh he clearly wasn't fit on Sunday and should have been nowhere near the pitch. He's scored some important goals in the league for us 2 winners and an equaliser that have won us 7 points he was also excellent on Eindhoven for example. Over the full season he's not been at it but he has been playing through injury for us.
