It's not why we love the game but more and more, our conversation about football revolves around the ability of owners and boards to make an impact. How has ownership changed in football over time? Does the future involve American investment in the metaverse? And is sound business practice ever compatible with sport in the long run?

Martyn is joined by the leading expert on all things football finance, The Price Of Football's Kieran Maguire to make sense of where we've come from and where we are heading.

Kieran Maguire, he’s one of our own (according to them)

Scott Christian

Great listen, well done for getting Kieran on! Just at the end I had an American owned SPFL vision of an advert with fireworks and explosions for Smokies v Pies, perhaps the meta-verse will include smell as well as sound and vision!!

Laura McCrimmon

Great discussion this morning 2 of my fav topics finance and football.

Andy mcgowan has kieran maguire posters on his wall

I don’t think you would be in as small a minority as you think Martyn for me I would get out of Scottish football asap. Mind you I haven’t lived in Scotland for 40 years so don’t have the same need to worry about what fans of other clubs think. Great discussion, always worth listening to Kieran .

Scott Christian

I was on board in the early 90s. I’d happily recalibrate my definition of success if we were at the top table (or even secondary table) of European football.

Alan Bradley

Really enjoyed that, well done Martyn. 👏

100% agree in what kieran says about only so many world class players as in effect you have a 1st World class select and then 2nd best 3rd best and so on , I made the reference to a man utd fan that they may go longer than Liverpool did between titles as there are more clubs out there that appeal to the very " Top % " so its harder for Man United to attract enough of that Top bracket professionals in order for them to succeed and Kieran explains it very succinctly that when Man City have 4 major injuries they take in another 4 high profile players ....... Great pod Ps , I'm sure a lad i work with told me his son has watched a Liverpool through a virtual headset in his house in a small fisher town but it's a couple of minutes behind the actual live play

As someone who has listen to the Price of Football pod since the beginning I have never heard Kieran process any love for either us or them. He is a massive Brighton fan, goes to almost every game, home and away.

Jonny Wilson

Not be long until he makes the headlines on their blogs. That’s when ye really make it.

Ian Miller

Fascinating pod and interview, thanks Martyn

Liked the point about Man Utd having a golden period during the takeoff of the Premier league, its pretty much safeguarded the club for years to come. I always thought people were whimsical about Newcastle being a 'big' club due to their renaissance in the 90's, they've done nothing of note before then or up to the recent takeover. Mad when you think if Everton had just had their purple patch 10 years later we'd be talking about them like we do with Arsenal haha.

Great pod from the voice of the Price of Football Always talks sense

Scott Cameron

I'm in the same minority camp as you about wanting to see Rangers grow massively outside the restricted market we currently play.

Great listen, particularly the innovative aspiration for generating revenue through the marketisation of AI . It’s rather frightening to accept that Kieran’s assessment on this , is most likely based on factual evidence indicating AI will be influencing every aspect of human interaction a lot quicker than anyone would want. Thanks Martin. Loved the show👍🇬🇧

Ross Edgar

Great interview! Great guest! Decent host 😉

Graham Jones

A really good sign into the financial and business side of the game, Martin. Would love to hear more on this topic, because there’s more to it than the amount of time you were able to discuss in just one show. I do think there’s more to timing, though. At the end of the day, it comes down to decision making and judgement on how you utilise your resources. Man Utd had someone called Alex Ferguson who chose to rebuild the clubs football department from he bottom up. What he left was the club in his image, and it was always going to need modernising by whoever came in. It’s still not been modernised. I want t see us reach our potential as a club, but where that is in modern football is not easy to answer. It wouldn’t surprise me if UEFA tried to make the whole of Europe similar to what they have in Germany. It seems to have left German football stable over a long time, and could be one possible answer to the issues still at play with FFP.

Gary Brown

Brilliant show. Thanks Martyn and the wonderful Kieran Maguire, it is always so extremely interesting listening to you talking about the game.

Personally that technology to me is a sad concept to think of coming. It’s just another way to make humanity less connected and again moving away from the community. I live in Sydney and miss going to Ibrox but that’s because it was because of the day with my dad, friends and fellow Rangers supporters. It was a sense of being. If you can give me my seat in CR1 with a headset whilst I sit alone on my sofa in Sydney at 2am on a Sunday morning it’s not the same.
