In March 1983, a black Alfa Romeo crashed into a tree on a country lane in West Germany. The driver was a 26-year-old footballer nicknamed Iron Foot, who died two days later in hospital. It wasn’t meant to end like this.

If yer taxi driver is Bill McMurdo and yer going to defect from " east " to the " South " and you had threats on your life 🤣🤣, all joking aside another great pod and yes Berlin is an excellent city , growing up with sport in 70s GDR were a formidable country especially in Athletics/Swimming/ Gymnastics but football not so much I distinctly remember Scotland losing 1-0 I think ? And as with all Eastern Bloc countries they had a few Army/police teams , sad that his career trajectory didn't continue

Another fantastic episode ! I personally lean more on the assassination side

I read a couple of books about East German football recently and this was mentioned in them both briefly. Surely got to be that he was killed by the Stasi. Really good pod guys!

Gregg

Really enjoyed that

Scotty

Much more enjoyable than the Novichok soup 🤣

Excellent stuff boys very interesting stuff. What we learned is don’t annoy the Stasi. Defect not Deflect c’mon 😂 Should add I have a friend who lived in Berlin back in the late 70’s early 80’s and they could cross , to meet girls etc. Some of his stories are good , the girls wouldn’t meet them anywhere they could be watched , food was awful but the people were really nice. But you always had to be aware of where you walked , who was following you and you had to be back over the border , if you overstayed you were in trouble.

So which one of us graffitied Glasgow Rangers on the Berlin Wall along from Checkpoint Charlie ?

Unique and exceptionally interesting football subject. Great show thanks Steven and Kevin. I really enjoyed that. Anyone interested in finding out more should check out Cold War Conversions podcasts. Plenty episodes about East and West Berlin, plenty episodes about the Stasi and a good few about sport including football.
