New season, same old story unfortunately as Rangers turn in a wretched display at Rugby Park. David asks Martyn and Andy to help him pick over what was a dispiriting day.

What was that D:Ream song again?

These same teams set up the same way against Celtic, yet Celtic blow them away week in week out,we have been serving up the same slow turgid crap for years now,on that throw in stuff, parkhead last season, did Celtic (and I hate to mention them again) fanny about waiting for the fullback? No they took a quick throw in while we stood about and scored from it,get that shite in the bin rangers, play the moment

james whyte

Beale is under pressure. Make no mistake. Most fans when he was appointed said he has to show he can get the better of them and win at least 1 cup to prove he was the correct man for the job. Been given the overall running of incomings and got what he wanted, so thats ramped up the pressure, all on his shoulders. I hope to feck he proves me completely wrong but I fear the worst. And that is it ending with us trailing them again and searching for a new man in the dugout come New Year.

Scott Mackay

The throw in stuff drives me absolutely crazy. We in seem to have two options at a throw in; 1) take it slowly and still end up losing the ball to the opposition 2) throw it back the way where it ends up back at the goalie. When was the last time we did anything positive with a throw in?

Spoon

Great listen gents. Martin spot on with the comments around we aren’t back and the attitude being wrong. We heard it with the preseason games and us playing ‘top opposition’ those were good teams but bar maybe Newcastle they were teams we would expect to compete with if we drew them in the Europa etc We have become timid and fearful, as fans we now over hype bang average players and seem content when we get a guy who’s half decent. The recent inability of fans to properly assess the overall contributions of guys like Kent, Morelos, Helander, Roofe etc who were at times made out to be hero’s but actually spent most of their time at the club not performing to me is indicative of the lowering of standard and expectations. While the fans feelings should have no relevance to the boards they did seem to be very aligned in how they thought about things. We are miles above the rest of the league and the idea we go into any game fearful is ridiculous. David spot on by his assessment about Barasic and Lundstum slowing the game but even more worrying is the apparent inability of Beale to address this by either coaching it out then or ultimately dropping them. These little decisions eat away at belief in his judgement. Again two guys who have made occasional contributions but overall underperformed. Overall can’t disagree with anything spoken about. It’s not too late but we know the margins of error are right and all we are doing is putting more pressure on us to win the OF games to keep in touch where they should be where we can open the gap.

Iain watson

I wonder how training has been going 🤔 maybe the players are frustrated during training as the new system isn't working and going into the game didn't have any faith it would work in a game-hey presto a crap, timid performance

Jamie Gilchrist

The Manager said at the MyGers Training Day he “wanted to take the hand-break off”….to rapturous applause. He either doesnt know how to do that or, (and this is worse)….just pumps out sound bites in the hope we lap it up.

N G Ross

There’s a toxic malaise at the back. Slow, plodding, sloppy passes always ending in a panicked hoof up the park. Passing behind the man, underpaced without any point or direction and the same players been doing it for years now. Anyone new arrival is drawn into it. “This is the way we do it, innit” The lack of drive and enthusiasm is completely unacceptable.

Laura McCrimmon

Great listen guys, I had guessed right that martyn and Andy might be on this to discuss that absolute shit show on Saturday! I watched the game back yesterday as I missed the 2nd half on Saturday. For me the lack of commitment on Saturday was again my biggest issue, just no urgency, no one wanting to take a risk and this is nothing new. When I saw the team selection I just didn't get it, cantwell clearly the biggest omission for me. His preseason wasn't great not as dynamic but not the worst. For me he needs to be on the park so it's a worry that we are already saying that these games might not suit him...I just don't get that!!! I will say it again there is a mentality issue around the club and the same players just stroll about as if it's all ok and it will all come good and im sorry but we all know it doesn't as we are just making the same mistakes we have always made. I'm just sick to death of watching a game with the feeling a mistake is coming as they just can't be trusted the now not to make one!!!!

Alan Coleman

That was a tough listen. Hope that horror show is out of our system

AmoRangers

Tough listen. When you step back it is funny how reactionary we can be. One minute Beale getting his input is a good thing and the next it's disastrous and we need to get a DOF in. The truth is always probably somewhere in the middle. That being said, preseason was brutal, as was yesterday. Hopefully it can be turned around pronto.

David Innes

I was listening to the season preview on another Scottish football podcast last week - one of the Podders (ironically a Killie fan) predicted Beale wouldn’t see out the season. At the time I thought it sounded ridiculous but now my gut feeling is he was probably right. Desperate to be wrong obviously

Scott

Am I the only person slightly concerned that we have signed players who were targets back in 2018? Probably overreacting, but it just really doesn’t seem to be working.

William George Bell

I said last season when Gio was in charge that keeping Tavernier, Goldson and Barisic would get him the sack you can add Lundstram to that list. The manager failing to see this will lead to only one conclusion and his position may be untenable by Halloween never mind Christmas.

Neil McIlwraith

The manager's record in big games since he arrived is very poor. Last season he made numerous selection errors and very questionable substitutions in games. He has been heavily backed this summer but has not addressed our left back issue. It's very early days but the writing is on the wall.

Jamie Derrick

We’re talking about it being the same under last three mangers and there’s one common denominator and that’s the captain !! He’s been a good servant but needs replaced ASAP for us to move on as a team and club. The captain sets the tempo and leads, Tav has never and will never be a leader

Graham McCallum

Saturday absolutely scunnered me I got pissed on about 5 cans and took to my bed. I’m now fucking raging still. 😡

Gregg

Does a captain really set the tempo/ lead? Personally think it’s massively overblown who wears the arm band - we are utterly obsessed with it as a support. Think it was a massive thing about 40 years ago when the captain would often lead training as the manager sat in his office. Now - I just don’t see it.

Mark

I haven't had the chance to listen yet but I'm sure that Martyn will fair cheer me up! 😄

Mr J K Murray

a lot of players have played quiet a few games but seem to lack intel as footballers, brought in new players for the same price as the old players out, did not seem able to figuer out the league they are in as the same feeding the pigeons happens, not for locals, lived all me life here ect, lol, excuse but sports breaks offering £277 upwards for ticket & 1 night hotel for1st old firm game, if only the football can pick up,some continuity, as feel for locals putting up with the continious not quite der stuff la,hic

Allan Campbell

Time to change the Captain. Absolutely pissed off with the same shite excuses .is this a team that only the full backs are aloud to cross the ball and take free kicks and corners ...and his taste in music is shite .sums the guy up

Andrew Hillis

Great Listen Lads and agree with 100% that was covered and called out. Genuine question David and perhaps a crazy / stupid one but is there any chance in a professional / nice way that your next question to Mr Beale is ‘have you listened to the Extra podcast yet’? If the answer is no can you politely ask that he or one of his trusted backroom staff listen to it! Just a no brainer to get a quick feel for how the vast majority of fans are feeling. No hysterics no nastiness just the approach I use every day in my workplace when things don’t go well I.e. a need to provide Radical Candor! 👍💙 WATP!

Simon Botterill

The position of the captain in Scottish football makes a massive difference and remains very important. I have no problem in theory with Tav being Captain if we played in a more standard and modern league but it's a must to have a captain in the middle, ideally CM worse case CB, to have more influence on players around, both own and opposition and to influence and control the referee, whether people like it or not, these refs are semi professional and range from corrupt (Clancy) to ok. Tav should be club captain, Goldson as Captain and Cantwell as vice.

Andrew Whiteside

Beale is still in his first full season as a manager and you have to say he has and is making mistakes. I hope he learns fast. He sounds to me like someone commentating on events rather than shaping them.

Simon Botterill

100%. It's not ability, this notion of a difference in ability is an excuse. It's mentality, it's lesdership and Tav is an excellent ambassador for our club, a fine player and servant but we are too soft, not aggressive enough for this league and that requires a change as Captain too. We have spent the summer addressing the dated administration of the club operations but I am afraid this step is required too.

Euan Dover

They’ve shown how it can be done to devastating effect, may as well admit it. I worry we are appointing mangers like Gio and Beale for ‘continuity’ reasons I.e. the idea that getting similar managers in removes the needs for big overhauls in squad each time the manager changes. Problem is we’re then stuck with Uber cautious horseshoe type managers. We might just be making poor managerial appointments. Whatever the reason, as you say it’s been years of this dreadfully slow pass the parcel football.

Heart and Hand

Oh they know mate. I think that’s something fans worry about but in this age of 24/7 coverage and social media, they know what fans are thinking.

Gregg

Could you quantify the massive difference? I think we fetishise the position - and I’m a child of the 80s who remembers Terry butcher. I’m not being flippant but I genuinely don’t see how for example goldson has more of an impact on the opposition players if he has an armband.

David

Day 1 and up against it with very little to be optimistic about. We will know for sure where we are going under Beale on September 3rd at 2pm

Steven L

Congratulations Martyn..

Niall MacKay

Pretty much sums it up. Nothing to take forward as hope so just best to try and forget and have blind faith. Saturday felt a bit like taking Charlize Theron home and disrobing her to find an enormous penis. Ibrox on a European night can kick start our season though, I'm sure the fans will get behind the team.

Rod

Beale is a mega conservative manager, it's why we have all these holding midfielders, it's why that Tav throw in video is all over social media. He doesn't want kick free kicks, quick throw ins or quick corners. He wabts everyone to take a breath and get back into position and start again. Anyone hoping for fast high tempo football will be waiting a long time, it's not his style, never has been.

CJT

Spot on gents. One thing about Saturday it has united opinion in a way I've not seen for a while. That should be a worry for the manager, who in fairness appears to be attuned to supporters feelings (genuinely think he read FF before deciding what he's going to say at pressers at the start). When we've made our mind up as a collective we want to something different, you better deliver it or face the wrath. Hate to say it but thst lot have treated the dross on this league with utter contempt for 2 years while we treat them like there far more competent than they really are. Result is they shit it from them and fancy it against us. Time to remedy that. Over to you Mr Beale. The cat's out the bag now in terms if overall levels of performance for the past 8 months. Grab the chance this terrible performance has given you.

Miguel Sanchez

Still scunnered that Andy and Martyn have had to be wheeled out after 1 game - hope everyone enjoyed their summer break!

Jack Fletcher

I agree with many of the comments, but the lack of width against a team sitting in, is unforgiveable. If I can see this how can't Beale?

Tamus

Our efforts in the 4 friendlies suggested that Saturday was on the Cards, shots and chances made were almost non existent

Gareth Williams

100% agree, should be a CM. You watch that little jump the dyke Calum McGregor, in the refs ear all game trying to influence decisions. We lack that from Tav. I personally think he’s ran his race as a marauding full back and isn’t the player he was 2 seasons ago. That, coupled with same old excuses means I think we should be changing captain and trying out Sterling or Adam Devine (who hasn’t done anything wrong and deserves more of a chance)

Alastair McGeoch

Great pod. Totally agree with the “we are not back yet”. I think we need to remember the song “no one likes us we don’t care”; the events of 2012 made it clear just how hated we were and it feels like we haven’t fully recovered from that. We have had too many people at all levels in the club “who do care”. Right now that lot across the city are the benchmark we need to get to and surpass. They treat the entire league setup with the disdain it deserves, they revel in taking the jobbers apart, they take risks. We have had a series of managers who alter their tactics and mindset for plastic pitches, who constantly talk about respect for the opposition but never really talked about the standards we should always be setting for ourselves. Showing my age here but when did this “first and foremost we apologise to the fans” bullshit creep in after every poor result?! We need to get back to the days of you are only three bad results away from a crisis at Rangers and apologising to the fans won’t cut it. Beale had an absolute shocker on Saturday which is why the reaction has been so strong. He knows Rangers, he knows Scottish Football and he had the last half of last season to plan for the killie game essentially and that’s what he came up with! If we take a hiding in the old firm game I don’t think he comes back from that.

Alastair McGeoch

Another point is, we keep setting up with two defensive mids and not only do we keep conceding bad goals but you can argue we keep giving up chances to more limited teams. Kilmarnock overall had the better chances in the game despite their setup. The transformative signing we need is an experienced manager who can improve the players we have and raise the standards across the club. 2 out of our last three have been rookie managers essentially and Gio I just don’t think was the right guy and the right time. The next major investment needs to be in experience management when the time comes

Very Good Joinery

Still up “the captains” back side Honnest to God need to stop sticking up for him, there is a reason celtics throw ins make them goals and ours go back to the goal

Spoon

We seem to have brought in guys with energy and quickly ‘coached’ out the drive that we signed them for, totally agree it’s concerning. It applies to the young guys to.

Spoon

For me the bud difference with Beale and Gio is that he wasn’t given his players and the group he had were injured or in the huff. Beale has had his players, he had lots back from injury and had very little pressure ( the must win games he had he didn’t win ). If Beale isn’t careful this senior players group will get him sacked. I blame the players more than the manger but Beale needs to address it or he becomes part of the issue, telling us one thing when our eyes clearly see something else breaks trust with the supporters and makes it hard to buy in.

Spoon

Respectfully he gets lauded for his football experience all over the world, in different leagues at big clubs and he was instrumental in the SG regime, had his English adventure and half last season and is still making basic errors. He is Schrödingers coach currently, simultaneously running everything but responsible for nothing that goes wrong. I like the guy but he takes a lot of the fans for mugs with some of the comment he makes, we might not be involved in professional football but we can all see when the personnel or shape is wrong and it’s frustrating to watch the same mistakes play out season on season. I also hope he learns, but given his football CV he’s has had plenty of time to learn how to set up a team and pick a best 11 to fit a system.

Hendi

These 3 presenters is the dream H&H podcast line up for old moaning b******s like me, keep it up 👍😁

Very Good Joinery

The crowning turd in the water tank 😂😂😂

Douglas Innes

Total cop out by the manager in regards Cantwell , he's tried altering Canywell's position pre season to get in his new signing which hasn't worked so far and like David says He'll revert to type on Wednesday as Cantwell will start ahead of Tav on the right side and I wouldn't be surprised if Lammers is shifted centrally with Sima on the left where all 3 support Danillo , probably Raskin and Jack behind that 4

Graeme Homer

The fact that you mentioned Souttar’s mistake and only that for the goal is laughable! You’ve glossed over the fact Sima claims he has the first header and completely misses which in turn screws Souttar, then when the ball breaks to Lyon, Lundstram is up his arse rather than goal side and gave him a free shot at goal. For me them two mistakes are far worse than Souttar’s. The strikers can’t be judged when Raskin, Lundstram, Dowell, Borna all pass sideways rather than to too them. Lammers came short to try and get the ball moving and was told from Beale to get up the pitch to be completely ignored again.

Gordon Mitchell

Just on the goal I think Barasic gets a tiny touch on the ball which causes the trajectory to confuse Soutar. Before he can react its poked in the net. I think the central defence would be far less mistake ridden if the fullbacks did a better defensive job.

Stuart Currie

I have to admit over preseason more and more doubts were entering my head because of how bad the performances were, but I tried convincing myself it would get better when the real business started. Instead, we watched a continuation of preseason, and the defensive frailties were again exposed, whilst the attack remained completely toothless. 5 games in front of the fans and we have barely created any chances whatsoever. Our sharpest player, Danilo, left on the bench, done his preseason elsewhere and I don't think that's a coincidence. Add in our best player, Cantwell, also being left out the starting line-up, everything about the team selection on Saturday was a mess. Another worry is the increased frustration of Raskin, who is always looking forward, yet nobody else seems to be playing with the same intensity, awareness, or commitment as him. I'd genuinely consider giving this boy the armband, at a similar age as what Barry was, as he had all the attributes needed. I really hope there is a response this week. For Beale's sake there has to be, as that was as bad as it gets on Saturday.

Ron Jeremy

So why send out Lundstram for todays press conference! Feels like the club are just trolling us at this point

Stace1ofthePeople

A bit off topic but I mentioned this a couple of weeks ago ... Where are our goals coming from? We've not seen any through pre season or against killie. Colak, sakala, arfield, Tillman, gone. Morelos albeit not good numbers for a striker, gone. That leaves Tav (relying on an average RB) and cantwell (already being dropped out of games?) We seriously need our forward players to start banging in goals this season. We've shipped out players which was needed to refresh but I'm genuinely worried are these new players going to be any better ? So far they do not look it. Time will tell

Colin Wieland

Re Lundstram, the reality is he has been a Rangers player for 2 years now. For 5 or 6 months he was good to excellent. The rest of the time he has been bang average to piss poor. Should not be starting.

Keiren hastie

I struggle to see where adams coming from about the defence

Alistair Simpson

I got slated for saying when the team sheet came out for Saturday that I hope this is the last time we see Lundstram on a starting team sheet. I'll make no apologies for being absolutely sick of the sight of him. He's an absolute liability, and has been for over a year now.

Graeme Glennie

Bang on. It's risk that we just don't seem to be taking. It's been happening for too long and I fear the longer this happens the more hostile Ibrox will become, even this early in the season.

Tommy

A concern I have is that Celtic under Postecoglou has shown that a high intensity attacking approach to blow away teams is something that works and other clubs can’t live with. We decide to play stodgy, slow, turgid football with additional defensive mids, try and keep it tight, and maybe we’ll steal one late on. It’s ridiculous.

Doug

I don’t think that’s too much of a concern. It makes a lot of sense because our manager is the first team of of that time, so it make sense now that we’re in a place to afford them, that he’d go back to those targets. This is quite possibly the team Gerrard would have had if we’d been able to back him then.

Doug

Doesn’t make sense, cause if that was the case Tav is an exemplary leader… top scorer, second in assists, usually pushed up the park attacking, makes the most runs towards goal, most dibbles, most passes… he drags the team forward constantly… when we are down he finds a goal… he does everything to set tempo & lead the team to victory but the players around him, the Kent’s, Morelos’ etc have failed him.

Doug

I think it’s a gross revision of history to suggest Barisic has only made the “occasional” contribution & underperformed generally. “Generally” Barisic is very good, it’s the occasional errors he makes (like getting caught with a ball over the top as can happen with him), that colours people opinion of him. He’s been Top 3 for assists 3/5 seasons with us, usually in the top bunch for the league as a whole too. In those three seasons his overall play has also been excellent. Now he is stung by having patches where his form plummets off a cliff, but that was mainly during 21/22. That main patch lasted far longer that it should have & people have been suspect of him since, despite his season last year, overall being very good. He’s not faultless, he does slow the game down as he’s become more conservative with the ball in terms of that halfway line turn. On the flip side to that, he very very rarely loses possession. He’s still the best hitter of a cross in the team until any of the newbies prove otherwise. The question is whether under our new system we need a different type of player from our LB. I’d suggest that maybe we do and on that basis I do want to see Yilmaz getting bred into the team this year to try and regain that penetration towards the line. Barisic is an excellent back up/rotation though. Overall I think it’s highly unfair to say though, despite it being time to move on from Barisic and regardless of how he is right now, to suggest he’s not be an excellent servant for the club over the course of his time in its entirety.

Scott Christian

Didn’t listen on Monday as didn’t want to spoil my birthday! Anyway, good discussion. My main concern is the main one talked about; none of this is new. And the concern is that as much as Beale is clearly a smart coach, astute, learned in football, etc. he’s seen it for 3.5 years and he still thinks what might work in other leagues will work for Rangers in Scotland. The jury remains out.
