Adam and Dave join Martyn this week to discuss something of a modern football phenomenon: the DNA or personality of a football club. Does it exist or is it purely PR? If it does, when can it be of benefit and when does it act as a millstone? And also, can it ever change?

Interesting conversation given the recent issues with JB and JM.

Really enjoyed that chat and the opinions there. I think most sets of fans like to think their club has a unique DNA, from the “Way” to “Win at all Costs” to the martyrs following small clubs through thin and thinner as if that makes them a better fan than others seeking/demanding success. I think Leeds make an interesting case study insofar as their DNA as far as I understand is one of solid Yorkshire grit, fight, togetherness, etc. yet the absolutely bought in to, in fact deified Bielsa’s style as an absolute diametric opposite.

Callum Dinnen

I actually think a lot of Bielsa's style embodies those values. At an incredibly basic level, Bielsa's style is all about running hard and putting shit loads of effort in. Would love him as the manager at Rangers. At the very least, it would be fun.

This interpretation that Rangers are pragmatic & dutiful, while Celtic are expansive & entertaining has been in the narrative about Scottish football since I was a youngster. If 1986 is the Year 0 for Scottish football to the present day then message from Graeme Souness at the time seemed to baseline this story. He spoke about being patient, building from the back and taking our chances. It feels like this has been adopted in a very lazy way as being “dull” and in the world of Scottish football, the rival of Celtic must therefore be the opposite of whatever Rangers are and do. Overall in the world of sport, the concept of sporting DNA is certainly comes second to winning for most teams. If you are winning people will find ways to apply it, if losing then there are other priorities.
