I am in full on Lobbying mode for Muscat the magnificent

Colin Mathie

Andy giving the board pelters, miracles do happen lol

Calum Downham

A raise for whoever thought up that title. The new manager will have to be brave, first thing he should look at is the captaincy. We have suffered the same problems for seasons now, the only constants throughout that time is Tav and Goldson. I've wondered if Gerrard would have made Tav the captain back in 2018 if the squad contained a stronger group of players - absolutely not. Tav happened to be the best player in that group, imo that's why he got the nod Our problems aren't solved by a simple change such as that, but we need to stop persisting with mentality lacking players with a trophy haul the same count as players who played for St Johnstone FC during their double season

Scott Gall

If Gallows Humour is on the menu, this flagships title is delicious.

Andrew Whiteside

I don’t blame the manager for not being good enough. I blame the board for offering him it in the first place. It not a job for inexperience. Gerrard is the exception given the place in time.

Stuart McNiven

Beale said so much because he loves the sound of his own voice. Also, as an addendum, bin the pre-match interviews. Warburton did them too and they're pointless.

Robert White

Beale became a Rangers man. He wanted us to win and he tried his best. Sadly, hasn't worked at all. We need stability. We should go for McInnes and focus on winning in Scotland.

Douglas Innes

If your wife changed her living room decor every year you'd get pissed off likewise if a husband changed his car every year the wife would get pissed off ...... we can't keep this up every season

Brian Rae

If there's even a hint that we can get Gallardo, we should break the bank and get him in, even if it means cutting budgets elsewhere.

Russ

I'm not being funny but if Gallardo comes to Ibrox it'll be the biggest appointment in Scottish football in decades. It'll never fucking happen like.

scott burnett

I think after the Celtic game he was probably told you need to win every game until the next international break or you're done. Potentially the board have thought they backed their man and it was too early to sack him after backing him. An experienced manager is a must, break the bank and get Gallardo, it'll be the only opportunity we have to get a guy with that experience.

John Hood

If we can get a fully fit squad, because there are good players at the club, a new manager will be able to get better performance from them, this should also equate to winning games. The problem - Michael Beale - has been removed. It can only get better.

He’s rejected Ajax, Lyon and Marseille already this season. He isn’t touching us in our current state unfortunately

John Buchan

Prefect title for the podcast 🇬🇧🇬🇧

Right on Andy ,pure negligence in not hiring a DOF 6months ago

We should probably stop bringing in deeply flawed candidates or giving decent ones zero support. The idea we can’t change a guy because he has been a mistake is flawed logic, the board made a lazy choice last time or didn’t properly due diligence recruiting Beale and with Gio they didn’t support the man they hired with signings or against a huffy squad. Two different guys, two different sets of problems but both times keeping them was untenable and ultimately the board also shoulder blame. Football management isn’t a science or managers would never move on but the good boards identify issues at an early stage when there are clear red flags or progress isn’t lining up with where it should be and act, this will be the last time anyone in the board can avoid the flak if they don’t get the right guy in. Doesn’t mean success day one, but it needs to be a guy who’s showing progress, implementing a style and moving things forward. It’s not easy but given our resources it shouldn’t be as hard as we have made it up until now. Fans can have their preference but at a base level we would all accept a guy with some character, technical knowledge and a plan even it wasn’t all of our first choice just getting someone competent across the core elements of modern management shouldnt be beyond us.

Jim McCutcheon

Thanks guys another very good pod also educational as a bonus 👍 😀

Russ

Can't pretend I've watched his teams all that much but Pitso Mosimane is a stellar candidate if we're willing to look outside of Europe. Revolutionised African football by the sounds of it, won the African Champions league a few times too. Wonder if Adam or anyone else is more clued up on him?

David Ashmead

Feeling more upbeat after that 👊🏻🇬🇧

Paul Holst

From the Sage of Saltcoats to Monsieur Sans Froid. Life comes at you fast Andy…

Louch

Question suggestion for Davis this week- has he been using any his experience from international camps in getting a new message across to players in a short period of time?

Alastair McGeoch

At the end of the day appointing Beale with three months managerial experience in his own right was a massive gamble and it has backfired big time. We haven’t had an experienced manager really since Walters last spell. Since then we’ve had Ally (rookie), warbuton (second job), Pedro (nut job), Gerrard (rookie), Gio (most experienced) and Beale (rookie). You can see the difference Rogers made in his first spell at Celtic after delia. Comfortable as the figurehead, took all the focus and attention off the players but crucially set standards and ensured the players knew their roles and tactics on the pitch. If we can appoint someone who can do something similar I am not quite ready to give up on the league just yet but if we go for another left field/quick fix appointment then we know we will be back here in a year.

Spoon

Excellent pod gents agree with majority of what’s been said. I sympathise with the board in making an appointment but as David said it’s not only their job but it’s their responsibility having got us to this point. I would like a manager with a domestic UK CV but I wouldn’t be adverse to having a guy from the EPL if they had some character and a decent record. I relieve the right guy can get more out this squad especially if as the podders mention they have a ruthless streak with the players and the winner mentality. Avoid the mistakes made in terms of either not supporting the manager with signings (Gio) or signing a management team with zero top level chops and I’m sure people will give the next guy a chance. If early on there’s a product forming that’s got potential I think most folk will get onboard, it’s been made to sound like we are over bearing and too demanding but we just want to see a path to potential silverware, nobody needs it to be easy but incremental progress is essential. Lots of this is the hangover of 55 where instead of pushing on the club as an entity sat back and thought we had cracked it and could coast. If we pick up the tools again and look like we are up for a fight I’m sure things turn around and if the interim team can keep things from getting worse it’s actually not a terrible platform for a new guy.

Angus Mackay

Really good listen, boys. Is Ralph Hasenhüttl in career rebuilding mode beyond our reach? Has team building experience and cn get a team to punch up. I agree that we need a generation shift in the team. No matter what people have done we need to move on now.

Craig Kennedy

Good listen, but I keep hearing about the league being too far away from us now. Bollocks to that. Its 7 points!! That shower of shit from the other side are mince and the only reason they're fans aren't throwing sharks about is because we're so bad right now. They are one defeat away from a melt down. We get the right manager in that knows how to coach our lot and actually goes for the throat against them and other teams and we will be ok.

Andrew Meldrum

Lots of good stuff. Worth pointing out that the next coach is bound to come in talking about how there are lots of good players, and when asked about Tav, Goldson, Jack whoever they will praise them. That's normal, it's what happens next that counts. However, what I don't understand is why each time the manager goes we automatically sack all the coaches. Yes, most managers want to bring in their own team but not all. We could at least hold off, keep them in the building until we know, it might help Davis out too. And if they refuse - well the payoff goes down.

Callum Dinnen

My theory is that the board got spooked by Wolves approaching Beale around this time last year. I reckon there had maybe been an informal chat where Beale mentioned a possible ambition to return as manager (he may even have posted something to that effect on Instagram when he left first time round), perhaps with an understanding the club would keep an eye on him and earmark him as Gio's successor, with the plan being when Gio moved onto bigger things that Beale would be ready to step up. Wolves' approach changed that IMO, I think the board felt that Beale would rapidly be out of our reach if he moved to the Premier League and panicked, sacking Gio to appoint Beale while we could.

Billy Forrester

The sage of salcoats always makes us feel more upbeat. Not only a fantastic former bus convenor but the best podder on H&H. 💪💙

Adam

Teams simply didn't fear us at all under Beale. You could see that. As an attacking unit, they didn't worry about us. They worried about individual players, but never about the way we set about teams tactically. The opposition knew if they kept us quite for the first twenty minutes or so, then they'd have an easy afternoon. We also have an absolutely uncanny ability to strip any attacking player we sign of his ability to attack. Danilo, flying in pre season for Feyenoord, on his Rangers debut, he looked like he'd never seen a football before. Same with midfielders, signed numerous aggressive, neat and tidy passers of the ball and they quickly became side to side merchants under Beale. Raskin was bursting forward and getting involved in build up play at the tail end of last season, so what does Beale do this summer? Sticks him at the base of midfield and asks him to sit deep. The mind really does boggle. The way he decided to turn Cantwell into a box to box midfielder over the summer, despite his best performances being as a 10.

Ian

How come a few year ago a director of football was a joke position, now it’s essential, really. What would Walter say?

Alex Hood

David, you were quick to move on from any analysis of Gio’s sacking, which is fair enough. That’s not what the show is about. However. , I think we as a support need to admit we have got this one wrong. Gio was absolutely shafted and we’re reaping what we sowed. We asked for the removal of a manager and a sporting director who put us in a good position financially with players to trade and European success. The Board did not back Gio and he should have been given that financial backing because he brought that money into the club. Instead, we gave millions to Beale (who displayed a total lack of class in the lead up to Gio’s removal) and he spent it on Dessers and co. Karma has bitten us on the arse.

Tamus

I would take Neil Warnock and KT as his number 2

Tamus
>>118931740

We have slagged Billy McNeill for years for back stabbing Davy Hay in a Tesco carpark, what delboy Beale did to Gio with his Louden stunt was far worse - absolute fraudster who played to the Masses, a sleekit wizard of Oz, nothing more

ian laird

sam allardyce for me

KennyY

For me the players should hold a higher percentage of the blame for this mess than the manager but ultimately it’s the manager and his team that pay the price. It’s appalling and embarrassing from our support to be singling out one player and booing him. Thought we were better than that but clearly not. He’s signed a long term deal so behaving like that isn’t going to help anyone.

Raskul

Andy's right of course in regards to DOF, it shouod totally be up to the board to get in a head of football and they should be given the distance to enable them to do so. Imperatively however, we need more football minded people, and a DOF who the board will expect to be made uncomfortable in certain positions and decisions, should be considered. The spread of shares is a good thing but we do now have more businessmen than football men.

CJT
>>118931740

GVB sacking also gave fans an expectation around when a manager should be sacked. Apparently European finals and trophy wins aren't good enough when you have a shakey period driven by an injury crisis. Who could have guessed that'd set a precedent?

Hendi

Ross spoke about the fans publicly voicing their opinion of his on field decision making. The first time this happened was when he gifted a goal to Thistle. I genuinely believe that was the first domino to fall. I knew that day he wasn't cut out for the job.

Teddy Lasso

Finally people are seeing the Tav and Goldson problem. When Beale said last year he knew what had to be done, I believed him. He clearly did not, hopefully next manager bins them off and people realise the benefit.

Andy McGowan
>>118941659

On Saturday, Tavernier basically laid on two clear cut chances for Dessers then Cifuentes because of his quality. I don't buy this narrative that he and Goldson are the issues. It's patent nonsense and actually takes away from any discussion on the real issues. If we place so much faith in football men opinions then we should ask them about this. I'd wager that most would shake their head at the concept

Heart and Hand
>>118931740

I think Gio got a raw deal as I said but I still don’t think he was going to turn it round. The problem is next guy made it worse.

Gregg
>>118941659

Spot on andy - look at the difference last year when goldson was injured as well. People have their viewpoint and look to shoehorn it in to every situation - between that and the captaincy it’s mental

Louch
>>118911363

He’d probably have moved with the times like he did in his first absence. Anyone who doesn’t change as football changes gets left behind. Look where we are from not having one for just 6 months

Teddy Lasso
>>118941659

My comment was flippant and rushed because I was on the move and on my phone so I will now elaborate on my thoughts. I predicted when Gio lost his job that until Tav/Goldson move on then nothing will change and I stand by it. It isn't as simple as ability and I don't think any new manager should do it on day one, however Beale had that opportunity and chose not to. I hear a lot of talk about the armband being only 'symbolic' which on the face of it is accurate but if Beale had given the armband to someone else I would have been happier with that. I watched the Tubes and Ange Golf Life video with Cantwell a few months back and Jimmy Bullard got to a discussion about free kicks, pens etc. and there was a cringe moment where Cantwell told him that Tav takes everything, he's been there for years, club captain etc. and it was obvious that this wasn't your typical media interview, this was a relaxed conversation, you could see Cantwell is being held back, he is deferring to his captain so it really isn't as just symbolic as we think it is and at our club (they all had a history lesson recently) the captain is hugely important and though I appreciate that in the modern game it isn't seen that way, at our club regardless of era it is something very special, our players know it and definitely respect it more than your average club. I think our squad look to Tav and Goldson far too often, and it won't stop until they are away. We wonder why Tav put's so many crosses in, it's because he is the go to guy. Goldson might be the best CB at the club and what that says about the rest is up for debate but Beale lost his job for not winning the big games, Tav and Goldson have cost us in so many big games I have lost count, but it is deeper than that. If we really want a fresh start, a different outlook, then for me they will both have to move on, moving the armband or one of them on just won't be enough now, and i will stand by it.

Jane

Andy makes a good point. I agree - haven't seen the support as jaded or disinterested for a long time. The managerial appointment needs to go some way to solving this.

Gregg
>>118941659

Tav has also won us many games - for balance. I watched the cantwell thing as well - he has a terrible golf swing - and didn’t take it them same way you have to be honest.

Lynsey Roddy
>>118893255

‘Pedro (nut job)’ made me choke on my coffee due to laughter! Thank you, it was much needed!

Alastair McGeoch
>>118941659

I think it’s less about their moments of quality on the pitch. Davis and Rae coming in and it was mentioned on a recent pod about they will be able to let the players know the standards needed. Tav should be able to communicate that by now, but when you see the same “dissapointed” and “we need to learn from this and we know what we need to do” and then do the same things over and over again that’s the problem. Recent pods have talked about the need to change the culture and the captaincy is a key part of that. Harsh as that is

Russ

Tbh that duel between Nouble(s?) and Tav v Livi in the cup where Tav ended up arse over tit on the deck was pretty painful to watch, he's always had a gammy style but now his legs have gone as well. If the next gaffer plays with width and energy from the flanks, both him and Borna have to be phased out. The reason we spam crosses from deep so much is because they can barely make the byline as is and have to cross early.

Samantha Paterson

The lack of people now in the building of have basic football running experience off the park, not just ex players or managers in positions. Bisgrove has got rid of best part 30 years of football experience from the board, a big worry.

Ross Hutton
>>118941602

It was for me mate. I was furious at the time and haven't really changed my mind on it since

Spoon
>>118941659

Think the issue is less about quality as both have been excellent servants, for me it’s about staleness. Most clubs move managers and players on fair more regularly than we do, we are very sentimental and always have been as a club. Things are meant to be cyclical to keep things fresh, the tactics, the staff, the players in some cases have been around for too long. Difficult to make changes to be fair when finances are tight, injuries make you rely on the old guard etc but to me the style and tactics could have evolved and we might have extended the life span of some of the longer serving players. Lots of miles and minutes on those two since they came to us and it’s to their credit but it probably has made us a bit predictable.

Bob MacCallum

I want to see Andy in a beret at the NEH live show. Sunglasses optional.
