As editor in chief of Get French Football News, writer for Ligue 1 itself, and South of France resident, Luke Entwistle is well placed to discuss Philippe Clement's time at Monaco.

This show will dig deep into his tactical approach at Monaco as we gain a unique insight into what he expects from his teams.

Amongst many things, we discuss:

  • Focus on player roles instead of formations
  • Approach in and out of possession
  • Adapting tactics to suit his players more than the opposition
  • Importance of balance
  • High pressing and attacking rotations to create space
  • Set Piece improvement

Very interesting & worthwhile listen Adam. With most things, context is the key when assessing his overall performance in France. If he has learned from his own failings in France like I suspect/hope he has then I for one am glad he has already had that experience rather than us recruiting him directly from a winning situation in Belgium. Also felt the contribution from Luke on this podcast was more balanced & clinical than 1st scouting report.

Great pod and excellent questions Adam. How important a high press will be in 90% of our games is debatable. Hoofball doesn't really lend itself to this approach. Fast attacks, before the opponent has got back into position, have to be the way to go but I fear we will need significant personell changes before PC can implement that style.

Angus Mackay

Another fantastic, Pod, Adam. Thanks for all the time and thought you put into this, it really adds so much to the experience of following the club. Although I did get cold sweats a bit when he was talking about PC having no answer for the low blocks :-/

Alan Anderson

Nothing much to be positive about 😮 Worrying.

Paul

Good listen Adam. I must admit that hearing about his difficulties against defensive teams gives me the fear. Sounds depressingly familiar: 70% possession but doing nothing with it.

The worry over the low blocks goes a bit overboard regarding tactics from the manager I think, our main problem has not been creating chances it's taking them coz we always create enough to at least get a couple and that would bring every team out so we can exploit them, that's all the other mob do, take one or 2 of the earlier chances they make.

Brian McLatchie

Your guest reminded me of the Feyenoord supporter who James Forrest spoke.to after the appt of GVB, he told us what was coming, what kind of football we would see and he was right

Stuart Campbell

Not convinced that's the case. We don't make enough high quality chances IMO as don't cut teams open enough

8luenose1872

We create enough chances to win these games easy. No teams constantly create chances against heavy low block teams, they just take a couple of the ones they do then punish them once they have to come out of the low block. No team regularly cuts open low blocks, I mean that's why they do it, we just need to be more clinical with the chances we do make.

Further confirmation in my opinion that we appointed the wrong guy. Not that I’m bitter or anything

George Harrison

Thoroughly enjoyed that Adam ! Fellow listeners, can we please have less of the negative comments at this point and get behind the new manager ! 🤔

John Smith

I’ll back him George but that hasn’t changed my gut instinct about him. If he starts winning I’ll change my tune

George Joyce

Adam are u getting any other 1's from his time in Belgium. Might be more optimistic 😆

scobihughes

Oaft that’s taken the wind right out my sails for this weekend. Any chance of getting another Belgian guy on.

Gregg

Muscat got sacked by a Belgian team - sure they wouldn’t be too complimentary about him

John Smith

Totally agree Gregg. And as you know, I’m very biased. But I do think that was a very different situation.

Ross

Great pod. The content re the various candidates and then more recently detailed background re Clement has been excellent.

Cheers Adam, weans are greeting 😂

Gary Brown

Thanks for this pod Adam and for all your hard work in this series and the managerial scouting series too. Very informative qnd much appreciated.

Great work Adam over the last couple of weeks with these reports. Slightly reminiscent of a Feyenoord /Gio podcast which was scarily true. Hopefully we can get fast starts and low blocks don't become an issue for PC.Keep Phil'ieving 🇧🇪

Callum Dinnen

The failure against Braga is interesting as they were one of the worst 'good' teams I've ever seen in Europe at Ibrox. If we'd won the tie under Gio 6-0, it wouldn't have flattered us.

Callum Dinnen

Also it might just be me but I'm not getting the same negative vibes as everyone else. He wasn't a 100% success at Monaco; that should surely be screamingly obvious or we wouldn't have appointed him in the middle of a season. 3rd and 6th with Monaco is pretty respectable; it's not like he was fired with Monaco in 15th place playing shite football. The fact he commits to playing attacking football is a big positive in my book.

Steven Harvey

These reports from his time in France are giving me the absolute FEAR!!!!! Is it too late to call Muscat??! 😂🙈

John Smith

Regretfully so Steven. The board had their chance and they disrespected my client. Luckily he’ll be ready and willing next year 😉
