TALKING ABOUT TALKING with intonational phonologist, Dr. Nicole Holliday aka @mixedlinguist. Obama's orations, accent adoption, code-switching, vocal fry, the sociolinguistic uses and grammar of African-American English (AAE) and ol' Pops gives you an important French lesson.

Nicole is amazing and I was so lucky to sit down with her. I WANT HER TO GIVE SO MANY TED TALKS.

Also if you like traffic, you'll LOVE this episode. Speaking of which, I am typing this from the sky, my friends. It's been a 22-hour work day shooting for CBS in Detroit and I'm flying back to LA and your donations make the $26 in-flight wifi possible/justifiable, because I really wanted to get this up on time.

So thank you, Patrons, for being like family to this podcast. For this episode, I wanted to try my hardest to do the topic justice and although I wish this were a 10-part episode arc, I think everyone can get a lot out of this hour with Dr. Nicole Holliday.

And sorry for all the times I say fuck. But not really.

34 - Phonology with Nicole Holliday

Vocal fry. Code switching. Black Twitter. Valley girls. Culture vultures. WE'RE TALKING ABOUT TALKING. Alie battles traffic to sit down with linguistics professor Dr. Nicole Holliday about intonational phonology: how tones and pitch help us bond with others and construct identities. Inspired in part

So so sooooo interesting. The part about vocal fry made me think about the episode "S1E3: Just Shut Up" of the podcast Strong opinions loosely held. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND. The description of the episode goes like this : " Vocal fry. Upspeak. Overuse of qualifiers — it seems like we can’t open our mouths (we being Women) without being criticized. Elisa Kreisinger talks to public radio journalist Sally Herships and politics writer Amanda Marcotte and asks: If a woman is saying something intelligent and all you hear is the way it’s being said, is that her problem or yours?". Alie, I'm sure you would love it.

Very interesting, and as a woman it makes me think about how I have been insecure at times feeling like my voice is too low. Damn you societal expectations!

I think it was This American Life that did a thing about vocal fry a couple years ago. I’ve noticed even Ira Glass has upspeak now, but the very worst is the host of S-Town. I almost didn’t finish that podcast bc of it. Anyway, thanks for the recommendation.

Loved this episode. The parts about the African american language difference was seriously eye opening. You should make another appointment with her just to answer questions!
