Interviewing a magical human and NASA JPL scientist named Jennifer Buz about friggin' MARS tomorrow. I am so excited I can't even deal. Should I make it a two-parter?

Get familiar with her here, if you please: http://jnnfr.bz

I have so many questions! But first, how realistic are the things that happen in "The Martian" book by Andy Weir?

Abobymous

What about the recent discovery of organic material on Mars? So exciting!

Christina Shuy

yes, make it a 2 parter. I would like to know how much she is paying attention to the Mars missions, and if so, what is her favorite thing?

Chloë Anaya

Realistically, how close are we, both politically and technically, to a manned mission to Mars happening?

Jessica Tubesing

Was the God of War being named Mars a suitable choice?

Greg

In light of the giant duststorm that seems to have knocked out the Curiosity, what is the most useful-to-humanity-right-now information that it has collected since it's arrival to the Red Planet so far?

Stu

Yes please on the two-parter front! What's the latest stance on Mars habitability with regards to things such as bone density deterioration and other physiological aspects from reduced gravity / cosmic radiation? Is it actually a viable prospect to haul our asses up there? P.S. Jennifer's website is beautiful. Combination of Areology, Teuthology and Herpetology!

Aeriel Belk

I just read an article about how communication with the Opportunity Rover has been out since the 10th because of massive dust storms. What are the potential consequences of this? What if it doesn't get cleared after the storm passes?

Kai Tone Rossow

Why are Earth's moon and Mars' moons so different?

Dustin Mills

Can I bring my dog to Mars? (She is a miniature pinscher, about 17lbs. with big brown eyes). What will she need to survive?

Alex Anderson

WOWOWOW YES 2 PARTER PLS. Also, how much do we know about the geological timescale of Mars, and how much can we infer about it from Earth?

Amy Capistran

I love watching things like curiosity landing or space x launches. One thing I notice is the preponderance of white dudes in room. Is this changing at all and are there particular challenges as a woman of color in the field?

Mikey

The fact that Curiosity sings Happy Birthday to itself every makes me cry uncontrollably, I just thought you should know. Anyway thanks for bringing up robots, would it be possible or even make sense to have another rover on Mars for more data logging and maybe as a kind of check and balance for information that’s been found by Curiosity? I hope that made sense.

How legit do Elon Musk’s goals for getting to and colonizing Mars seem to be? From the perspective of someone who knows something about mars... unlike me who can’t recognize a mars bar on halloween

Ashley Bolduc

Has she played Terraforming Mars (board game)? If so, does she love it?

Jen Durbin

How scientifically accurate is the Martian? Is there anything you would have done different if you were in that crazy position?

Stu

Follow up question - Can JPL please send a small robot along with the next mission that can administer a hug to Curiosity?

Taylor Mathis

How much of Mars do we have mapped?

Anna Thompson

If you could go to Mars what one thing would you bring outside of assigned science stuff?

John Worster

What are the temperature extremes on Mars? High and low temps.

John Worster

Do you think the new RS 25 engines will be part of the rocket that takes people to Mars, or will it be something completely different?

2026-09-15 06:00 How likely is it that we can create a sustainable living environment on Mars? Like regenerating oxygen supplies, food, etc. Are we gonna have to do some Matt Damon the Martian shit and mix all of our poop into the Mars dirt to create arable soil?

Matthew Weldon-Gamble

I have two girls, 6 and 8 who just LOST THEIR SHIT on a trip to NASA in Florida. What advice would you give to anyone (especially girls) who want to visit Mars when they grow up?

Ronda Grizzle

Follow up question: will our bacteria from skin and gut survive on Mars? Is there concern about contaminating the Martian environment with earth bacteria?

Jack Kelleher

Can things we are learning about sustaining life on Mars help us “clean up” our climate change issues?

Mark Donahue

Very cool! As a side note, I love how you find so many female scientists for the show. Representation is so important. Hopefully it could inspire future scientists!

Al Martinez

Did Moore's ever have a atmosphere capable of supporting life in would it be possible to terreform the planet so it could support life now.

Al Martinez

Also what is the latest ETA for a manned mission to Mars?

Danny Kang

God/gods were once the center of the universe, then the Earth, then the Sun, then our solar system, etc. If we find life, or signs of life on Mars, how do you think people will take it? How would you hope they take it?

Jeffrey Katz

Is it worth the trouble and expense to send humans to Mars or should we put our effort into more sophisticated robots.

Danny Kang

Alternate question: Is it impossible to have a water balloon fight on Mars do to the atmosphere?

Rachel von Morrigan

What is it about Mars that makes us so antsy to put a settlement/base there? Is it simply proximity or is it something more? Bonus question: What’s up with terraforming? Is that a for real thing that can be done?

AngieB

in the podcast The Habitat they have a simulation of Mars life. Is it accurate? How long is the experiment going and how long have they already done. Curious what helpful info they have found out. Are they planning to have a manned mission?

Laura Mulligan

If you were to get bored or tired of Mars, what other planets would you like to study and why?

AngieB

Yes, make it a 2 parter!!

AngieB

Do you think water is necessary for life on mars? I’ve often wondered if just because WE need water to survive, maybe other “alien” species do not. Are there any other alternate possibilities of what life could like outside of What we experience on Earth?

AngieB

The board game Terraforming Mars is super fun. My husband says the most very basic premise of the game, needing a certain amount of water, a certain amount of oxygen in the air (14%), and a certain temperature (8 C) are accurate numbers that could sustain life on mars. Is this true? 😜

AngieB

Which planet or other space object is Mars most similar to?

Stefan Titus

Everyone keeps talking about colonizing Mars, but I know it has some major hurdles. Are there any other celestial bodies that we could be talking about colonizing?

Olaf Doschke

Is it true the mars day (24:37 h) better suits the human biorythm?

Michelle Sullivan

JPL is so freakin' cool, are you excited every time you walk through the doors? And do you think that there's actually a strain of cyanobacteria that could survive on Mars?

Amanda Nyren

Definitely make this a two parter Alie! So many questions! What is your favorite geologic feature or process on Mars? What unanswered question about Mars would you answer if you could wave a magic wand and instantly know all the facts? Would you go to Mars if you could?

iolanthe

Is there life on Mars?

Christopher Barley

Definitely a two part episode. Like everyone else, I am curious about the feasibility of a manned (or womaned) mission to Mars in my lifetime and what hurdles prevent us from going. (biological, technological and fiscal) Also I seem to remember that the northern half of Mars is completely smooth while the southern half is full of craters. Do we understand what caused this to happen and why the inconsistency?

Tom Maher

Thoughts on Elon Musk and nuking the poles of the planet?

Casey Handmer

What aspect of Mars do you study and how many people in the world are in your Mars studying family?

Sandy Moore

How much time and money do we spend studying Mars and the earth's oceans. Should we focus on one more than the other when it comes to making life better for life on earth?

Craig Curry

Please ask what is going on with the storm on Mars and losing contact with Curiosity. Is this different from other times we have lost contact? I love that little machine and would be devastated if it was gone forever.

Billy Marino

Voting yes on that two-parter! And for the question: From data we've gathered so far, have we learned anything from Mars that has significantly changed the way we understand Earth?

Bob

Given an opportunity would you be a mars colonist?

Ali Blackwood Mead

Do you enjoy science fiction featuring Mars - and if so, which book/movie/show/comic/etc is your favorite? Which is the most accurate and which was laugh-out-loud wrong?

Tony Plocido

Yes Mars is named after a Roman God, but if you could name it, what would you choose?

Beren

Since there was once water on Mars, is Mars dust as horrifically nasty as lunar dust? (dust on the moon had no water to erode the edges and spikes so it's super damaging to equipment and fleshy bits like, say, lungs)

KATHRYN ESHAM

What are the moral implications of assuming we have the rights to colonize another planet? If Mars is successful, which planet do you think we'll try to conquer next provided we can develop the appropriate technology?

Jorge Barnett

Massive dust storms seem to be relevant to Mars habitability. Does the ground/surface have any behavior that presents a significant risk for any long-term missions? (i.e., earthquake-type movements, displacements, instability, etc.)

Catherine Woodrow

If microbial life were to be found on mars, which type of bacteria do you think would be the most likely to be found?

Colette Ayers

this is so important and all I can think about is Bowie..is there life on Mars?

Justin M Gifford

In terms of terraforming or colonizing Mars, I've heard that the makeup of Marian soil is problematic, specifically something about the salts in the soil being really nasty? Thanks!

Kevin McPhillips

Five year old Finley McPhillips wants to know: Would a helium balloon still float on Mars?

Christa Avampato

Why is Iceland a good location for future Mars travelers to train?

Ted Vician

Predictions on the duration of the current duststorm and any expectations on effect on the rovers.

Ted Vician

Also, what are the design features of Mars habitats or robotic installations to deal with the dust long-term?

Allan

Q: If EVER the magnetic field on Mars can be artificially increased, is it possible for it to have an atmosphere that resembles the one on Earth (can it be inhibitable without any aides)? Do you foresee that happening?

Brooke Danielle

What can/have we learned about Earth from studying Mars?

Sarah Preston

Are you involved in the Lunar Outpost project? How do you think that is going to change the way we think about the limits of space exploration and potential colonization?

Elizabeth Bassett

Related: Should we be settling or putting a base on Mars (or other planets/etc.)? Should there be limitations to how many people/where/for how long? Do scientists in this field lean toward settlement/not settlement? Can we study Mars properly without having a permanent base?
