Dear Patrons,

I am delighted to invite you to the world premiere of the Brumaire Coup!

If you wondered how Epic History was going to make politics as exciting and dramatic as one of Napoleon's battles - I was wondering the same thing. Happily, Patrick and Mike have created an absolutely brilliant video packed with great moments, which I hope you'll enjoy as much as I did.

No newsletter this week, as we're flat out on delivering videos. Wabash Part 1 is also going to be with you very soon. I want to warn you in advance, because I know some people are going to be shocked by this - Wabash features a narrator who is not Charles! His name is Chuck, he's from Ohio and he's got a great voice, and I hope you'll like him. No one is replacing Charles - Chuck just felt right for this project.

Typos for Merch is in effect, please let us know if you spot one! Also, we're keen to give the prizes out a bit more widely - so preference will be given to those who have not recently won prizes already!

Thank you as ever for supporting the channel. You are truly the reason we're able to take such deep dives into topics like this, and spend so much time perfecting animations, images, music and everything else. Enjoy the video. More updates and Wabash coming soon!

This is honestly one of my favorite historical coups in history, I am so glad to see it finally being covered!

Michael L

Great Video as always!

Jerome Kelly

I CANT WAIT TO WATCH THIS TONIGHT

MitchyCool

Yes!! YAAAAS!! FINALLY!!

Medin Burnic

I can't wait to watch this!!!

Enzo

I know this shit boutta cook 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Gage Hardesty

Found something you missed it wasn't just Joubert, Macdonald, and Moreau, but actually another person Jean Bernadotte so wanted to point it out.

Gage Hardesty

When you were pointing out Sieyes about who to choose his sword.

chris MacDonald

11:29 It says 16th Brumaire but its actually the 18th Brumaire !!

HyperSonicX

WHAT AN EPISODE! I was enraptured front to back, the way you guys deliver all the political scheming is unparallelled.

Enzo

So glad that I contribute to this - money spectacularly spent!

Filip Petrovic

Very well done. This one was even better than normal in my opinion.

Stephane Michel

"In what condition I left France and in what condition I found it ! I left you peace and I find war again !" Napoléon Bonaparte

Gage Hardesty

At 4:20 the name Jean Francois Moulin his actual full name is "Jean Francois Auguste Moulin" in case you forgot to put it in.

Gage Hardesty

At 5:34 maybe have the word could not be couldn't because it sounds more better when putting it like that.

Gage Hardesty

At 7:39 didn't you name Talleyrand "Charles Maurice de Talleyrand" because that's what you had in Napoleon in Egypt part 1

Hoshizorista

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAH What a way to end the week! lets goooooooooooo!

TankerBricks

Just the perfect release to watch when I finish work lol.

Gage Hardesty

At 14:08 there are two names for Francois Lefebvre being that one's a historian and this guy so put his full name "Francois Joseph Lefebvre" to reduce confusion.

DC*

Damn that was good. Wish you folks wrote the movie lol.

Jan Smigiel

Oh my God, it is awesome episode!

Andrew Herbst

GREAT episode! And that music at 17:50--WOW!

Gage Hardesty

At 24:59 I agree with the words Assault on the liberty of Frenchman but that's not how he said it, Lucien said in his words, "I swear to God! I will kill my brother if he betrays the freedom of the Frenchman!" Is literally what he said in case you need to correct.

KuhlerKarl

Brilliant Video! In the Video you say that Napoleon returned to Egypt after 500 Days. Did say 500 because it sounds better? Because I belive it were only about 470. Anyway, great video!

notaidan

Wow. The narration and visuals were just absolutely enthralling. This was incredible.

Gage Hardesty

At 7 seconds I think the newspaper would've been October 1799 because Bonaparte was the figurehead that could save France from ruin or if I'm wrong you can call me out on that, but other than that that's all the typos I could find (potentially) hope you take the time to see them.

Lord John 🇵🇱💚

Absolutely beautiful! Made Me feel upbeat after a rough one at the job today. Thank You so much sincerely appreciate this all previous works & future ones to come!!!! Best regards Lord John 💚

TankerBricks

Good video! Not related to the video but something I wanted to share- French Expedition to Ireland in '96 under Hoche, second in command Emmanuel de Grouchy. When the fleet is dispersed, the chief of staff is desperate to land, but Grouchy being Grouchy, waits for Hoche, squandering the opportunity. The Chief of Staff considered throwing Grouchy overboard. He did. Like he contemplated it.... Had that happened the Waterloo campaign might of gone different? Your thoughts???

EpicHistoryTV

The original plan was to act on 16, but they postponed the coup..

EpicHistoryTV

If we're talking literally, he said it in French! Your translation is just slightly different.

Gage Hardesty

Well it's what I've seen from different sources and some have said betray rather than Assault but if that's what he actually said then sorry.

Gage Hardesty

Yep it was supposed to be originally the 16th of Brumaire but because of a 48 hour delay that's why it started on the 18th Brumaire.

Gage Hardesty

And of course he definitely said it in French I was just trying to give out the actual English version of what Lucien said because like I said a lot of sources have made that so.

Gage Hardesty

Found something, at 13:19 the time the coup began was actually 7:00 am not 6:00 in case you needed to know.

Sergei

It's not Wabash it the Wabash because the battle is known as the battle of the Wabash

Death metal Drummer 93

13:08 "Conversation among soldiers (Overhead) by police spy. Should be overheard. Love the video! amazing quality

Medin Burnic

Holy cow! This may have to be one of the most impressive, visually stunning videos to date by Epic History. I really love the visuals around the time when Lucien is speaking. The way the soldiers, in an utter whim, after Lucien pointed the sword at his brother, just charge into Council like that.. It's just brilliant and really highlights fealty at that moment. It's just unfortunate I keep thinking of how strangely and pathetically the Napoleon movie by Ridley Scott showed it. Can't wait for more Napoleon from EH!

Hisham Yousif

All the hallmarks of what makes these videos great -- the traditional paintings, the aesthetics, the narration, the script, and the music all combine for a phenomenal video. The drama is palpable and the presentation is tasteful. Well done - I'm certainly a satisfied observer and will continue to be. Thanks for the consistent fidelity to quality.

Evan Lloyd

Incredible video. This is how history should be taught in school. Well done!

Baker

As always.. amazing video

Taha Addam

Another excellent video! And one I was looking forward to since the epic finale of Napoleon's Egyptian Campaign. Had quite a laugh at some of the quips Napoleon made as well, truly a relatable man!

Francis Morin

I wish people would stop blaming Grouchy for Napoleon's egregious and numerous failings in 1815. Grouchy did very well given the situation he was in, the unclear orders he had, the late pursuit he was ordered to launch and the fact he was physically too far away from Waterloo and had a Prussian army standing between him and the battlefield. He managed to extricate his corps, his wounded and avoid being encircled while starting from behind the victorious allied army and then fought an effective delaying action to allow the remnants of the French army to retreat back to France. #StopBlamingGrouchy Napoleon is the chief culprit of his defeat during that campaign and while he has many extenuating circumstances we can point to, he is nonetheless a far more important culprit than his freshly minted Marshal.

Gage Hardesty

No typo but some encouragement, after seeing this video I will say the music is awe inspiring from the moment you went for the intro to the video was big especially when you brought the dramatic entrance for one of Europe's greatest conquerors of the world for this one coup to like the dramatic music for when uses one to get into power and then another coup from within to get sole power over Europe and also the dramatic lines for the members of the conspiracy favorite one of all is when Lucien tries to convince the Legislation guard to allow Napoleon's troops in as well as him saying "Je jure devant Dieu! Je tuerai mon frère s'il trahit la liberté du Français !" In translation, "I Swear to God! I will kill my brother if he betrays the Freedom of the Frenchman!" Great quote and keep up the great work Epic History!

Cuirassier

Absolutely blown away by this video! The most epic of Epic History's videos! Chills, goosebumps, awe… quite a challenge to describe it! Also, what a fitting date to upload — 220 years to the day Napoleon was proclaimed Emperor (coronation later in December)!

Dan.Gryn

Amazing! Thank you!

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! Narrowly missed out on the typo prize, Ninjahead messaged us about this one a few minutes earlier !

Twinny Hill

Incredible work! The passion and knowledge put into this video.. breath taking! Really well done.

Nikdro

Amazing episode thank you epic history

Carter R

“You’re in deep water now” “It was worse at Arcole” I’m sure Augereau got a good laugh from that 😂

Joe Jameson

Absolutely fantastic episode - this makes me want to see a EPTV series on the early years of the French Revolution even more! :D

Stefano Lissi

Absolutely spectacular job. You really are incredibly consistent with the quality level of your videos, no matter whether they are about military or political events.

Gage Hardesty

You know I just thought of something what if you use the ending music before the showing of Nebula to bring the Ultimate immense stunning music into fruition like you did for your Cape St. Vincent video on Patreon because I bet that'll be epic.

Gage Hardesty

Like for example using the ending music before the showing of Nebula but instead continue that on to the end of your actual video of this series.

Marcus poopsicle

Masterpiece! You guys continue to improve, managing to keep me at the edge of my seat despite knowing the outcome already. Thank you for another great episode!

Flint and Ball

Incredible work team, that was just as enthralling as a battle episode. I did not want it to end.

Noah S

Why does Chuck sound like it would be an American version of Charles?

Gage Hardesty

At 1:27, wasn't Piedmont on the side of France during the second coalition war, because it was shown in the Napoleon's Marshals video.

Gage Hardesty

Found a typo, I think you're mistaking Battle of Zurich as the first Battle of Zurich not the second Battle of Zurich, because the second Battle of Zurich's date is correct but the first date of the Battle is wrong.

Darko

I really like the video. Where did you find this map of Paris and it's surroundings and estates? I was looking for something similar recently, but couldn't find anything this detailed

Walter C

This video was incredible. You guys are so good at storytelling. thank you again for continuing to set the standard. 👏

jk kim

Your video quality is not only exquiste but getting even better awesome

EpicHistoryTV

Hi Darko, here are the links to the two archive Paris maps used in the video: - Composite: Paris Environs Atlas topographique No. 1-16.

Gage Hardesty

Found a typo, from the site I showed to you prior before this video came out I think the Council of Elders are not that name but actually the Council of Ancients, I doubled checked the site that I sent to you directly.

Alexander Ruspandy

Excellent video as always. If you're ever going to do the Hundred Days campaign in future, it maybe a good idea to do Toulouse and Bayonne 1814 campaign as a prelude (and additional epilogue to Peninsular War) and how it affects Wellington's decision making during Hundred Days.

Stuart Carver

Love it. Never doubted you could make a political video so dramatic. Giving out prizes more widely eh, I’ll desist, not that I’ve found any yet anyway. Can I ask about the painting of Napoleon crossing the Alps in the last shot, which version of the painting is it? There’s 5 right all of which have their own fascinating, sometimes globetrotting history, but it makes it hard to know which is which. The original had him draped in gold rather than red but all the others are red? Pretty hard to tell them apart, at least for me.

EpicHistoryTV

Many thanks, Stuart. You're right about the painting - we used the original Jacques-Louis David with the gold cloak, which is now on display at the Château de Malmaison museum (after some globetrotting!).

Hethwill Wargames

Another lavish production ! You fellows are outdoing yourselves in both visual, sound and above all, the essential research ! A lot of myths swirl around about the coup and these 28 minutes surely demystifies a lot of them.

Stuart Carver

I think if you look closely you’ll see that you’ve actually used the 5th version residing at Versailles? The blue scarf under his arm when the original is white, the face is older and has shorter hair, the position of his arm is different and the glove lacks the embroidery of the original. The original cloak is bright gold whereas this is more orange red and the shadows around the horse face is darker.

Panda

Straight HEAT!!!!

James Quaile

Toby can you release the Alexander the Great speech video music please

TankerBricks

I think it's also called the Council of Ancients but also the council of elders, to a degree ofc.

Gage Hardesty

Yeah but the more sounding name is Council of Ancients, Elders is basically the same thing only difference is Ancient is talking about long ago old but Elder means younger old like than Ancient.

Cuirassier

Not sure if it was pointed out already, but at 20:50 the end quotation mark is placed after "instantaneously" instead of "fortune"

Cuirassier

17:39 is also missing a start quotation mark

Melina

Great work! I'm honestly shocked how such high fidelity is always being delivered monthly. I have to wonder, where did you get the images for the 'board' shown at 2:16 with that paper-life effect and the surrounding props? Hell, I can't even figure out how I could even do something like that for a static presentation. Are these images masterfully added together, or is this hand-drawn and painstakingly animated? I also am curious to know what are the background images for when a character is revealed, for example at 8:22. Are these also hand-drawn? Pardon my questions, but everything is just so wonderful! I'm quite inspired, and I would love to get some insight about how EHTV always keeps doing it better and better than the rest.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Melina! The 'Paris office' was created using a variety of images, such as bookcases, globes, candles and tables. For other scenes, we spend a lot of time researching historical imagery from a wide variety of online sources, including museums, universities and online image libraries.

Cuirassier

Sweet! Also spotted at 3:19 im sure there should be a question mark at the end of Napoleon's quote - "Well, what can generals expect from this government of lawyers?" Just spotted this as I’ve been rewatching the video due to its awesomeness!

Bluck

Toby and his team, whatever you are doing just don't stop. This content is ridiculous, i could watch this all day. Seeing from where you started to where you are now, and the humbleness to upload it to youtube, which is completely free, just speechless. Keep up the work boys :D

EpicHistoryTV

I think though technically you're correct, this one is ok as it's a rhetorical question rather than a genuine one, but good spot!

Juan Manuel van der Zee

Absolute masterpiece! Just the intro image of Napoleon coupled with the music sucked me into the video wanting to see more! I am absolutely loving your Napoleon videos lately!

Lord John 🇵🇱💚

Have got to ask all You fellow awesome history lovers. Where can You find wool reproductions from this age? A wool great coat /cloak like Murats would fit nicely into the collection. 💚
